GLOBAL UNIQUE SOLVABILITY OF INHOMOGENEOUS NAVIER-STOKES EQUATIONS WITH BOUNDED DENSITY MARIUS PAICU, PING ZHANG, AND ZHIFEI ZHANG arxiv:131.16v1 [math.ap] Jan 13 Abstract. In this paper, we prove the global existence an uniqueness of solution to -imensional for =,3) incompressible inhomogeneous Navier-Stokes equations with initial ensity being boune from above an below by some positive constants, an with initial velocity u H s R ) for s > in -D, or u H 1 R 3 ) satisfying u L u L being sufficiently small in 3-D. This in particular improves the most recent well-poseness result in [1], which requires the initial velocity u H R ) for the local well-poseness result, an a smallness conition on the fluctuation of the initial ensity for the global well-poseness result. Keywors: Inhomogeneous Navier-Stokes equations, well-poseness, Lagrangian coorinates. AMS Subject Classification ): 35Q3, 76D5 1. Introuction In this paper, we consier the global existence an uniqueness of the solution to the following -imensional for =, 3) incompressible inhomogeneous Navier-Stokes equations with initial ensity in R ) an having a positive lower boun: 1.1) t ρ+u ρ =, t,x) R + R, ρ t u+u u) u+ p =, ivu =, ρ,u) t= = ρ,u ), where ρ,u stan for the ensity an velocity of the flui respectively, p is a scalar pressure function, an the viscosity coefficient is suppose to be 1. Such a system escribes a flui which is obtaine by mixing two miscible fluis that are incompressible an that have ifferent ensities. It may also escribe a flui containing a melte substance. One may check [17] for the etaile erivation of this system. Given ρ R ), an u satisfying ivu =, ρ u L R ), Lions [17] see also [5, 19] an the references therein for an overview of results on weak solutions of 1.1)) prove that 1.1) has a global weak solution so that 1 ρt)ut) L + Moreover, for any α an β, the Lebesgue measure uτ) L τ 1 ρ u L. µ { x R ; α ρt,x) β } is inepenent of t. In imension two an uner the aitional assumption that ρ is boune below by a positive constant an u L R ), smoother weak solutions may be built. Their existence stems from a quasi-conservation law involving the norm of u,t);l R )) an of t u, p an u L,T);L R )) for any T <. For both types of weak solutions however, the problem of uniqueness has not been solve. Date: Dec., 1. 1
M. PAICU, P. ZHANG, AND Z. ZHANG Layženskaja an Solonnikov [16] first aresse the question of unique solvability of 1.1). More precisely, they consiere the system 1.1) in a boune omain Ω with homogeneous Dirichlet bounary conition for u. Uner the assumption that u W p,p Ω) p > ) is ivergence free an vanishes on Ω an that ρ C 1 Ω) is boune away from zero, then they [16] prove Global well-poseness in imension = ; Local well-poseness in imension = 3. If in aition u is small in W p,p Ω), then global well-poseness hols true. More recently, Danchin [8] establishe the well-poseness of the system 1.1) in the whole space R for small perturbations of some constant ensity. Abii, Gui an Zhang [3] investigate the large time ecay an global stability to any global smooth solutions of 1.1). Another important feature of 1.1) is the scaling invariant property: if ρ, u) is a solution of 1.1) associate to the initial ata ρ,u ), then ρλ t,λx),λuλ t,λx)) is also a solution of 1.1) associate to the initial ata ρ λx),λu λx)). A functional space for the ata ρ,u ) or for the solution ρ,u) is sai to be at the scaling of the equation if its norm is invariant uner the above transformation. In this framework, it has been state in [1, 7] that for the initial ata ρ,u ) satisfying ρ 1) Ḃ p p,1 R ), u Ḃ an that for a small enough constant c we have for any p [1,) p 1 ρ + u p 1 Ḃ p,1 Ḃ p,1 R ) with ivu = p 1 p,1 c, p existence of global solution ρ,u, p) with ρ 1 C b [, ); Ḃ p Ḃ 1 p 1 p,1 R )), an t u, u, p L 1 R + ;Ḃ p,1 R )); uniqueness in the above space if in aition p. p,1 R )), u C b [, ); These results have been somewhat extene in [] so that u belongs to a larger Besov space. Paicu an Zhang [18] further extene the well-poseness result in [] so that even if one component of the initial velocity is large, 1.1) still has a unique global solution. The smallness assumption for the initial ensity in [1, 7] has also been remove in [4], an the restriction of p [1,] for uniqueness result in [1, 7] has been remove recently in [9]. A byprouct in [4] implies the global existence of solutions to 1.1) in 3-D with initial ensity in R 3 ) an having a positive lower boun, an initial velocity being sufficiently