1 A unified approach o a priori esimaes for supersoluions of BSDEs in general filraions Bruno Bouchard Dylan Possamaï Xiaolu Tan Chao Zhou arxiv:57.643v [mah.pr 3 Jul 5 March 8, 8 Absrac We provide a unified approach o a priori esimaes for supersoluions of BSDEs in general filraions, which may no be quasi lef-coninuous. As an example of applicaion, we prove ha refleced BSDEs are well-posed in a general framework. Key words: Backward SDE, supersoluion, Doob-Meyer decomposiion, refleced backward SDE. MSC Classificaion ): 6H99 Inroducion Supersoluions of backward sochasic differenial equaions BSDEs from now on) were inroduced by El Karoui e al. in heir seminal paper [7, in order o sudy superhedging sraegies in mahemaical finance. In he simple conex of a filered probabiliy space Ω,F,F := F ) T,P) where F is he augmened) naural filraion of a d-dimensional Brownian moion W, a supersoluion of a BSDE wih erminal condiion ξ and generaor g consiss is a riple of F-adaped processes Y,Z,K), living in appropriae spaces, wih K predicable non-decreasing, such ha Y = ξ g s Y s,z s )ds Z s dw s + dk s, [,T, P a.s..) These objecs appeared laer o be a he very hear of he sudy of refleced BSDEs, as inroduced in El Karoui e al. [8, and more generally of BSDEs saisfying some consrain, see Cvianić, Karazas and Soner [4 for consrains on he Z-componen and Peng e al. [7,,, 3, 4 for general resricions. More recenly, supersoluions of BSDEs have proved o provide he semimaringale decomposiion of he so-called second order BSDEs, inroduced by Soner, Touzi and Zhang [6 and generalized by Possamaï, Tan and Zhou [5, and of he weak BSDEs sudied by Bouchard, Élie and Réveillac in [. 2 When he generaor g is equal o, he process Y defined above is nohing else bu a supermaringale, and.) is simply is Doob-Meyer decomposiion. This was generalized by Peng [ using he noion of non-linear supermaingales, see also [, 9 and he references herein. As seen hrough he above examples, supersoluions of BSDEs appear quie frequenly in he lieraure, as naural semimaringale decomposiions for various sochasic processes, and are ofen used o sudy heir fine properies. Having a hand a priori esimaes on he momens and on he sabiliy of supersoluions is crucial in hese conexs. Unforunaely, in almos all he previously cied works, wih he excepion of [5, such esimaes have been wrien in, roughly speaking, he conex of a Brownian filraion. This is raher limiing from he poin of view of boh he heory and he applicaions, and i has creaed a endency in he recen lieraure o reproduce very similar proofs every ime ha he conex was generalized. In his paper, we propose a general approach which allows one o consider a quie sufficienly general seing. In paricular, we do no assume ha he underlying filraion is generaed by a Brownian moion. In his case, one needs o inroduce anoher componen in he definiion of a supersoluion of a BSDE, namely a maringale M ha is orhogonal o W: Y = ξ g s Y s,z s )ds Z s dw s dm s + dk s, [,T, P a.s..) When K, such objecs were firs inroduced by El Karoui and Huang [6, and sudied more recenly by Kruse and Popier [3 o handle more general filraions, in he conex of L p -soluions, as in he seminal papers [7, 3. Supersoluions in general filraions play a crucial role for he class of refleced BSDEs sudied by Klimsiak [, which is, as far as we know, he mos general reference o dae. However, all [6, [, [3 sill impose ha he filraion is quasi lef-coninuous, a propery which, for insance, is no saisfied for he second order BSDEs sudied in [5. To undersand he simplificaions induced by he quasi lef-coninuiy assumpion, le us give a brief skech of he sraegy of proof usually used o obain esimaes, say in L for simpliciy: i) Apply Iô s formula o e α Y o obain e α Y +α = e αt ξ e αs Y s ds+ e αs Z s ds+ e αs Y s g s Y s,z s )ds e αs d[m s e αs Y s Z s dw s e αs Y s dm s + e αs Y s dk s. ii) Take expecaions on boh sides, use classical inequaliies namely Young and Burkholder-Davis- Gundy) and some coninuiy assumpions on g usually Lipschiz coninuiy) o conrol L -ype norms of Y,Z,M) by he norm of K imes a small consan, when α > is large enough. iii) Use he definiion of a supersoluion o conrol he norm of K by he norms of Y,Z,M), and conclude. Wha is acually hidden in his reasoning is ha, because of he quasi lef-coninuiy assumpion, he maringale M canno jump a predicable imes, and hus he bracke [M, K is idenically equal o. This is no longer rue for general filraions, in which case we have o deal wih he erm [M,K. I urns ou o be difficul o conrol, which makes his radiional approach no amenable o filraions ha are no quasi lef-coninuous. Noice ha in [, when he generaor does no depend on Z, here is no need for he quasi lef-coninuiy assumpion. Bu he general case requires i.
