Salinity Processes in the Upper Ocean Regional Study (SPURS) An upper ocean freshwater field campaign in the salinity maximum region of the Subtropical North AtlanQc planned for March 2012 SpaQally nested structure in both the observaqonal and model approaches: Large scale enqre subtropical regime and its relaqonship to the AMOC Regional scale ~1000 km, represents the salty subtropical convergence regime Small scale ~100 km (comparable to the Aquarius footprint) invesqgates the details of the sub mesoscale physical processes affecqng the surface layer and subducqon of the S max water NASA support of glider array, modeling, data management, planning 3 4 cruises, 30 to 40 days each; possibility of Spanish, Irish and German ships
Con7nuously Opera7ng Caribbean GPS Observa7onal Network (COCONet) Adds 50 GPS staqons around perimeter of the Caribbean basin; installaqon over the next three years NSF Support through EAR Tectonics Program ~$7M/5 years; Small AGS funding contribuqon produce precipitable water vapor (PW) esqmates at 30 minute Qme steps provide conqnuous observaqons of surface temperature and pressure, relaqve humidity, horizontal winds, and precipitaqon
US CLIVAR Hurricane Working Group Chairs: Gabriel Vecchi, GFDL; Suzana Camargo, LDEO; Kevin Walsh, Univ. of Melbourne, Australia To coordinate efforts to produce a set of model experiments designed to improve understanding of the variability of tropical cyclone formaqon in climate models ScienQfic ObjecQves: Improve understanding of interannual variability and trends in tropical cyclone acqvity from the beginning of the 20th century to the present QuanQfy changes in the characterisqcs of tropical cyclones under a warming climate The WG is coordinaqng a set of GCM experiments with a common set of forcings and provide the output for use by the research, predicqon and applicaqons communiqes. NoQng that the work would be useful in interpreqng CMIP5 results, a near term aim is to complete publicaqon(s) for inclusion in the upcoming AR5.
Greenland Ice Sheet/Ocean Interac7ons Working Group Chairs: Fiamma Straneo, WHOI; Olga Sergienko, Princeton Univ.; Patrick Heimback, MIT ObjecQves: Foster and promote interacqon between the diverse oceanographic, glaciological, atmospheric, and climate (modeling and observaqonal) communiqes interested in glacier/ocean interacqons around Greenland Advance understanding of processes and improve their representaqon in climate models The WG is draving paper for submission to EOS or BAMS summarizing the state of knowledge and research on GIS/ocean interacqons, presenqng various disciplinary perspecqves, enumeraqng key science quesqons, and proposing opqons on how the community may proceed. A limited parqcipaqon workshop next Winter/Spring 2012.

Pathway to Process Studies in US CLIVAR Ini7al Science Workshop (not required, but helpful) IdenQfy phenomenological scope Survey past work Enumerate key uncertainqes and quesqons Report to US CLIVAR Process Study and Model Improvement Panel Summarize the above during annual US CLIVAR Summit Submit Science Working Group Prospectus (op7onal) Provide work plan with detailed tasks that are achievable and measurable, milestones, support needs, and anqcipated benefits Annual July invitaqon for new WG prospectus proposals Reviewed by SSC; Funded by US CLIVAR Agencies through USCO If established, coordinate process study planning over two year period Propose field campaign to US agencies Coordinate briefing through US CLIVAR Office
US Working Group Guidelines Aims Expedite planning and/or implementaqon of specific scienqfic acqviqes Foster wider support of, and parqcipaqon in, acqviqes addressing criqcal scienqfic challenges Facilitate joint acqviqes between U.S. CLIVAR and other naqonal and/or internaqonal programs Characteristics Comprised of ~8 12 people (some internaqonal parqcipaqon possible) Carry out acqviqes over a ~2 year lifeqme Produce material for inclusion on CLIVAR web sites, and/or published in journals, newsle0ers, or as CLIVAR reports Publicize and rouqnely report on WG acqviqes to the U.S. CLIVAR Panels Encourage community wide parqcipaqon whenever possible through open workshops, web pages, and lists
Process Study Best Prac7ces (from Cronin et al., 2009) Modelers and observaqonalists should be integrated in the study from the planning stage onward. Integrated and synthesized datasets should be generated from the process study observaqons to provide model comparable data that can be used as benchmarks for assessing and validaqng models. Furthermore, diagnosqcs shown in much cited published figures should be provided in digital format as synthesis products. Broad use of the data should be encouraged through open data policies; centralized access to all components of the experiment; and data archiving in a user friendly format, and with sampling informaqon ( metadata ) that is necessary for understanding the measurement.
