2 5.1 Early thoughts ~ 400 B.C. Greek philosophers Empedocles all matter was composed of four elements earth, air, water, fire Democritus all forms of matter were divided into tiny individual particles atoms Aristotle opposed the theory of Democritus endorsed the Empedocles theory 2

3 5.2 Dalton s s model of the atom Dalton atomic model (1803 ~ 1810) 1. elements are composed of minute, indivisible particles called atoms (atoms are composed of subatomic particles) (atoms, under certain circumstances, can be decomposed) 2. atoms of the same element are alike in masses and sizes (not all the atoms of a specific element have the same mass) 3. atoms of different elements have different masses and sizes 4. compounds are formed by the union of two or more atoms of different elements 5. atoms combine to form compounds in simple numerical ratios 6. atoms of two elements may combine in different ratios to form more than one compound 3
