AN EXTENSION OF THE LÖWNER HEINZ INEQUALITY MOHAMMAD SAL MOSLEHIAN AND HAMED NAJAFI arxiv: v [ah.fa] 2 Jul 22 Absrac. We exend he celebraed Löwner Heinz inequaliy by showing ha if A, B are Hilber space operaors such ha A > B, hen r A r B r A r A A B > for each < r. As an applicaion we prove ha log A log B log A log A A B. Inroducion Le H,, be a coplex Hilber space and BH denoe he algebra of all bounded linear operaors on H equipped wih he operaor nor. There are hree ypes of ordering on he real space of all self-adjoin operaors as follows. Le A, B BH be self-adjoin. Then A B if Ax, x Bx, x. >. 2 A B if Ax, x > Bx, x holds for all non-zero eleens x H. 3 A > B if A B and A B is inverible. Clearly 3 2 bu he reverse iplicaions are no valid in general. insance, if A is he diagonal operaor, /2, /3, on l 2, hen A bu A. Of course, in he case where H is of finie diension, 2 and 3 are equivalen. A coninuous real valued funcion f defined on an inerval J is called operaor onoone if A B iplies ha fa fb for all self-adjoin operaors A, B wih specra in J. The Löwner Heinz inequaliy says ha, fx = x r < r is operaor onoone on [,. Löwner [] proved he inequaliy for arices. Heinz [8] proved i for posiive operaors acing on a Hilber space of arbirary diension. Based on he C -algebra heory, Pedersen [] gave a shorer proof of he inequaliy. There exis several operaor nor inequaliies each of which is equivalen o he Löwner-Heinz inequaliy, see [7]. One of he is A r B r AB r, called he Cördes inequaliy in he lieraure, in which A and B are posiive operaors and < r. A generalizaion of he Cördes inequaliy for operaor onoone funcions is given in For 2 Maheaics Subjec Classificaion. Priary 47A63; Secondary 47B, 47A3. Key words and phrases. Löwner Heinz inequaliy; posiive operaor; Operaor onoone funcion.
2 M.S. MOSLEHIAN, H. NAJAFI [4]. I is shown in [] ha his nor inequaliy is relaed o he Finsler srucure of he space of posiive inverible eleens. Kwong [9] showed ha if A > B A B, resp., hen A r > B r A r B r, ressp. for < r. Uchiyaa [2] showed ha for every non-consan operaor onoone funcion f on an inerval J, A B iplies fa fb for all self-adjoin operaors A, B wih specra in J. There are several exensions of he Löwner Heinz inequaliy. The Furua inequaliy [6], which saes ha if A B, hen for r, A r/2 A p A r/2 /q A r/2 B p A r/2 /q holds for p and q wih + rq p + r, is known as an exquisie exension of he Löwner Heinz inequaliy; see he survey aricle [5] and references herein. If f is an operaor onoone funcion on,, hen f can be represened as f = f + f where µ is a posiive easure on,. I is known ha in which < r <, and r = sinr A r = sinr where A is posiive and < r < ; see e.g. [3, Chaper V]. dµλ. λ λ + λr dλ,.2 A λ + A λr dλ,.3 In his paper we exend he Löwner Heinz inequaliy by showing ha if A, B BH such ha A > B, hen A r B r A r r A > A B for each < r. As an applicaion we prove ha log A log B log A log A A B 2. The resuls We sar our work wih he following useful lea. Lea 2.. Le A, B BH be inverible posiive operaors such ha A B >. Then B A >. A A. 2.
