1 Bonabeau model on a ully connected graph K. Malarz,, D. Stauer 2, and K. Ku lakowski, arxiv:physics/05028v [physics.soc-ph] 22 Feb 2005 Faculty o Physics and Applied Computer Science, AGH University o Science and Technology, al. Mickiewicza 30, PL Kraków, Poland 2 Institute o Theoretical Physics, Cologne University, Zülpicher Str. 77, D Köln, Euroland malarz@agh.edu.pl, stauer@thp.uni-koeln.de, kulakowski@novell.tj.agh.edu.pl March 9, 2008 Abstract Numerical simulations are reported on the Bonabeau model on a ully connected graph, where spatial degrees o reedom are absent. The control parameter is the memory actor. The phase transition is observed at the dispersion o the agents power h i. The critical value C shows a hysteretic behavior with respect to the initial distribution o h i. C decreases with the system size; this decrease can be compensated by a greater number o ights between a global reduction o the distribution width o h i. The latter step is equivalent to a partial orgetting. PACS numbers: a, E, Ge Keywords: hierarchies; sociophysics; sociobiology; phase transition; critical point Introduction The game theory is considered to be mathematical ormulation o theory o conlicts []. Since its initialization by von Neumann and Morgenstern in 946 [2], it becomes a powerul branch o knowledge, with numerous links to other areas o science. Oering new insight into old problems, these links allow to widen our perspective to new interdisciplinary applications. Such is the concept o sel-organizing hierarchies in animal societies, introduced by Bonabeau et. al. in 995 [3]. In the Bonabeau model, N agents walk ly on a given area and ight when they met. Initially, the outcome o ights is. However, agents are able to remember or some time their past results and this memory inluences their subsequent ights. Then, there are two competitive mechanisms. First, each ight inluences the agents power: winner is stronger and looser is weaker, what alters the probabilities o winning o their uture ights. Second, the inormation o these alterations is gradually erased. As a consequence, a phase transition can be observed: or a given velocity o orgetting, requent ights produce a hierarchy o permanent winners and permanent loosers. This hierarchy is maintained in time. However, i ights are rare, the hierarchy is being orgotten quicker, than it is reproduced. The requency o ights depends on the number o ighters on a given area. The order parameter is the dispersion o power o the agents, or the dispersion o probabilities o winning/loosing o pairs o agents. The phase transition was termed in [4] as the one between hierarchical and egalitarian society. Besides
2 its sociological associations, the Bonabeau model oers nontrivial dynamics o a speciic, time-dependent spontaneous symmetry breaking, which in our opinion deserves attention rom a theoretical point o view. Unortunately, numerical experiments described in Re. [4] have shown that the order and even the appearance o the phase transition depends on a direct way o orgetting, i.e. the time dependence o the agents power, and on the presence o mean-ield-like coupling which is absent in Re. [3]. A reasonable strategy o resolving this puzzle seems to separate it to elements as simple as possible, and to observe their properties. Here we propose a ormulation where the spatial coordinates o agents are absent. Instead, the agents are placed at nodes o a ully connected graph, i.e. each agent can meet every other agent. Scale ree networks were mentioned in [5]. In next section the applied procedure is described in detail. Numerical results are reported and concluded in two subsequent sections. 2 The model Two ighters i and j are selected ly rom a population o N agents. The probability that i-th agent wins over j-th is P(i, j, t) = + exp{(t)[h j (t) h i (t)]} where h i is the power o i-th agent at time t and () 2 (t) = h 2 i (t) h i(t) 2, (2) where is the average over N agents. As an output o the ight, the power h i o the winner increases by ε and the one o the looser decreases by ε. Every N steps (i.e. ights), the powers h i o all agents are multiplied by the actor ( ), where (0, ). This is the step o orgetting. As oten as orgetting procedure takes place the current value o dispersion is evaluated which is then ixed during next N ights. The number o such updates o is N iter. Then, the total number o ights during one simulation is N N iter. 3 Results The parameters o the calculations are: the system size N, the number o ights N between the subsequent updates o, the number o steps N iter and the change ε o the power h i. The initial distribution o h i appears also to be relevant. This is set either (h i [ N/2, N/2]), or homogeneous, i.e. h i = iε or all i, or delta-like, i.e. h i = 0 or all i. We keep ε = 0.0. The output o the simulation is the critical value o, i.e. C, where changes abruptly. We can speak about hierarchical (large ) or egalitarian (small ) society. As a rule, or small we get hierarchy, and or large equality. It appears that C depends on the ratio between N and N. Keeping N constant and increasing N, we make orgetting more and more relevant, because each agent ights less between subsequent orgettings. Then, the critical value C decreases with N, as shown in Fig. (a). We can compensate this variation, changing N and N simultaneously as to keep C constant. Two series o this 2
3 procedure are shown in Figs. (b) and (c), or C = 0.3 and C = 0.5. In Fig. 2, we show two respective curves o N against N. We note that the obtained values o are stable vs time, because the distribution o the agent s power h i stabilize ater some transient time. Examples o this dynamics are shown in Fig. 3 or various values o the parameters. According to what was said above, the system size o the critical value o orgetting parameter C (N) decreases to zero or large N. The character o this variation is shown in Fig. 4. It is likely that there is a power-like behavior, i.e. C N α, with α Thus we cannot exlcude α = asymptotically. For small systems, the inal value o does not depend on the initial distribution o h i. However, above N = 75 the inal distribution o h i shows some hysteretic behavior, i.e. does depend on initial values o h i. In Fig. 5 we show the curves () obtained or, homogeneous or delta-like initial values o h i. The curves, identical or N < 75, split abruptly or larger systems. On the contrary, we checked that the hysteretic eect is not observed in the approach in Re. [4], at least near the critical point reported there. 4 Discussion In their seminal paper [3], the authors put several examples and suggestions on societies, which could sel-organize into the hierarchical state. There, reerence are given on animal societies, like bees, wasps, ants, chickens, cows and ponies. A question arises how important are spatial degrees o reedom in these societies. This is a central task or our considerations, because the territorial aspect o the problem o hierarchy is disregarded here, while it was included in earlier work. It seems that in small groups o some animals, the dierence in hierarchy is not to be here or there but rather to do this or that. This is particularly true in societies o some primates, as Pan troglodytes, Homo sapiens or Gorilla gorilla [6, 7, 8]. The Bonabeau model, once released, lives with its own lie as it provides nontrivial questions on its mathematical properties. However, its core is the sociological application: description o a group o agents, possibly human, which concentrate on their hierarchy. How important is this hierarchy or them, depends on their experience and social environment. Except army and some universities, we are interested in ormation o a society rather egalitarian than hierarchical, and tasks o educational organizations ollowing this attitude are well known [9]. In the Bonabeau model, these eorts get a well-deined purpose: to be on the right side o the transition. Acknowledgments. The numerical calculations were carried out in ACK CYFRONET AGH.
