Laboratory: Rules and Regulations

Clothing No short skirts, shorts, hot pants are allowed in the lab No make up, contact lense Proper lab attire includes: Laboratory coat (long-sleeved) Close-toed shoes (no sandals, slippers) Goggle or face shield and N90 mask (when necessary) For other types of PPE, students are advised to refer to the MSDS available in each lab (Item 8.2)

General Rules No unauthorized personnel allowed no salesperson or close relatives or BFFs who are not INBIOSIS registered student or research assistant No food and drinks allowed in the laboratory No playing in the laboratory

General Rules cont d The last person leaving the laboratory everyday is responsible for ensuring that all equipments and switches are turned off or shut down and all door are locked Keep your workspace clean and tidy (5 minutes clean-up routine before and after doing lab work (Good Lab Practice)

General Rules cont d All damages and malfunctions of equipments MUST be reported to the laboratory manager or the laboratory staffs immediately. Please fill up the Aduan Kerosakan Alat form and pass the form to the lab manager or lab staffs Report all injuries to the lab staff or lab manager immediately

General Rules cont d Do not be complacent with chemicals and chemical reactions you won t know when an accident or explosion may occur Refer to the MSDS / CSDS (Material Safety Data Sheet) available in all laboratories before handling any new chemicals that you are unfamiliar with. You may ask the laboratory manager if you cannot find the related MSDS

Labelling All chemicals are required to be labelled properly before storing in the chiller / freezer / chemical storage cabinet Proper and clear label need to contain the following information: Name of chemical Name of researcher Date Chemical name i.e 10% ethanol Made by: Date:

Good Lab Practices 1.Chemicals Keep chemicals stored in the appropriate cabinets or designated storage rooms when not in use (NOT IN FUME HOODS). Only obtain an amount to keep your test or research going, like a one day/week supply. This will free up lab bench space and, if you do have a spill it will minimize the amount of chemical released Put away all reagents, samples, and personal materials. Keep the lids on chemical containers. This sounds obvious but it will effectively reduce the possibility of a spill and reduce any fumes released into your lab and it s the law Label all containers. Make sure there are no unidentified containers; reagents, samples, drying papers with sample, or crucibles/boats with samples. Label all material by chemical name (Not just initials)

GLP cont d 2. Cleaning your lab and workspace Properly dispose of old or unwanted chemicals or any unnecessary items. Damp wipe all benchtops until clean and in particular areas near weighing stations. Place absorbent paper or Benchkote TM near weighing stations or any where necessary. Clean up inside fume hoods Look inside all cabinets for any leftover waste and any storage hazard Dispose broken glass trash and sharps bins into dumpster provided in the lab (blue trash bin) Recycle paper and cardboard properly where necessary (Recycle bin have been allocated at designated areas around the building and in the labs). Unused or spare equipment should ne stored in a designated storage area in the lab

GLP cont d Equipment or furniture should not block walkways, electrical panels, or emergency eyewash or showers How cluttered are your lab benches or hoods? Keep lab benches and hoods uncluttered as much as possible. This may seem impossible when conducting complicated tests or have numerous test samples, but continually remind yourself to keep things organized Keep containers and equipment away from the edges of the benches. Are your reaching over bottles, cultures, etc to get to something? Chances of knocking over things may occur. Keep shelving as orderly as possible. Be realistic about how much equipment and supplies one needs to store long term
