9 History of the Calendar In 738 B.C., the Romans started using a 10-month calendar they borrowed from the Greeks. The original months were Marius Aprilis Maius Junius Quintilis Sextilis September October November December

10 Extra Months Are Added Later, the months Januarius and Februarius were added to account for 60 spare days. In 46 B.C., Julius Caesar changed the (Julian) calendar and gave each of the 12 months 30 or 31 days except Februarius which had 29 days. Every 4 years Februarius gained an extra day. Later he decided to make Januarius the first month, Februarius the second month, and Martius the third month. After Julius was killed, the Romans renamed the month Quintilis (now July) to Julius in his honor. Sextilis was renamed to Augustus (August) to honor Augustus Caesar who moved a day from Februarius to Augustus so he would have the same number of days as Julius. Hence February now has 28 days usually and 29 days every four years.

11 A.M. and P.M. The Romans divided the day into two halves of 12 hours each A.M. and P.M. were Roman abbreviations A.M. stands for ante meridiem (before midday) P.M. stands for post meridiem (after midday)

12 Where s Year Zero? There was no year zero. Year 1 A.D. (Anni Domini in the year of the Lord) marked the birth of Christ and the modern day calendar. Years prior to 1 A.D. are indicated by B.C. (Before Christ). In 530 A.D., a scholarly monk named Dionysius Exiguus trying to pinpoint the birth year of Christ gave us the year numbering system we still use today. Scholars now believe Dionysius miscalculated and that Christ was born somewhere between 7 B.C. and 4 B.C. because Herod the Great was known to have died in 4 B.C.

13 Leap Years A year is days long. Every 4 years we add one day (366 days) to February to account for the extra amount of time. However, there is still excess time left over. In 1582, Pope Gregory XIII (Gregorian Calendar) declared that every 400 years should be a leap year instead of every 100 years to balance out the difference. The years 1700, 1800, and 1900 were not divisible by 400 so they were not leap years.

18 Time Zones The world is divided into 24 time zones of 15 longitudinal degrees each.

19 Greenwich The Prime Meridian, located in Greenwich, England is the starting point for the time zones and is known as Greenwich Mean Time (GMT) or Universal Time. The International Date Line (IDL) is located on the opposite side of the planet from the GMT.
