NEW INDEX TRANSFORMS OF THE LEBEDEV- SKALSKAYA TYPE S. YAKUBOVICH arxiv:59.764v math.ca] Sep 5 ABSTRACT. New index transforms, involving the real part of the modified Bessel function of the first kind as the kernel are considered. Mapping properties such as the boundedness and invertibility are investigated for these operators in the Lebesgue spaces. Inversion theorems are proved. As an interesting application, a solution of the initial value problem for the second order partial differential equation, involving the Laplacian, is obtained. It is noted, that the corresponding operators with the imaginary part of the modified Bessel function of the first kind lead to the familiar Kontorovich- Lebedev transform and its inverse.. INTRODUCTION AND PRELIMINARY RESULTS Let fx, gτ, x R +, τ Rbe complex -valued functions. The main goal of this paper is to investigate mapping properties of the following index transforms of the Lebedev-Skalskaya type ], involving the modified Bessel function of the first kind in the kernel, namely, F fτ= π coshπτ Ggx= π e x/ e x/ Re I iτ x ] fxdx, τ R,. x ] gτdτ Re I iτ coshπτ, x R +,. where i is the imaginary unit and Re denotes the real part of a complex -valued function. 4 4 S. Yakubovich Corollary. Let x >, τ R. The kernel. of the Lebedev-Skalskaya type transform. has the integral representation Ψ τ x= x cosτycoshy/ F ; 3 π ; xcosh y dy,.9 where the integral converges absolutely. Proof. The proof is immediate from the inversion formula for the Fourier cosine transform and asymptotic behavior of the Kummer function at infinity cf. ], Vol. I F a; b; z=oz a, z +, which guarantees the absolute convergence of the integral.9 because the integrand is continuously differentiable as a function of y R +. Employing the Mellin-Barnes representation. of the kernel Ψ τ x, we will derive an ordinary differential equation whose particular solution is Ψ τ x. Precisely, it is given by Lemma 3. The kernel Ψ τ x is a fundamental solution of the following second order differential equation with variable coefficients x d Ψ τ dx + x+xdψ τ dx + x + τ Ψ τ =.. Proof. Recalling the Stirling asymptotic formula for the gamma-function, we see that for each τ R the integrand in. behaves as s=γ+ it Γs+iτΓs iτγ/ s ΓsΓ s = e π t / t γ, t.. This circumstance allows to differentiate repeatedly with respect to x under the integral sign in.. Hence with the reduction formula for the gamma-function, a simple change of variables and the Cauchy residue theorem, we obtain the chain of equalities x d dx x d dx Ψ τ = πi γ+i s Γs+iτΓs iτγ/ s x s ds ΓsΓ s = τ Ψ τ x+ γ+i πi = τ Ψ τ x+ πi +γ+i = τ Ψ τ x πi 3x = τ Ψ τ x πi +γ+i + + γ+i Γ+s+iτΓ+s iτγ/ s x s ds ΓsΓ s Γs+iτΓs iτγ3/ s x s ds Γs Γ s Γs+iτΓs iτγ/ s/ s x s ds ΓsΓ s 3x = τ Γs+iτΓs iτγ/ s s x s ds ΓsΓ s Ψ τ x d x Ψ τ x. dx Hence after fulfilling the differentiation we arrive at., completing the proof of Lemma 3.
Lebedev- Skalskaya Type Transforms 5. BOUNDEDNESS AND INVERSION PROPERTIES OF THE INDEX TRANSFORM. In order to investigate the mapping properties of the index transform. we will use the Mellin transform technique developed in 3]. Precisely, the Mellin transform is defined, for instance, in L ν,p R +, < p see details in 5] by the integral f s= fxx s dx,. being convergent in mean with respect to the norm in L q ν i,ν + i, q = p/p. Moreover, the Parseval equality holds for f L ν,p R +, g L ν,q R + fxgxdx= πi The inverse Mellin transform is given accordingly fx= πi f sg sds.. f sx s ds,.3 where the integral converges in mean with respect to the norm in L ν,p R + /p f ν,p = fx p x dx ν p..4 In particular, letting ν = /p we get the usual space L R +. Further, denoting by CR + the space of bounded continuous functions, we have Theorem. The index transform. is well-defined as a bounded operator F : L R + CR and the following norm inequality takes place Moreover, if the Mellin transform. of f satisfies the condition F f CR sup F fτ π f..5 τ R f s Γ s L p ν i, ν+ i, <ν <, < p,.6 Then F fτ= π Re ] I iτ x Kiτ xϕxdx,.7 coshπτ where ϕx= ν+i f s πi Γ s x s ds,.8 integral.8 converges with respect to the norm in L ν,q R +, q = p/p and the index transform.7 is the Lebedev transform with the modified Bessel functions as the kernel 6]. Proof. The proof of the norm inequality.5 is straightforward from. and inequality.. The continuity of F fτ follows from the absolute and uniform convergence of the corresponding integral. In fact, we derive π F fτ e x/ x Iiτ fx dx π coshπτ coshπτ tanhπτ πτ fx dx π f.