3 The main aim of our paper is o give a general proof of a priori esimaes and sabiliy for supersoluions of BSDEs in a possibly non-quasi-lef-coninuous filraion. The proof relies on he following propery: "I is sufficien o conrol he norm of Y o conrol he norm of Y,Z,M,K)." This is he philosophy of he esimaes of Meyer [9, Theorem ha apply o general supermaringales see also he generalizaion in [6, Thm 3.). In Secion, we show how i can be generalized o he non-linear conex of BSDEs. Namely, Theorem. below provides he exension of [9, Theorem o a supersoluion, while Theorem. is a version ha applies o he difference of wo supersoluions. Boh are valid for supersoluions ha are only làdlàg. In Secion 3, we use hese resuls o provide a well-posedness resul for refleced BSDEs wih a càdlàg obsacle. When here is no quasi lef-coninuiy assumpion on he filraion, his resul is no available in he exising lieraure. Noaions. For any l N\{}, we denoe he usual inner produc of wo vecors x,y) R l R l by x y. The Euclidean norm on R l is denoed by, and simplified o when l =. Le T > be fixed and le Ω,F,P) be a complee probabiliy space, equipped wih a filraion F = F ) T saisfying he usual condiions, and carrying a sandard d-dimensional F Brownian moion W. Imporanly, we do no assume ha he filraion is quasi lef-coninuous. Given p > and α >, we inroduce he classical spaces: L p is he space of R-valued and F T -measurable random variables ξ such ha ξ p L p := E[ ξ p < +. S p resp. S p r) denoes he space of R-valued, F-adaped processes Y, wih P-a.s. làdlàg resp. càdlàg) pahs, such ha [ Y p S p := E sup Y p < +. s T M p,α is he space of R-valued, F-adaped maringales M, wih P-a.s. càdlàg pahs, such ha M is orhogonal o W and [ ) p M p M := E e αs d[m p,α s < +. H p,α resp. H p,α ) is he space of Rd -valued resp. R-valued) and F-predicable processes Z such ha [ ) p Z p H := E e αs Z p,α s ds < +. I p,α resp. I p,α +, Ip,α r, I p,α +,r ) denoes he space of R-valued, F-predicable processes wih bounded variaions K, wih P-a.s. làdlàg resp. non-decreasing làdlàg, càdlàg, non-decreasing càdlàg) pahs, such ha [ ) p K p I := E e α p,α s dtvk) s < + and K =. In he above TVK) denoes he oal variaion of K. 3
4 We also define S p loc as he collecion of processes Y such ha, for an increasing sequence of sopping imes τ n ) n saisfying Plim n τ n = ) =, he localized process Y τn belongs o S p for each n. The spaces M p,α loc, Hp,α loc, Hp,α,loc, Ip,α loc, and Ip,α +,loc are defined similarly. Finally, for α =, we simplify he noaion M p := M p,, H p := H p,, H p := Ip, +, Ip r := I p, r and I p +,r := Ip, +,r. I p + := Hp,, Ip := I p,, Noe ha he above spaces do no depend on he precise value of α as we work on he compac ime inerval [, T, wo values of α acually provide equivalen norms. Sill, we keep he parameer α which, as usual, will be very helpful for many of our argumens. Given a làdlàg opional process X, such ha is righ-limi process X + is a semimaringale, and a locally bounded predicable process φ, we define he sochasic inegral as in [5: φ X) := φ s dx s := φ s dx + s φ X + X ),. Moreover, we define φ s dx s := φ sdx s φ sdx s. A priori esimaes Le us consider a BSDE wih erminal condiion ξ and generaor g : [,T Ω R R d R. For ease of noaions, we denoe g,ω) := g,ω,,). Alhough, we will have o differeniae beween possible values of p >, his parameer is fixed from now on. The following sanding assumpion is assumed hroughou his secion. Assumpion.. i) ξ L p, g H p and he process,ω) g ω,y,z) is F-progressively measurable for all y,z) R R d. ii) There are wo consans L y,l z ) R + such ha g ω,y,z) g ω,y,z ) Ly y y +L z z z,.) for all,ω,y,z,y,z ) [,T Ω R R d ). We recall here he definiion of a supersoluion. Definiion.. We say ha