Summer work Name: Summer work BTEC Level 3 Applied Physics We are very much looking forward to meeting you in September, and are sure you will enjoy and succeed in this fascinating subject. This summer work consists of three sections with the tasks being designed to help us find out more about your strengths and assess what you have understood from your GCSE studies. The first section focusses on energy transfers, the first topic of the year. The second section looks at various algebraic problems with the third section a research task. You will need to bring all the completed summer work with you for checking on the induction day on Thursday 8 th September as it will be used in lessons during the first full week of teaching. We estimate that the work should take about 4 hours to complete. Please feel free to contact us using the address below if you need any guidance in completing this work. The Applied Physics team wishes you a lovely summer holiday and, once again, we are looking forward to meeting you in September! Deborah Giveen Course Team Leader of Applied Physics dgiveen@longroad.ac.uk David Jones Course Team Leader of A-Level Physics Section A Energy transfers 1. What is the useful energy transfer in a radio? A. Electrical to sound B. Electrical to light C. Electrical to heat D. Heat to sound 2. What form of energy is stored in a battery? A. Electrical B. Chemical C. Light D. Nuclear
3. An electric lamp is 25% efficient. If it receives 100 J per second of electrical energy, how much of this is transferred as light energy A. 25 J/s B. 75 J/s C. 25 W D. 75 W 4. A teenager climbs to the top of a tree which is 10 m high. His mass is 60 kg. To do this requires 8000 J of energy from food. What is the efficiency at which the food energy is converted to Gravitational Potential Energy? Gravitational Potential energy = mass (kg) x gravitational field strength (N/kg) x height (m) where gravitational field strength is 9.8 N/kg A. 136 % B % C % D % 5. Define the following types of energy. List the source you used. Type of energy Definition Source of information Potential energy Kinetic energy Nuclear energy 6. We have a 100 W light bulb that is only 10% energy efficient. Draw a Sankey diagram, to scale, for this light bulb HINT: Decide what does the electrical energy turn into? Which energy is useful?
7. Heat energy that is transferred can be calculated using the equation: Q = m c ΔT Where Q is the heat energy transferred in joules (J) m is mass in grams (g), c is specific heat capacity in J/g/ C, T is the change of temperature in C What is the change of temperature when 3542 J is transferred into 100 g of water? The specific heat capacity of water is 4.18 J/g/ C? A. 8.5 C B C C C D. 100 C 8. A student wanted to know if there was a relationship between the energy density of liquid alkanes and the length of the carbon chain. They carried out an experiment using the following liquid alkanes. Alkane Formula Number of carbon atoms Energy density/ kj/kg Pentane CH 3 (CH 2 ) 3 CH Hexane CH 3 (CH 2 ) 4 CH Heptane CH 3 (CH 2 ) 5 CH Octane CH 3 (CH 2 ) 6 CH Nonane CH 3 (CH 2 ) 7 CH Decane CH 3 (CH 2 ) 8 CH a) Complete the table above by filling in the number of carbons for each alkane b) Plot a graph of energy density versus number of carbon atoms using the following guidance: Use a piece of graph paper (such as on the next page) Graph has a sensible title Independent variable is on the x-axis Both axes are labelled with variable and units Graph is drawn in pencil Numbers on scale are placed at uniform intervals All data points have been marked correctly Line or curve of best fit is smooth c) Describe any relationship between the number of carbon atoms and energy density.

Section B Using mathematics 1. Which graph below has the equation: y = 2x + 5? A B C D 2. Rearrange the following equations a) Make b the subject of the formula P = 2a + 2b b) Make a the subject of the formula s = a 4 + 8u c) Make t the subject of the formula D = ut + kt 2 d) Make h the subject of the formula d = 3h 2 e) Make g the subject of the formula E = mgh mv2
Section C Research task We would also like you to carry out a short research task in preparation for the first few weeks at Long Road. This is based upon the production of electricity. 1. Choose one of the following types of electricity production: a fossil fuel (coal) solar power (either using solar cells or solar thermal power plant) wind power tidal power nuclear power 2. Research the energy transfers involved in producing electricity in that way. Suggestions of internet sites: Fossil fuels and nuclear power: Renewable energy: EDF website: 3. Produce an A4 poster that clearly shows the different types of energy transfers involved in the production of electricity. Example: For hydroelectricity, the energy transfers would be gravitational potential energy of the water, kinetic energy of the water is used to turn the turbines (kinetic energy transferred to mechanical energy) and then finally electrical energy is produced. 4. You should include a labelled diagram with the energy transfers involved Hint: 5. You should include a list of all your references that you have used including any imaging copied from internet sources. Use Neil s toolbox to write Harvard references: Questions?
