Scatteing poblem of scala wave in womhole geomety Sng-Won Kim Depatment of Science Edcation, Ewha Women s Univesity, Seol -75, Koea Jne 5, 7 In this pape, we stdy the scatteing poblem of the scala wave in the tavesable Loentzian womhole geomety. The potentials and Schödinge-like eqations ae fond in cases of the static nchaged and the chaged womholes. The diffeential scatteing coss sections ae detemined by the phase shift of the asymptotic wave fnction in low feqency limit. It is also fond that the coss section fo chaged womhole is smalle than that fo nchaged case by the edction of the thoat size de to the chage effect. axiv:g-qc/78v 7 Feb..Jb, 3.5.Pm, 3.65.Nk I. INTRODUCTION The womhole has the stcte which is given by two asymptotically flat egions and a bidge connecting two egions []. Fo the Loentzian womhole to be tavesable, it eqies exotic matte which violates the known enegy conditions. To find the easonable models, thee had been stdying on the genealized models of the womhole with othe mattes and/o in vaios geometies. Among the models, the matte o wave in the womhole geomety and its effect sch as adiation ae vey inteesting to s. The scala field cold be consideed in the womhole geomety as the pimay and axiliay effects []. Recently the soltion fo the electically chaged case was also fond [3]. Scala wave soltions in the womhole geomety [,5] was in special womhole model only the tansmission and eflection coefficients wee fond. The electomagnetic wave in womhole geomety is ecently discssed [6] along the method of scala field case. These wave eqations in womhole geomety daws attention to the eseach on adiation and wave. Also thee was a sggestion that the womhole wold be one of the candidates of the gamma ay bsts [7]. Fo the gavitational adiation in any foms, the scatteing poblem to calclate the coss section in moe genealized models of womhole shold be consideed. Ths the stdy of scala, electomagnetic, gavitational waves in womhole geomety is necessay to the eseach on the gavitational adiation. In this pape, we stdy the scala wave in static nchaged and chaged womhole and find the diffeential scatteing coss sections. We also compae the eslts each othe in both cases to see the chage effect on scatteing poblem. Hee we adopt the geometical nit, i.e., G = c = h =. addess: sngwon@mm.ewha.ac.k II. STATIC UNCHARGED WORMHOLE The spacetime metic fo static nchaged womhole is given as ds = e Λ dt + d b/ + dθ +sin θdφ,. whee Λ is the lapse fnction and b is the womhole shape fnction. They ae assmed to be dependent on only fo static case. The wave eqation of the minimally copled massless scala field is given by Φ = g µ gg µν ν Φ =.. In spheically symmetic space-time, the scala field can be sepaated by vaiables, Φ lm = Y lm θ,φ l,t,.3 whee Y lm θ,φ is the spheical hamonics and l is the qantm angla momentm. If l = and the scala field Φ depends on only, the wave eqation simply becomes the following elation [8]: e Λ b Φ = A = const.. In this elation, the back eaction of the scala wave on the womhole geomety is neglected. Ths the static scala wave withot popagation is easily fond as the integal fom of Φ = A e Λ b / d..5
The scala wave soltion was aleady given to s fo the special case of womhole in Ref. [3,8]. Moe geneally, if the scalafield Φ depends on and t, the wave eqation afte the sepaation of vaiables θ, φ becomes 8 V l=3 l= l= ü l + l whee the potential is V l = L eλ + eλ b = e Λ ll+ b b 3 = V l l,.6 e Λ b + b Λ.7 and the pope distance has the following elation to : = e Λ b..8 Hee, L = ll+ is the sqae of the angla momentm. The popeties of the potential ae detemined by the shape of it, if only the explicit foms of Λ and b ae given. If the time dependence of the wave is hamonic as l,t = û l,ωe iωt, the eqation becomes d +ω V l û l,ω =..9 d It is jst the Schödinge eqation with enegy ω and potential V l. When e Λ is finite, V l appoaches zeo as, which means that the soltion has the fom of the plane wave û l e ±iω asymptotically. The eslt shows that if a scala wave passes thogh the womhole the soltion is changed fom e ±iω into e ±iω, which means that the potential affects the wave and expeience the scatteing. As bnea thoat, the potential has the finite vale of V l e Λb ll++/ b. As the simplest example fo this poblem, we conside the special case Λ =,b = b / as sal, the potential shold be in tems of o as V l = ll+ + b o = ll+ +b + b +b., whee the pope distance is given by = b / d = b.. This is the hypebolic elation between and which is plotted in Fig.. The potentials ae depicted in Fig.. The potential has the maximm vale as V l max = V l max = V l b = ll++ b FIG.. Plot of the potentials of the specified womhole b = b / fo l =,,3. Hee we set b =. Now we can see the chaacteistics