small in H R 3 ). The authors [9] prove the global wellposeness of 1.1) provie that ρ 1 MḂ p 1 p,1 ) + u Ḃ p forsomesufficientlysmallconstantc, wheremḃ 1 p,1 R p ))enotesthemultiplierspaceofḃ 1 p,1 R ). This space in particular inclues initial ensities having small jumps across a C 1 interface. Again in the scaling invariant framework, the authors [13] prove the global existence of weak solutions to 1.1) provie that the initial ata satisfy the nonlinear smallness conition: ρ u h ) Ḃ 1+ p exp Cr u ) r c µ p,r Ḃ 1+ p p,r for some positive constants c,c r an 1 < p <, 1 < r <, where u h = u1 ) an u = u h,u ). With a little bit more regularity assumption on the initial velocity, they [13] also prove the uniqueness of such solutions. p 1 p,1 c,,,u 1
GLOBAL UNIQUE SOLVABILITY OF INHOMOGENEOUS NS EQUATIONS 3 In general when ρ R ) with a positive lower boun an u H R ), Danchin an Mucha [1] prove that the system 1.1) has a unique local solution. Furthermore, with the initial ensity fluctuation being sufficiently small, for any initial velocity u B 1 4, R ) L R ) in two space imensions, an u B q q,p R ) with 1 < p <, < q < an p 1 q, they also prove the global well-poseness of 1.1). On the other han, Hoff [14, 15] prove the global existence of small energy solutions to the isentropic compressible Navier-Stokes system. The main iea in [14, 15] is that with appropriate time weight see Remark 1. for etails), one can close the energy estimate for space erivatives of the velocity fiel even if the initial velocity only belongs to L R ). Motivate by [14, 15], we shall investigate the global well-poseness of 1.1) with less regular initial velocity than that in [1] an without the small fluctuation assumption on the initial ensity. We emphasize that the Lagrangian iea introuce in [9, 1] will also be essential for the proof of the uniqueness result here. Our main results in this paper can be liste as follows. Theorem 1.1. Let s >. Given the initial ata ρ,u ) satisfying 1.) < c ρ x) C < +, u H s R ), the system 1.1) has a unique global solution ρ,u) such that 1.3) c ρt,x) C for t,x) [,+ ) R, A t) C u L, A 1 t) C u H s exp{ C u 4 L }, A t) C 1+ u 8 L ) u H s + u 4 H s)exp{ C u 4 L }, for any t [,+ ). We shoul point out that we o not nee the lower boun assumption for the initial ensity in the existence part of Theorem 1.. Inee, the constant C in 1.6) is inepenent of c in 1.4). We can also prove the local existence an uniqueness solution to the system 1.1) even if the initial velocity oes not satisfy the smallness conition 1.5). One may check Remark.1 for etails. Remark 1.. The powers to the weight σt) in the energy functionals, A i t),b i t) for i = 1,, are motivate by the following observation: let s be a negative real number an p,r) [1, ], a constant C exists such that 1.7) C 1 f Ḃs t e s t f p,r L p L r R + ; t t ) C f Ḃ, p,r s see Theorem.34 of [6] for instance). In particular, if u H s R ) for s,1), u H s 1 R ) B, s 1 R ) an u B, s R ). Then accoring to 1.7), t 1 s e t u L C u H s an t s e t u L C u H s. This in some sense explains the weights in 1.3). Similarly, we can explain the weights in 1.6). Remark 1.3. We shoul point out that we can not irectly apply Theorem 1 of [1] concerning the uniqueness of solutions to 1.1) to conclue the uniqueness part of Theorem 1.1 an Theorem 1.. Yet the Lagrangian iea in [9, 1] can be successfully applie to prove the uniqueness part of both Theorems 1.1 an 1.. An the uniqueness result of Germain [11] can not be applie here either. The uniqueness result of [11] requires the ensity function satisfying ρ [,T];L R )), but here our ensity function only belongs to [,T] R ). Moreover, the velocity fiel in Theorems 1.1 an 1. oes not satisfy the time growth conition in [11], especially in Theorem Global solutions to 1.1) with large boune ensity The purpose of this section is to present the proof to the existence part of both Theorem 1.1 an Theorem Existence of the solution in -D. Proof to the existence part of Theorem 1.1. Let j ǫ be the stanar Frierich s mollifier. We efine An we choose ǫ so small that ρ ǫ = j ǫ ρ, u ǫ = j ǫ u. c ρǫ x) C, x R. With the initial ata ρ ǫ,uǫ ), the system 1.1) in -D has a unique global smooth solution ρǫ,u ǫ ). In what follows, we shall only present uniform energy estimates 1.3) for the approximate solutions ρ ǫ,u ǫ ). Then the existence part of Theorem 1.1 essentially follows from 1.3) for ρ ǫ,u ǫ ) an a stanar compactness argument. The uniqueness part of Theorem 1.1 will be prove in Section 3.