6 S. Yakubovich Hence we arrive at.5. Further, the asymptotic formulae for the modified Bessel function of the first kind.4,.5 and the Macdonald function.8 ], Vol. II yield that for each fixed τ > the kernel in.7 has the behavior Re ] I iτ x Kiτ x=ologx, x, Re I iτ x ] Kiτ x=o x, x. Hence this kernel belongs to the space L ν,p R +, < ν <, < p. Now by condition.6 and Theorem 86 in 5] we have see.8 ϕ L ν,q R +, q= p/p. In the meantime, recalling.4,.5, we find e x/ Re I iτ x ] = O, x, x ] e x/ Re I iτ = O, x. x Hence the kernel of. belongs to L ν,p R + and f s L p,ν+i via condition.6. Indeed, we have ν+i f s p ds = Γ s f s p ds Γ s p Γν] p ν+i f s p ds Γ s p <. This means, that f L ν,q R + and integral. converges absolutely. Moreover, Theorem 87 in 5], the Parseval identity., integral representation. and relation in 4], Vol. III lead to the equalities F fτ= Γs+iτΓs iτγ/ s f sx s ds πi ΓsΓ s = π Re ] I iτ x Kiτ xϕxdx, coshπτ where ϕ is defined by.8 and both integrals converge absolutely. This gives.7 and completes the proof of Theorem. The inversion formula for the transform. is established by Theorem. Under conditions of Theorem let also the Mellin transform f s be analytic in the strip /<Re s<3/ and f s Γ s L p ν i, ν+ i L ν i, ν+ i, ν <..9 Then, assuming that the index transform. satisfies the integrability conditionf fτ L R + ;τe πτ dτ, it has the following inversion formula for all x> x fx= π coshπτ F, π ; +iτ; iτ; x πτ ex/ x ] I ] sinhπτ Re iτ F fτdτ,. where the corresponding integral converges absolutely.
Lebedev- Skalskaya Type Transforms 7 Proof. The additional condition.9 and analyticity of f s in the strip Re s= ν /,3/ imply via the Cauchy theorem that integral.8 does not change when we shift the contour within the strip. Meanwhile, the Lebedev expansion theorem 6] for the index transform.7 says that if ϕ L 3/4,, L 5/4,,, then for all x> the following inversion formula holds x ϕydy= π π τ sinhπτk iτ xf fτdτ.. However, since ϕx L ν,q R +, we let /4<ν < / and use the Hölder inequality to get the estimate /p ϕx x /4 dx ϕ ν,q x dx ν /4p ϕ ν,q = <, ν /4p] /p which guarantees the assumption ϕ L 3/4,,. On the other hand, letting /<ν < /4, we find /p ϕx x /4 dx ϕ ν,q x dx ν+/4p ϕ ν,q = ν+ /4p] /p < and we have ϕ L 5/4,,. Therefore, substituting the value of ϕ by the integral.8 in the left-hand side of., we change the order of integration, appealing to Fubini s theorem. Hence, calculating the elementary inner integral, using the reduction formula for the gamma-function and elementary substitutions, we deduce x ϕydy= ν+i πi Therefore, combining with., we arrive at the equality πi f s Γ s x s ds= f s πi Γ+s xs ds, < ν <. f s Γ+s xs ds= π π τ sinhπτk iτ xf fτdτ.. The integral in the right-hand side of. converges absolutely due to the imposed condition F fτ L R + ;τe πτ dτ and the Lebedev inequality for the Macdonald function cf. 3], p. 99 K iτ x x /4 sinhπτ, x,τ >..3 Indeed, we have for all x > τ sinhπτkiτ x F fτ dτ x /4 τe πτ F fτ dτ <..4 Hence, returning to., we apply to the both sides of this equality the Laplace transform with respect to x 5]. Changing the order of integration in the left-hand side of the obtained equality by the Fubini theorem and calculating the inner integral, it gives the result πi e xy f s Γ+s ys dsdy= xπi f sx s ds=x f, x> x by virtue of.3 and the condition f s L ν i, ν+ i, which follows immediately from.9. Therefore, for all x> we derive the formula x f = x π e xy τ sinhπτk π iτ yf fτdτdy = π π τ sinhπτkx, τf fτdτ,.5
