His team won back-to-back titles in 1977 and 1978, and again in 1989 and He also won three consecutive SWAC titles from His other league championships came in 1980, 1982, 1986 and Braddy is the winningest baseball coach in SWAC history. 8 2007 JACKSON STATE TIGERS SEASON PREVIEW THIS IS JACKSON STATE 2007 JACKSON STATE TIGERS OPPONENTS Head coach Tevester Anderson made Jackson State University basketball fans a promise four years ago and he delivered last March. His Tigers won JSU s first Southwestern Athletic Conference championship in seven years last season, as well as making it back to the NCAA Tournament. JSU finished with its first 20-plus win season since the season. As the defending conference tournament champs Anderson and his Tigers have a bull s eye squarely on their backs. And everyone from the SWAC is taking aim at what seems to be a weakened JSU squad. In the Tigers will be without the services of Trey Johnson, the nation s second leading scorer at 27.1 points last season. JSU also lost an outstanding perimeter defender in Julius Young, who averaged 8.7 points. Despite having to find someone to fill the void left by Johnson and Young coach Anderson is optimistic about defending the SWAC title. JSU returns three starters and six lettermen from last season s championship team. We should be competitive this season despite losing super players like Trey Johnson and Julius Young, said Anderson. Last year we had young guys who came on strong at the end of the year. RETURNING PLAYERS Anderson expects Catraiva Givens (5 8, senior), Edwin Jarrow (6 6, senior), Jeremy Caldwell (6 8, junior), Grant Maxey (6 7, sophomore) and Darrion Griffin (6 3, junior) to all play important roles this season. Although Johnson got much of the glory, and deservedly so, Givens, Jarrow, Caldwell, Maxey and Griffin all made significant contributions last season. Givens served as the Tigers floor general last year, dishing out 4.1 assists/game. He also played a presence on defense as he led the team in steals with 57. Lil Trai has matured a lot on and off the court. He has worked hard and he should be a better player for us this season. Givens will be expected to be a shoulder more responsibility for the Tigers. Offensively the will be expected to help carry the scoring load left by Trey Johnson. Over the summer Givens worked as hard on his game as anyone on the team. He should be a much more reliable threat from the perimeter, as well as spreading the ball around more. Defensively he is one of the Tigers best perimeter defenders. He should be a leader in the SWAC in steals. Jarrow only averaged 1.7 points last season, but he did a lot of the dirty work. He grabbed key rebounds, hustled for lose balls and made the occasional big basket. Defensively he was one of the Tigers better defenders last season. He is also expected to provide on-the-court leadership. Caldwell should be JSU s starting post player. Despite suffering from injuries for most of the campaign he finished as JSU s fourth leading scorer (7.0 ppg) and the teams fourth leading rebounder (5.0 rpg). Caldwell will be a real scoring option for Jackson State around the basket area. Maxey emerged as a potential star coming down the stretch last season. He finished as the second leading scorer (8.9 ppg) and the leading rebounder (5.7 rpg). He has good leaping ability and along with Caldwell should be a solid scorer for the Tigers. As a freshman Maxey shot 50 percent from the floor, making 122 of his 244 field goal attempts. Griffin made timely baskets last season and served as a good wing defender. He is one of Jackson State s better perimeter offensive players. Griffin s outside shooting should help open the painted area for JSU s inside game. Despite taking most of his shots from 15 feet and beyond Griffin led the team in field goal percentage, with a 50.9 shooting percentage. Anderson believes that this year s team will be the best shooting team he has had since coming to Jackson State. We have some young guys who can really shoot. Phillip Lockhart (5 11, senior), who played some at the point last year, will probably switch to shooting guard. Garrison Johnson (6 6, sophomore) will also get significant playing time at the forward position. Johnson showed good athleticism and some scoring ability in limited time as a freshman. He shot 42 percent from the field and led the team in free throw shooting percentage (79.2). JSU should also have more depth in the frontcourt. Stanley Turner (6 11, senior) has slimmed down and this should help him avoid the injury bug this season. Last season he played in only 18 games and averaged only 7.1 minutes. This season he should be a reliable back up for Caldwell. Marcus Jones (6 8, junior) should also see key minutes. NEWCOMERS Anderson took to the recruiting trail with specific goals in mind. He set out to find more athletic players. The JSU coaching staff found outstanding talent from both the high school and junior college ranks. Christopher Hyche (6 5, freshman), De Suan Dixon (6 3, freshman), Deshawn Ford (6 7, junior), and Brandon Baker (7 0, freshman) all should make significant contributions this season. Hyche was an outstanding talent at Provine High School (Jackson, MS). He is an explosive leaper and is a decent outside shooter. Dixon was an excellent shooter while at Leland High School (Leland, MS). Ford, another good outside shooter should also be a good defender for Anderson s Tigers. The junior from Columbus State Community College is also expected to be another team leader. Baker a raw talent from Opelika High School (Opelika, AL) will be a project offensively, at the collegiate level, but should be a defensive presence simply because of his height and wing span. SCHEDULE Jackson State s schedule will be just as challenging as last season s schedule. The goal, as always, is to play a tough schedule in preparation for Southwestern Athletic Conference competition. JSU has a tough pre-swac schedule, facing Baylor, BYU, Louisville and California. These non-conference games should prepare the young Tigers in their title defense. JSU will open SWAC play on Jan. 5 against Alabama A&M at the Lee E. Williams Athletics and Assembly Center on the JSU campus. In the final home game of the season Jackson State will face Arkansas-Pine Bluff on March J A C K S O N S T A T E U N I V E R S I T Y M E N S B A S K E T B A L L M E D I A G U I D E

10 2007 JACKSON STATE TIGERS THIS IS JACKSON STATE 2007 JACKSON STATE TIGERS OPPONENTS ERIC STROTHERS - A s S I S T A N T C O A C H Eric Strothers enters his fifteenth season of coaching at his alma mater. Strothers is a former All-SWAC performer. He came back to Jackson State after playing two years of professional basketball overseas. Since that time, he has been a mainstay with the Tigers basketball program. As a coach, Strothers duties include recruiting, scouting, managing the student-athlete academic program, supervising study hall, directing the off-season conditioning program and various administrative duties with the team. His primary coaching responsibilities are with the post players. The Vicksburg, Mississippi native graduated from Vicksburg High School and came to Jackson State as a basketball hopeful. Strothers was an All-County football player in high school, but had less than one year of basketball experience as he saw action in only two games his senior year. He was a walk-on player when then-assistant coach Chris Giles (former Tigers associate head coach) discovered the package of tremendous potential Strothers possessed. By the time Strothers left Jackson State, he was a first-team All-SWAC forward who led Jackson State to a regular season conference title; a SWAC tournament title and a chance to play in the NCAA tournament play-in game against Coastal Carolina. He was voted the team s Most Valuable Player his junior and senior seasons and garnered a SWAC Player-of-the-Week and Black Entertainment Television (BET) Player-of-the-Week honors during his senior campaign. His 17.4 points per game average during his senior year put him in the Jackson State 1,000 point Club as he finished his collegiate career with 1,251 total points. He was drafted in the fourth round by the Sioux Falls franchise of the Continental Basketball Association (CBA) and played in the exhibition season for the South Dakota team before deciding to play overseas.