Y,Z,M,K) is a soluion resp. local soluion) of Y = ξ g s Y s,z s )ds Z s dw s dm s +K T K,.) if he above holds for any [,T, P a.s., and Y,Z,M,K) S p H p M p I p resp. Y,Z,M,K) S p loc Hp loc Mp loc Ip loc ). If moreover K Ip + resp. Ip +,loc ), we say ha Y,Z,M) is a supersoluion resp. a local supersoluion) of.).. Esimaes for he soluion Our main resul says ha i is enough, in order o conrol he S p -norm of Y of a soluion Y,Z,M,K), o conrol he norms of he oher erms Z,M,K). We emphasize ha he general seing we consider here creaes addiional difficulies ha have no been ackled so far in he lieraure, and which mainly 4
5 sems from he fac ha i is possible for he processes K and M o jump a he same ime, when he filraion is no quasi lef-coninuous. Therefore, he radiional approach which consiss in applying Iô s formula o Y p o derive he desired esimaes fails, as his makes he cross-variaion beween M and K appear, a erm ha has no paricular sign and canno be conrolled easily. Our message here is ha, in order o obain such esimaes in a general seing, one should rely on a deeper resul from he general heory of processes, namely he esimaes obained in Meyer [9 for general supermaringales, a version of which we recall in he Appendix below, see Lemma A.. 14 Theorem 3.. Le Assumpion. hold rue. Then, here is a unique soluion Y,Z,M,K) o he refleced BSDE 3.). Proof. The uniqueness is an immediae consequence of Proposiion 3.3, recall ha he Doob-Meyer decomposiion of he supermaringale M K is unique. We herefore concenrae on he problem of exisence.. Firs, le us consider he case p = and prove he exisence in 3 seps. i) We assume firs ha he funcion g does no depend on y,z), ha is, g,ω,y,z) = g,ω). Exisence of a soluion is guaraneed by [, Theorem.. Then, he fac ha Z,M,K) lies in he good space follows by Theorem.. ii) We now consider he general case. Given α >, le us consider he space S of processes Y, Z, L) such ha Y,Z) S r H,α, L is a càdlàg supermaringale such ha L =: M K where M is orhogonal o W, Y,Z,K,L) saisfies and Y S, [,T and Y S )dk =, P a.s., 3.3) Y,Z,L),α := e α Y S + Z H,α + L S <. We will show in Sep 3 below ha S,,α ) is a Banach space. Then, exisence can be proved by using he classical fixed poin argumen. Le us define Ȳ, Z, L ) :=,,) and Ȳ n, Z n, L n ) n by Ȳ n+ = ξ g s Ȳ s n, Z s n )ds Z n+ s dw s d L n+ s. 3.4) Using he esimaes of Proposiion 3.3, i follows ha, for α > large enough, Ȳ n, Z n ) n is a Cauchy sequence in H,α H,α, and hence a Cauchy sequence in S r H,α by he esimaes in Par ii) of Proposiion 3.. 15 I follows ha Ȳ n, Z n, L n ) n is a Cauchy sequence in S,,α ), from which exisence follows. iii) S is clearly a subspace of a Banach space. I is herefore enough o show ha i is closed, in order o prove ha S is a Banach space. The only non rivial poin o check is ha he Skorokhod condiion in 3.3) passes o he limi. Le Y n,z n,l n ) n be a sequence in S ha converges o Y,Z,L) for he norm,α defined above. Clearly, L is sill a càdlàg supermaringale in S, by dominaed convergence. Since Y n Y S + L n L S, i follows ha [ τm [ τm [ τm E Y S )dk = E Y S )dl = lim E Y n n S )dl n =. Since K is non-decreasing and Y S on [,T, we hus obain τm Y S )dk =, P a.s. In his case, we can define for n ξ n := n) ξ n, S n := n) S n, and g n ) := n) g ) n, so ha ξ n,s n,g n,,)) n L S r H,α, for any α. Moreover, by a similar equaliy as in 3.5), i follows ha L n := M n K n ) n is also a Cauchy sequence in S p r. Using he same argumens as in iii) of Sep, i is easy o check ha is limi is a soluion o 3.). 4 Side remark Noe ha he exisence and uniqueness of a soluion Y,Z,M) S p r H p M p o he BSDE Y = ξ g s Y s,z s )ds Z s dw s dm s 4.) follows from he same argumens as he one used in Secion 3 whenever ξ L p and g H p.
