2 SPICA/SAFARI (SPace Infrared telescope for Cosmology and Astrophysics) Summary SAFARI (SPICA far-infrared instrument) is an imaging FTS spectrometer being developed in Europe/Canada with contributions by JAXA and NASA Scientific instruments operating over wavelength range of 5-200µm Cooled 3.5m telescope (as apposed to Herschel's warm telescope) Low thermal background, increased collecting area and superior angular resolution can achieve sensitivities an order of magnitude better than Herschel

4 History 50 missions considered for ESA s Cosmic Vision call. 9 missions selected to proceed (6 medium, M-class missions of which SPICA is one and 3 large, L-class missions) Of the 6 M-class missions, 3 (Euclid, PLATO and Solar Orbiter) have been selected for definition phase. SPICA still being considered to join them. SPC will meet in June Of these remaining missions, 2 (or 3) will be selected for flight with an estimated launch date of 2017
