Up until now, we have learned that there is no real number, x, such that x 2 = -1. However, there is such a number, known as the imaginary unit, i, which satisfies this equation and is defined as. The set of complex numbers is the set of numbers of the form a + bi, where a and b are real numbers. When a = 0, bi is called a pure imaginary number.