AN EXTENSION OF THE LÖWNER HEINZ INEQUALITY 3 Proof. Since f = is a decreasing operaor onoone funcion on [, we have B A. On he oher hand A A + A A A + A A A A 2 A A A A A A 2 A A A A 2 A A A. There exiss λ spa such ha A = λ. Since A >, we have A 2 A = ax{λ : λ spa 2 A} = ax{λ 2 λ : λ spa} = λ 2 λ = A A. So B A A +. A A Now we use Lea 2. o prove an analogous bu differen resul o he ain heore of Uchiyaa [2] in an easy fashion as an offshoo of our work. Proposiion 2.2. Le f be a non-consan operaor onoone funcion on an inerval J and A, B be self-adjoin operaors wih specra in J such ha A > B. Then fa > fb. Proof. Wihou loss of generaliy we assue ha J =,. Le A, B BH be self-adjoin operaors wih specra in, and A B is posiive and inverible. So here exiss > such ha A B >. Pu f λ = λ for each λ wih λ <. We shall show ha f λ A f λ B is bounded blow and so inverible. I is clear ha he clai is rue for λ =. If < λ <, hen λb λa = λa B > λ > as well as λb and λa are posiive inverible operaors. Since λ = λ +, λ λ
4 M.S. MOSLEHIAN, H. NAJAFI by Lea 2., we have f λ A f λ B = λ λa λb λ λ λb λ λb = λb λ λb > A siilar arguen shows ha f λ A f λ B λa + λ λa > by 2. for each < λ <. Since f is operaor onoone on,, i can be represened as f = f + f f λ dµλ, where µ is a nonzero posiive easure on,. Since f is nonconsan, f >, [2, Lea 2.3]. Hence fa fb = f = f f A λa B dµλ λb f λ A f λ B dµλ λ dµλ, where λ = λb λ λb if λ <, and λ = λa + λ λa if < λ <. Since µ is a nonzero posiive easure and λ >, we have Therefore fa > fb. fa fb f λ dµλ >. Our ain resul reads as follows. Theore 2.3. Le A, B BH be posiive operaors such ha A B > and < r. Then A r B r A r A r.
AN EXTENSION OF THE LÖWNER HEINZ INEQUALITY 5 Proof. Le < r <. Firs noe ha, A λ + A B λ + B = λ for each λ >. By using.3 we have We need o copue A r B r = sinr sinr I = = λ + B λ + A λ by 2. A + λ A + λ λ A + λ A + λ A λ r λ + A B dλ λ + B λ r A + λ A + λ dλ, λ r λ + A λ + A dλ where < r <. We will need he branch cu for z r = ρ r e irθ, in which z = ρe iθ and θ 2. Consider C z r z + A z + A dz, where he keyhole conour C consiss of a large circle C R of radius R, a sall circle C ɛ of radius ɛ and wo lines jus above and below he branch cus θ = ; see Figure. The conribuion fro C R is OR r 2 2R = OR r = as R. Siilarly he conribuion fro C ɛ is zero as ɛ. The conribuion fro jus above he branch cu and fro jus below he branch cu is I and e 2ri I, respecively, as ɛ and R. Hence, aking he liis as ɛ and R, e 2ri z r I = C z + A z + A dz A = 2ie ri r A r A A by he Cauchy residue heore. So I = sinr A r A r.
6 M.S. MOSLEHIAN, H. NAJAFI Therefore A r B r sinr Figure. Keyhole conour = A r A r. λ r A + λ A + λ dλ Corollary 2.4. Le A, B BH be posiive operaors such ha A B >. Then Proof. Pu f n = n n log A log B log A log A. o log on any copac subse of,. Hence on [,. Then he sequence {f n } uniforly converges log A log B = li n f n A f n B li n A n A n n = log A log A. Corollary 2.5. Le A, B BH such ha A > B. Then ia r B r A r r A A B
AN EXTENSION OF THE LÖWNER HEINZ INEQUALITY 7 for all < r ii log A log B log A log A. A B Proof. I follows fro A > B ha A B A B deduced fro Theore 2.3 and Corollary 2.4. >. Now he asserions are Reark 2.6. The inequaliy in Corollary 2.5 is sharp. Indeed for posiive scalars a, b, if a > b, hen and a r b r = a r log a log b = log a log r a a b a. a b References. E.
