Clematis viticella Alba Luxurians trailing over wall Pinwheel shaped flowers. White brushed with green. Z4-9 group 3 Photo Brushwood Nursery 28. Flowering vines make striking focal points 29. When using vines as climbers, consider how they accomplish this feat. Three general categories: * Twine * Adhere * Scramble 30. Twiners accomplish this in two ways: Tendrils or Twining Stems. Tendrils skinny, wiry structures that emerge from a stem seeking something they can grab on to and then it curl around 31. Two Types of Tendrils: A. Stem Tendrils wiry appendages shoot out from a stem. Examples Passion Flower and grape vines. Passiflora incarnata x cinnicata Passion Flower x Incense Sun Part Shade Z B. Leaf Tendrils look similar to stem tendrils but are actually modified leaves that emerge from leaf nodes. Example: Morning Glory and Sweet Pea (Lathyrus) 33. Most tendrils are only about 1 long so they need something thin, narrow to wrap around no more than ¼ diameter. Examples: lattice, string, mesh, netting. Cobaea scandens Cup and Saucer Vine Annual Sun tall Fragrant 34. Twining Stems. Examples: Morning Glory, Honeysuckle, Wisteria. Stems twist around whatever they touch. i.e., pole, branch, wire. Lonicera sempervirens Major Wheeler Sun Part Shade 3 8 tall Z 4 8 blooms on old & new wood Twining stems 35. Stems can twine clockwise or counterclockwise depending on the species. Most twiners climb counterclockwise, per Dr. Leonard Perry (UVM). Golden Hops twines clockwise. Humulus lupulus Aureus Sun Part Shade Zones Consider the mature stem mass when selecting a structure especially for behemoth climbers like Wisteria and Trumpet Vine 37. Climbing Vines that Adhere to Structures *Stem roots. Examples - Climbing Hydrangea, Euonymus. *Adhesive pads. Examples - Boston Ivy, Virginia Creeper 38. Scramblers or Ramblers. Long flexible stems that can t climb on their own. Examples Climbing roses, Bougainvillea. Bougainvillea Sun Zones 9 11 Can winter over as a houseplant 39. Bougainvillea 40. A few more thoughts on climbing vines. * Many flowering vines don t start to bloom heavily until the third year or later. 41. When digging in climbing vines, slightly angle the plant in the direction you want the stems to climb 42. When planting climbing vines that adhere next to a building, consider growing them on a trellis that can be
3 removed from the wall to allow access to the building if maintenance is needed (hinges at base, swivel hooks) 43. Climbing Roses. William Baffin climbing rose in the Canadian Explorer series 6 10 Zones 3-8 slightly fragrant 44. Climbing roses introduced by Bill Radler, breeder of Knock Out Roses.
