How do we measure time? second, minute (60 seconds), hour (60 minutes), day (24 hours), week (7 days), fortnight (2 weeks), month (28-31 days), year ( days), decade (10 years), score (20 years), century (100 years), millennium (1000 years) Chronology: the order of events in time Timeline: a tool used to show the chronology (order) of events in time The Story of Father Time and His Punctual Family Once upon a measurement of moments, there lived a man named Father Time. He had a castle in the clouds full of hourglasses, watches, and clocks that kept the world s time. Father Time was very lucky to have a large family that helped him keep track of the world. To keep track of the years, Father Time relied on his two sets of twins. He had a set of twin boys named Before Christ and Before the Common Era or B.C. and B.C.E for short. He also had a set of twin girls named Anno Domini and Common Era or A.D. and C.E. for short. B.C. and B.C.E were very strange boys who liked to do everything backwards. They kept time by counting backwards, so the smaller the number, the more recent the event! Ridiculous! A.D. and C.E. were more organized and decided to keep track of the years counting up from 1. The larger the number, the more recent the event. Look how strange: 2600 B.C. or B.C.E 700 s B.C. or B.C.E A.D. or C.E. 622 A.D. or C.E (First Pyramids) (Illiad written) (Muslim Calendar Begins) (Printing Press) Just like a number line

E. 61 B.C.E. A.D. 5 A.D. 122 *NOTE: The traditional way of writing B.C. and A.D. dates is to put A.D. in front of the date and B.C. after it. For example, Julius Caesar was assassinated in 44 B.C. Joan of Arc was executed in A.D Now the twins grandmother s name was Century, and she was 100 years old. She was a tricky grandma who liked to keep the twins in line! She loved to play math games with the twins. Her favorite game was guess the year/century. To remember what century the twins were in they just had to add 100 to the current year. To remember what years went with the century, they had to subtract 100. For example: You are in year 1647: =1747, so the twins are in the 17 th century is the 17 th century You are in the nineteenth century: =1802, so you are in the 1800 s is the 19 th century Centuries: The 14 th Century would include the years 1301 to would be in the 16th century.

4 Since Grandma loved to play math games with the twins, she taught them how to calculate the number of years that fall between two dates. If both dates are on the same side of the timeline, you subtract the smaller number from the larger number. If the dates are on different sides of the timeline, you add the two numbers together. For example: There are 523 years between A.D and A.D =523 There are 2,467 years between 653 B.C. and A.D =2,467 Determine how many years are between the two dates: 149 B.C. and 35 B.C. 114 years Same side of the timeline = Subtract = 114 A.D and A.D years Same side of the timeline = Subtract = B.C. and A.D ,576 years Different side of the timeline = add =1576 A.D. 511 and 617 B.C. 1,128 years Different side of the timeline = add =1128 Now you should be an expert at keeping track of time!
