1 Final Edition: May June 2015 Members of the newspaper staff: Dema N. Natnael M. By: Adrienne Y. We went to this place that had where our state Maryland makes its laws. The place was haunted by this ghost. The ghost was the guy who worked on the dome, and he was admiring his work when he stepped back and fell off the scaffolding. He fell and died, and now he haunts the building. But only the first part is true for sure. Also, they have the body of John Paul Jones preserved. We went on a boat ride and the boat had a snack bar, which was cool. They sold some great food, like Slim Jims, candy, and hot dogs. The boat took us from the harbor on a tour of the water by Annapolis called the Severen River. We went to the Naval Academy and people were flicking pennies at a statue. They color the statue every year. The statue is of a Native American dude. Then the Navy people have to jump every year. They wear their heavy Navy clothes and jump off the jumping board and have to survive in a pool or they don t graduate. Alexa D. Thalia B. Joseph C. Julia C. Adrienne Y. Emily O. 2 FLORIDA-facebook.jpg By: Natnael M., with consultant Matias M. I went to Florida in the summer. It was a long drive, so we stopped at a hotel in Georgia. We stayed there for one day, and then we started driving until we came to our hotel in Florida. The first day we did not go to any places. On the second day we went to Magic Kingdom. The third day we went to Universal Studios. Then on the fourth day we went to SeaWorld. On the fifth day I think it was the Fourth of July. They had a barbeque and a swim party. On the last day we had to leave I was very sad to leave, but we had to. My favorite rides are Space Mountain in Disney World and Harry Potter in Universal Studios. This was one of my favorite vacations that I have gone to; you should go to Florida. Page 2 *New York City (aka The Big Apple) *Boston Quincy Marriot (Nice hotel and has a indoor Pool #OnTopOfTheWorld) *Canada (Sometimes it can be hot reminds me of the time my bottle ex- ploded) *SkyZone (Has a cold temp inside of the building #Frozen) *RiverDale WaterPark (Very fun place but has a Jacuzzi #ForAdultsOnly) *Rhode Island(Usually the temp is Could get cold in the moring but gets hot in the afternoon) *AMC Movie Theratre (Has the Best Movies Ever#LoveThe Movies *Natural History Museum( Very Big and has lots of exhibits #DinoBones) *National History Museum( Has Lots of historical exhibits #StarSpangledBanner) *Kings Dominion (Very fun; has a pool and lots of rollercoasters #wannapuke) By: Alexa D.

3 By: Julia C. Originally the Romans had 10 months that they named. Their names are: Martius (March), Aprilis (April), Maius (May), Junius (June), Quintilis (July), Sextilis (August), September (September), October (October) November (November), December (December). There were probably two unnamed months in the dead of winter when not much happened in farming. The year began with Martius March. Numa Pompilius, the 2 king of Rome circa 700 BC, added the 2 months Januarius January and Februarius February. He also moved the start of the year from Marius to Januarius and changed the number of days in some months to be odd, a lucky number. After Februarius there was sometimes an added month of Intercalaris intercalendar. This is the origin of the leap-year day being in February. In 46 BC, Julius Caesar reformed the Roman calendar (the Julian calendar) changing the number of days in many months and removing Intercalaris. January Janus s month Latin Januarius of Janus Janus is the Roman god of gates and doorways, showed with two faces looking in different directions. His festival month is January. February month of Februa Latin Februarius of Februa Februa is the Roman festival of purification, held on February fifteenth. It is probably of Sabine origin. March Mars month Latin Martius of Mars March was the original beginning of the year, and the time for the beginning of war. Mars is the Roman god of war. He is identified with the Greek god Ares. April Aphrodite s month Greek Aphro, short for Aphrodite. Aphrodite is the Greek goddess of love and beauty. She is identified with the Roman goddess Venus. Continued on page 4 May/June 2015 Page 3

4 May Maia s month Latin Maius of Maia Maia (meaning the great one ) is the Italic goddess of spring, the daughter of Faunus, and wife of Vulcan. June Juno s month Latin Junius of Juno Juno is the principle goddess of the Roman Pantheon. She is the goddess of marriage and the well-being of women. July Julius Caesar s month Latin Julius Julius Julius Caesar rebuilt the Roman calendar (hence the Julian calendar) in 46 BC. In the process, he renamed this month after himself. August Augustus Caesar s month Latin Augustus Augustus Augustus Caesar clarified and completed the calendar reform of Julius Caesar. In the process, he also renamed this month after himself. September the seventh month Latin september mensis seventh month October the eighth month Latin: october mensis eighth month November the ninth month Latin: Novembris mensis ninth month December the tenth month Latin december tenth month Page 4