GLOBAL UNIQUE SOLVABILITY OF INHOMOGENEOUS NS EQUATIONS 5 To simplify the notations, we will omit the superscript ǫ in what follows. First of all, applying the basic L energy estimate to 1.1) gives.1) A t) = 1 ρ1 u L C u L for t R +. While it follows from the transport equation of 1.1) an 1.) that.) c ρt,x) C for t,x) R + R. To erive the estimate for A 1 t), we get, by taking the L inner prouct of the momentum equation of 1.1) with u t, that ρ u t x+ 1 u x = ρu u) u t x, R t R R from which, we infer à 1 t) ef = στ)ρ u t xτ + 1 R σt) ut,x) x R.3) t στ)ρu u) u t xτ + u xτ. R R In this subsection, we shall frequently use the following version of Gagliaro-Nirenberg inequality:.4) a L p R ) C a p By virtue of.) an.4), we obtain.5) C C R στ)ρu u) u t xτ L R ) a 1 p L R ) στ) uτ) L 4 uτ) L 4 ρ 1 ut τ) L τ for p <. στ) uτ) 1 L uτ) L uτ) 1 L ρ 1 ut τ) L τ C δ στ) uτ) L uτ) L uτ) L τ +δ C δ A t) στ) uτ) 4 L τ +δ στ) ρ 1 ut τ) L τ στ) uτ) L τ +δã1t), for any δ >, where C δ is a positive constant so that C δ as δ. Whereas thanks to 1.1), we write.6) u+ p = ρu t +u u), which along with the classical estimate on the Stokes system ensures that u L + p L ) ρu t L + ρu u L so that ρu t L + u 1 L u L u 1 L ),.7) u L + p L C ρ 1 u t L + u L u L ). Substituting.7) into.5) gives rise to.8) στ)ρu u) u t xτ Cδ A t) R στ) uτ) 4 L τ +CδÃ1t).
6 M. PAICU, P. ZHANG, AND Z. ZHANG Summing up.1),.3) an.7)-.8) an taking δ sufficiently small, we obtain à 1 t)+ στ) u xτ C u R L uτ) L Ã1τ)τ + u L ). Applying Gronwall s inequality gives.9) à 1 t)+ στ) u xτ C u R L exp { C u 4 } L. To obtain the estimate of A 1 t), we nee to use an interpolation argument. For this, we consier the linear momentum equation ρ t v +u v) v + p =, v,x) = v x). Then it follows from the same line to the proof of.9) an.7) that ρ v t + v + p )xτ + vt,x) x C v R R H exp { C u 1 4 } L, στ)ρ v t + v + p )xτ +σt) vt,x) x C v R R L exp { C u 4 } L. We efine the linear operator Tv = v. The above inequalities tell us that Tv L Cexp { C u 4 L } v H 1, Tv L Cσt) 1 exp { C u 4 L } v L, from which an Riesz-Thorin interpolation theorem [1], we infer v L = Tv L Cσt) 1+s exp { C u 4 L } v H s. Further, we efine a family of operators T z v = σt) z ρ 1 t vt,x) for Rez [,1]. Then we have T iy v L,t;L ) Cexp { C u 4 L } v H 1, T 1+iy v L,t;L ) Cexp { C u 4 L } v L, for any y R. Apply Stein interpolation theorem [1] to get στ) 1 s ρv 1 t L L,t) = T 1 sv L,t;L ) Cexp { C u 4 } L v H s. The other terms can be treate in a similar way. Therefore we have.1) A 1 t) C u H s exp{ C u 4 L }. Finally, we manipulate the H energy estimate for u. We first get, by taking the time erivative to the momentum equation of 1.1), that ρu tt +u u t ) u t + p t = ρ t u t +u u) ρu t u. Taking the L inner prouct of the above equation with u t, an then using integration by parts, we write 1 ρ u t x+ u t x t R R = ρ t u t x ρ t u u) u t x ρu t u) u t x, R R R

Fortunately, the iea use to prove Theorem 1 of [1] can be successfully applie here. Let ρ,u,p) be the solution of 1.1) obtaine in Theorem 1.1 an Theorem 1..