of the potential Eq.. in the specified limits. When l =, the potential and its asymptotic vale ae V l = b +b b *..3 When l, the potential and its asymptotic vale ae l V l +b l.. As b independently of the vale of l, the potential has the asymptotic vale as V l ll+ [ll+ ]b..5 Fom the potential Eq.., the tansmission coefficient can be calclated by WKB appoximation as a+ ll+ T lω = exp a +b + b +b ω / d.6 whee the ppe and lowe integation limits a + and a ae a ± = ± b + ll+ / l l+ ω + +b ω ω..7 The tansmission coefficient means the pobability that the scala wave can pass thogh the thoat of the womhole, eventhogh it doesnot haveenoghenegytoovecome the potential. A few tansmission coefficients ae depicted in Fig.. Fo lage l, it becomes l T l +ω b l l +ω b +l..8,
.8.6. T l= 5 l= l=5 Ths the eqation Eq..3 becomes as d d + ω ll+ e Λ + b/ d d d d = w 5 FIG.. The ω-dependency of T lω fo the specified womhole b = b / fo l = 5,,5. Hee we set b =. When l =, it is exactly given as whee T = e Aω,.9 Aω = b π ω ω b / π3 F [{,, 3 },{, 5 };b ω ] b Γ Γ5 + ω b 3/ b π3 F [{, 3, 5 },{3, 7 };b ω ] Γ Γ7.. Hee p F q {a,,a p },{b,,b q };z is the genealized hypegeometic fnction. Fo moe deep ndestanding on scatteing poblem, we shold find the diffeential coss section. Since we discss the low feqency case simila to the black hole case [9], we appoach the poblem with the diffeent definition of Φ by sing R,t instead of l,t/ nlike Eq..3 as Φ = R,tYθ,φ.. The eqation, in tems of R, becomes e Λ Λ R+e b e Λ b R = ll+r.. The eqation can be ewitten as d d dr d + ω ll+ e Λ b/ R =,.3 whee = e Λ b. If we set R = /, the fist tem of the eqation Eq..3 shold be { d d dr d = d / d + d d d } d.. Fo example, Λ =, b = b / like the potential poblem, then shold be = b..6 The eqation Eq..5 is expanded in powe of as d d + ω + ω b ll+ +b ω b + ll+ +O 6..7 As neglecting the tems O, the eqation becomes d d + ω + ω b ll+..8 When the feqency is enogh low fo being as ω b < ll +, the scatteing is elastic and the soltion to the eqation is lω = j λ ω..9 Hee λλ + = ll + ω b o λ = + l+ ω b and j λ is the spheical Bessel fnction. The tning point is ll+ TP = ω b..3 When ω b ll+, thee is a total absoption and no tning point. Since the soltion Eq..9 asymptotically becomes lω ω sinω π λ,.3 the phase shift of the wave fnction by the potential is δ l = l+ π ω b l+..3 Thephase shift δ l isobvioslypositive, which meansthat the potential is attactive. The scatteing amplitde in patial wave expansion is fθ = ω l+p l cosθe iδ l sinδ l..33 l= If ω b and δ l ae vey small, the scatteing amplitde is given by 3
The elation fθ ω l+p l cosθδ l l= πωb = πωb P l cosθ l= sin θ..3 δ l πω b l+.35 is sed fo the second line. The eqation.35 is deived fom Eq..3 by sing the fact that ω b o. Theefoe, the diffeential coss section is dω = fθ = π ω b 6sin θ..36 l In the case of vey low feqency, b neglecting ω b ω tem, the eqation Eq..8 becomes d d + ω ll+,.37 which means no scatteing, since any tem is not appeaed except enegy ω and centifgal tem. Howeve, it is Colomb scatteing fo black hole, since thee is the tem [9]. The soltion to the eqation fo black hole is = j l ω..38 If we emain the tem with low feqency appoximation in Eq..7, then d d + ω ll+ +b / ll+.39 The eqation can be solved as the poblem with an potential. In this case, the coss section is given in most text books on qantm mechanics []. In WKB appoximation, the wave fnction has the asymptotic fom of l Dsin ω U l+/ d+ π,. whee U = b [ll+ /].. The phase shift in this wave fnction shold be R δ l = lim ω U l+/ R a d R ω l+/ d l/ω a U ω l / = b ωπ,. l whee U is assmed to be vey small in asymptotic egion compaing to the two tems in the sqae oot, even thogh l is defined as the lage vale. Hee, the phase shift is negative and it is natal by the eplsive potential Eq... With this phase shift, the diffeential coss section shold be dω b π 6sin θ..3 This is estictedly calclated in the limit of lage angla momentm and small U. As we see, it is independent of ω and the θ-dependence is the same as that of the potential case, Eq..36. III. CHARGED WORMHOLE The electically chaged womhole is given by [3] ds = + Q dt + b + Q d + dθ +sin θdφ. 3. When Q =, this becomes the Mois-Thone type womhole spacetime [] and when b =, this becomes the Reissne-Nodstöm black hole with zeo mass. If we eplace b Q by b eff as b b eff = b Q, 3. it self-consistently satisfies the field eqations fo the β β+ womhole withot Q. When b = b β+, the adis which limits the ange of the womhole becomes = Q β+ β β+ b β Fo the special case of β = o b = b /, Q < b is the condition that is eqied fo maintaining the womhole nde the addition of the chage. The metic fo the chaged case with scala field is also given by [3] ds = dt + b + α d + dθ +sin θdφ. 3.
