Inter-Comparison Studies for Cryospheric Data Goal: Understand the scope of the DAAC s role in inter-comparison studies as they relate to DAAC data holdings For inter-comparison studies focused on algorithms, products, and models: What is the potential role of the NSIDC DAAC in supporting these intercomparisons? What are the potential implications for data holdings at the DAAC? How might these results be provided to users?
ESM-Snow Model Intercomparison Project C. Derksen, G. Krinner, R. Essery, S. Hagemann, A. Hall, H. Rott, A. Slater, M. Sturm Global coupled and offline experiments; reference site simulations
SNOWPEX Satellite Snow Products Intercomparison & Evaluation Excercise An ESA initiative addressing WMO Global Cryosphere Watch and Climate Research carried out under the lead of ENVEO IT in cooperation with FMI, SYKE, EC and CCRS. and associated international contributors US National Ice Center / NOAA/ NESDIS, Cryospheric Processes and RS Laboratory, City University of NY Global Snow Lab, Rutgers University Cryospheric Sciences Laboratory,
What is the potential role of the NSIDC DAAC in supporting these inter-comparisons? Inter-comparisons are often conducted on an unfunded basis but have data management requirements How to handle inter-agency collaboration? (i.e. SnowPEx is ESA funded) Post inter-comparison data archiving needed for distribution to users/follow-on studies Common reference datasets for evaluation are generated (for example SnowPEx and ESM- SnowMIP will use the same reference sites); in the case of snow there is ly no consolidated archive of these datasets

Spatial correlations JFM SWE M= MERRA E= ERAint-land C= Crocus G2= GLDAS2 GS= GlobSnow NS= AMSR-E standard NP= AMSR-E prototype Any implications for DAAC holdings must come from authoritative studies with broad community support What is the response/communication to users if inter-comparison results highlight problematic datasets within DAAC holdings? How are links established to strongly performing datasets that are not held at the DAAC?
How might these results be disseminated to users? Information on product pages Standalone inter-comparison webpage with links to reports/papers Data accession for new datasets generated/consolidated as part of inter-comparison activities Other online outlets in support of inter-comparison studies are available
