1 Great Lakes Regional Collaboration and U.S. GEOSS/IOOS/GLOS Initiative Focus on the Huron to Erie Corridor USEPA Grosse Ile Lab October 17, 2005

2 Great Lakes Interagency Task Force Draft Plan calls for $20B investment to restore ecological balance to the system. Focused on about 40 recommended actions, including: support the U.S. contribution to GEOSS through IOOS/GLOS and IEOS enhance coordination of monitoring activities implement high value SOLEC indicators establish a regional information management infrastructure create a Great Lakes communications workgroup double funding for Great Lakes research

3 Indicators and Information Strategy Team Recommended Near-Term Research Initiate demonstrations of ballast water treatment technologies; Initiate process-based, statistical forecasts of beach closures; Initiate investigations for risk assessments for water intake contamination; Continue development of process-based statistical forecasts of harmful algal blooms; Develop coupled bio-physical models to forecast fish recruitment; Investigate new sediment separation and treatment technologies and beneficial use options; Enhance research on delisting targets for AOCs; Apply mass balance models for each Great Lake to assess progress in meeting toxic reduction goals; Continue research on chemical properties, exposure and long-term effects on human health; and Enhance research on atmospheric sources of toxics and links to fish concentrations and exposures.

4 2004 / 2005 Major Tasks Convene Steering Committee Define User Needs Determine necessary enhancements and costs Draft GLOS Business Plan Initiate Regional Association Initiate regional data management and communication node Initiate data integration prototype