The sbstittion b b eff = b α does not change the eqation like the electically chaged case and α < b is also the condition fo being safe nde the addition of scala chage. To see the scala wave in the chaged womhole, we fist analyze the popeties of the potential. In this case, only the following sbstittions will be enogh fo the stdy: e Λ = + Q and b b eff = b Q 3.5 Fo the special case of b = b, the pope length will be vey complicated fom as = = e Λ b eff / = Q b E sin b Q b d +Q +Q b b b Q whee Eα β is the Elliptic integal of the second kind defined by α Eα β = βsin θdθ. 3.7 With the sbstittion Eq. 3.5, the potential will be V l = + Q ll+ + + Q b Q Q >. 3.8 If we examine the pope length and potential V l fo the limit of infinite distance and nea the thoat of the womhole b Q, we can fige ot the ogh fom of the potential. Since The potential fom is compaed with the case of Q =, so that V max Q = ll+ Q b b + Q b + Q b Q > ll+ b + b = V max Q =. 3.3 As we see in Eq. 3.3, the chage effect contact the thoatsizeofwomholeanditcasesthemaximmofthe potential to be inceased. Since the tem in the backet of the following eqation is positive fo l in geneal, the potentials of both cases ae given as V Q = ll+ + b + Q ll+ + b Q > V Q =. 3., 3.6 With these eslts, the potentials ae plotted in Fig. 3 so that the potential fo Q is above the potential fo Q =. Fo the elation between and, 8 6 V Q > Q = * FIG. 3. Potentials fo chaged Q and nchaged Q = womholes. Hee we set b =, Q =.5, and l =. lim = ± and lim =, 3.9 b Q the pope length has the simila fom to the nchaged case. At the asymptotic egion, the potential appoach Since dv d = dv d lim V,V =. 3. d d = dv d + Q b + Q 3. and dv d = when dv d =, the potential at the thoat has a finite common maximm vale as * * = Q > Q = 3 FIG.. The elation between and fo chagedq and nchagedq = womholes. Hee we set b = and Q =.5. lim V,V = V max,v max. 3. b Q 5
d d Q = + Q < b b / + Q / = d d Q = 3.5 is plotted in Fig.. It is based on the elations of and, i.e., Eqs.. and 3.6 fo chaged and nchaged womhole. At asymptotic egion, lim = ± in both cases. Since V Q > V Q = in the fom of the potentials, the tansmission coefficient is T Q < T Q =, which seems that the scala wave can tansmit hade in chaged womhole than netal nchaged womhole. As neglecting the tems O, the eqation becomes as d d + ω + ω b 3Q ll Since the b tem is simply eplaced by b 3Q, the scatteing coss section shold be [] M. S. Mois and K. S. Thone, Am. J. Phys. 56, [] S.-W. Kim, Gavitation & Cosmology, 6,. [3] S.-W. Kim and H. Lee, to be pblished in Phys. Rev. D.. [] S. Ka, D. Sahdev, and B. Bhawal, Phy. Rev. D 9, [5] S. Ka, S. N. Minwalla, D. Magyai, Poblems in Qantm Mechanics Pegamon Pess, Oxfod, 976. dω = fθ = π ω b 3Q 6sin θ < dω Q =. 3.7 In case of womhole with scala field, becase only Λ = is consideed as we see in Eq. 3., the tem b 3Q fo electically chaged case is jst b α fo scala field case, so that the coss section shold be dω = π ω b α 6sin θ < dω α=. 3.8 Of cose, the inteaction of the wave with the scala field is neglected hee. In both cases, coss sections ae edced by the chage effect. IV. DISCUSSION Hee we stdied the scatteing poblem fo the scala wave in static nchaged and chaged womholes. The inteactions of the scala wave with the chage ae neglected. If we conside them, the effect wold make sense. The scatteing coss sections ae fond and the chage effects ae examined in this scatteing poblem. As fthe eseach, we will ty othe waves fo vaios womholes, sch as the otating womhole and cosmological model with womhole. ACKNOWLEDGMENTS This wok was sppoted by Koea Reseach Fondation GantKRF---D8. 6
