1 arxiv: v1 [math.ap] 17 Feb 2011 Existence of Weak Solutions for the Incompressible Euler Equations Emil Wieemann Abstract Using a recent result of C. De Lellis an L. Székelyhii Jr. ( [2]) we show that, in the case of perioic bounary conitions an for arbitrary imension 2, there exist infinitely many global weak solutions to the incompressible Euler equations with initial ata v 0, where v 0 may be any solenoial L 2 -vectorfiel. In aition, the energy of these solutions is boune in time. 1 Introuction Let =[0,2π], 2, an L 2 per () be the space of -perioic functions in L 2 loc (R ;R ), i.e. u(x+2πl)=u(x) for a.e. x R an every l Z. Then, as usual when ealing with perioic bounary conitions for flui equations (cf. for instance [1]), we efine the space Hper m ()={v L2 per () k 2m v(k) 2 <, v(k) k=0 for every k Z, k Z an v(0)=0}, (1) where v Z C enotes the Fourier transform of v. We shall write H() instea of Hper() 0 an H w () for the space H() equippe with the weak L 2 topology. Recall the incompressible Euler equations t v+iv(v v)+ p=0 ivv=0, (2) where v v is the matrix with entries v i v j an the ivergence is taken row-wise. A vectorfiel v L ((0, );H()) is calle a weak solution of these equations with -perioic bounary conitions an initial ata v 0 H() if (v t φ+v v φ)xt+ v 0 (x)φ(x,0)x=0 (3) 0 for every -perioic ivergence-free φ C c (R [0, );R ). 1
2 Unlike in the case of Navier-Stokes equations, for which the existence of globalweaksolutionshasbeenknownsincethework[3]ofj.leray,theexistence problem for weak solutions of Euler has remaine open so far. In this paper we show that the existence of weak solutions is a consequence of C. De Lellis an L. Székelyhii s work [2]. More precisely, we have Theorem 1. Let v 0 H(). Then there exists a weak solution v C([0, );H w ()) (in fact, infinitely many) of the Euler equations with v(0)=v 0. Moreover, the kinetic energy E(t) = 1 v(x,t) 2 x (4) 2 is boune an satisfies E(t) 0 as t. Note that the conition v(0)=0 in the efinition of H(), i.e. vx=0, is no actual constraint ue to Galilean invariance of the Euler equations. Ourproofofthis theoremis verysimple: Owingto [2], it sufficesto construct a suitable so-calle subsolution with the esire initial ata; we obtain such a subsolution by solving the Cauchy problem for the fractional heat equation t v+( ) 1/2 v=0 v(,0)=v 0, (5) which is not ifficult since, owing to perioicity, we can work in Fourier space. Although our solutions have boune energy, they o not satisfy any form of the energy inequality. Inee, they exhibit an increase in energy at least at time t=0, an this increase will be iscontinuous (this follows from e(v 0,u 0 )> 1 2 v 0 2 in the proof below). If one requires, in contrast, that the energy be boune at all times by the initial energy, then existence of such weak solutions is not known for arbitrary initial ata (but only for an L 2 -ense subset of initial ata, see [4]). In fact, it is impossible to euce from Theorem 2 below such an existence theorem, since for smooth initial ata the existence of infinitely many weak solutions woul contraict well-known local existence results an weakstrong uniqueness, see Subsection 2.3 of [2]. 2 Preliminaries Before we prove the result of this paper, we recall some notions from [2]. LetS0 enote the space of symmetric trace-free -matrices. Then the generalise energy e R S0 R is efine by e(v,u)= n 2 λ max(v v u), (6) where λ max enotes the largest eigenvalue. e is known to be non-negative an convex, an 1 2 v 2 e(v,u) for all v an u with equality if an only if u= v v v 2 I (I being the unit matrix). The following is shown in [2]: 2
3 Theorem 2. Let ē C(R (0, )) C([0, );L 1 loc (R )) be -perioic in the space variable an( v,ū, q) be a smooth, -perioic (in space) solution of t v+ivū+ q=0 iv v=0 (7) in R (0, ) such that v C([0, );H w ()), (8) for every(x,t) (0, ), an ū(x,t) S 0 (9) e( v(x,t),ū(x,t))<ē(x,t) (10) for every(x,t) (0, ). Then there exist infinitely many weak solutions v C([0, );H w ()) of the Euler equations with v(x,0)= v(x,0) for a.e. x an for every t (0, ) an a.e. x. 3 Proof of Theorem v(x,t) 2 =ē(x,t) (11) By Theorem 2, it suffices to fin suitable( v,ū, q) an ē. Let us efine v an ū by their Fourier transforms as follows: v(k,t)=e k tv 0 (k), (12) ū ij (k,t)= i( k j k v i (k,t)+ k i k v j (k,t)) (13) for every k 0, an ū(0,t)=0. Note that ū ij thus efine equals R j v i R i v j, whererenotes the Riesz transform. Clearly, for t>0, v an ū are smooth. Moreover, ū is symmetric an trace-free. Inee, the latter can be seen by observing i=1 ( k i k v i (k,t)+ k i k v i (k,t))= 2 k e k t k v 0 (k)=0 (14) for all k 0 (for k=0 this is obvious). Next, we can write equations (7) in Fourier space as t v i +i k jū ij +ik i q=0 j=1 k v=0 (15) 3
4 for k Z, i=1,...,. It is easy to check that( v,ū,0) as efine by (12) an (13) solves (15) an hence( v,ū,0) satisfies (7). Concerning the energy, we have the pointwise estimate e( v,ū) C( v 2 + ū ), an because of v 2 x= v 2 = e k t v 0 2 v 0 2 L 2 () (16) k Z k Z an, similarly, u x C u 2 x C v 0 2 L 2 (), (17) we conclue that sup t>0 e( v(x,t),ū(x,t)) L 1 () <. Moreover, from the same calculation an the ominate convergence theorem we euce e( v(x,t),ū(x,t)) L 1 () 0 (18) as t as well as strongly in L 2 () an v(t) v 0 (19) ū(t) u 0 = (R j (v 0 ) i +R i (v 0 ) j ) ij (20) strongly in L 1 (). We claim that then e( v,ū) C([0, );L 1 ()). (21) The only issue is continuity at t=0. First, one can easily check that the map (v,u) e v,u v (22) is Lipschitz continuous with Lipschitz constant, say, L; thus, using the inequality a a b b ( a + b ) a b, we have e( v,ū) e(v 0,u 0 ) L ( v v v 0 v 0 + ū u 0 )x (23) 2Lsup v(t) L 2 v(t) v 0 L 2+L ū u 0 L 1 0 t 0 as t 0. This proves the claim. Therefore, ē efine by ē(x,t) =e( v(x,t),ū(x,t))+min{t, 1 t } (24) satisfies the requirements of Theorem 2 an, in aition, ēx 0 as t. Theorem 2 then yiels the esire weak solutions of Euler. 4
