1 1.3 Linear Functions A function of the form f(x) = ax + b, where a and b are constants, is called a linear function. The graph of f(x) = ax + b or y = mx + b, is a line, with slope a (or m), and y intercept b or (0, b). Aug 30 12:02 PM 1

8 The expression rate of change means the same thing as slope. i.e. Rate of change means how the y values are changing with respect to the x values. A line may have positive slope, negative slope, zero slope, or undefined slope. However, a vertical line is not a function. 18 The units for the rate of change are the units of y per unit of x. Note that if the slope is positive, then the rate of change is described as an increase; if the slope is negative, then the rate of change is described as a decrease. Examples: 1) If y = x represents the cost (in dollars) from the production of x hats, then the units of y are dollars and the units of x are hats. Therefore the units for the rate of change are dollars per hat. (Increase or decrease?) 2) (In this case, V takes the place of y and t takes the place of x.) If V = 300,000 10,000t represents the value (in dollars) of a property after t years, then the units of V are dollars and the units of t are years. In this context, the rate of change is also referred to as the marginal cost.