8 S. Yakubovich where Kx,τ= e xy Kiτ y dy, x,τ >.6 and the interchange of the order of integration is allowed by Fubini s theorem and the estimate.4. Our final goal is to calculate the integral.6, which is absent in 4], Vol. II. To do this we appeal again to the Parseval equality. and relation in 4], Vol. III and the Slater residue theorem 4], Vol. III. Hence we deduce<γ < e xy Kiτ y dy= γ+i 4xi Γs+iτΓs iτ ΓsΓ s π Γ/+s xs ds = π x sinhπτ i 4x iτ Γ iτ F + iτ; +iτ; x i 4xiτ Γiτ F iτ; iτ; + τ x F, ; +iτ; iτ; ]. x However, employing relation in 4], Vol. III, the latter Kummer functions can be expressed in terms of the modified Bessel functions of the first kind. Precisely, we obtain F ± iτ; ±iτ; x = Γ±iτ4x ±iτ e /x I ±iτ x..7 Hence after substitution of this expression and straightforward simplifications we get finally the value of the kernel.6, namely, π π e /x Kx,τ= x sinhπτ sinhπτ Re I iτ ] τ x F, ; +iτ; iτ; x ]. Returning to.5 and changing /x on x, we end up with the inversion formula., completing the proof of Theorem. 3. THE INDEX TRANSFORM. In this section we will examine the boundedness and invertibility conditions for the operator.. As we see, it represents a different transformation, where the integration is realized with respect to the index of the modified Bessel function of the first kind. Such integrals are, generally, unusual and have no common technique to evaluate. This is why the mapping properties of the transform. and its inversion formula could give such a method of their evaluation and a source of new formulas. We begin with Theorem 3. The index transform. is well-defined as a bounded operator and the following norm inequality holds G : L R; coshπτ] / dτ CR + Besides, if Ggx L ν, R +, <ν < /, then for all x> Gg CR+ π g L R;coshπτ] / dτ. 3. Ggt x+ t dt = π e x/ K iτ x gτ dτ. 3. coshπτ
Lebedev- Skalskaya Type Transforms 9 Proof. In fact, taking. and using., we find Ggx π e x/ x I iτ gτ dτ tanhπτ coshπτ π πτ π g L R;coshπτ] / dτ. gτ dτ coshπτ This proves 3.. When Ggx L ν, R +, <ν < /, we take the Mellin transform. from both sides of. and change the order integration by Fubini s theorem in the right-hand side of the obtained equality. Indeed, from the definition.6 of the modified Bessel function of the first kind and similar to.7,. we derive the inequality x I x sinhπτ I iτ, x>, τ R. 3.3 πτ Therefore, taking into account asymptotic formulas.4,.5, we have x s e x/ Re x x ν e x/ I Hence, appealing to Lemma, we get dx ΓsΓ sgg s=γ/ s I iτ x ] gτ dτ coshπτ dx gτ dτ coshπτ <, <ν < /. Γs + iτγs iτ gτdτ. 3.4 Meanwhile, relation in 4], Vol. III and the Parseval identity., which still holds for the limit case p = under conditions of the theorem yield ΓsΓ sgg sx s Ggt ds= dt, x>. 3.5 πi x+ t Consequently, employing relation in 4], Vol. III, we obtain from 3.4, 3.5 Ggt x+ t dt = πi Γ/ sx s Γs+iτΓs iτ gτdτds = x π e x/ gτ K iτ coshπτ dτ, where the interchange of the order of integration in the right-hand side of the latter equality is justified by Fubini s theorem with the use of the inequality. for the Macdonald function in ], p. 5, relation in 4], Vol. III and the estimate Γ/ sx s Γs+iτΓs iτ gτ dτ ds = Γ/ sx s x ν Γ/ sds K iτ yy s dy gτ dτ ds K cosδ yy ν dy e δ τ gτ dτ <, where <ν< / and δ is chosen from the intervalπ/4, π/ to satisfy the condition g L R;coshπτ] / dτ. Thus we established equality 3. and completed the proof of Theorem 3.
S. Yakubovich The inversion theorem for the index transform. is given by the following result. Theorem 4. Let gz/i be an even analytic function in the strip D = {z C: Rez <α < }, g= g =, gz/i=o, Imz uniformly in D. Then under conditions of Theorem 3 for all x R the inversion formula holds for the index transform. Γε +ix xsinhπx F, 3 ε; ε ix; ε+ ix; t gx= lim ε coshπx π where the limit is pointwise. π π Γε / x e t/ t ε Im I ix t/ sinπε+ ix ] ] Ggt dt, 3.6 Proof. Indeed, recalling 3., we multiply its both sides by e y/ K ix y/y ε for some positive ε, and integrate with respect to y over,. Hence we obtain y e y/ K ix y ε Ggt dtdy= y y π K ix y ε gτ K iτ dτdy. 3.7 y+ t coshπτ The interchange of the order of integration in the left-hand side of 3.7 can be motivated by Fubini s theorem, employing the generalized Young inequality a p p + bq q abr, a,b, p,q,r>, r p + q = r. 3.8 In fact, from.,. and the condition g L R; coshπτ] / dτ it follows thatggt=o, t. Now, letting in 3.8 a=y/q /p, b=t/p /q, we get p q/p+q q p/p+q y+ t + y q/p+q t p/p+q. q p Hence, choosing positive p, q such that < q/p + q < ε, we find the estimate e y/ y y ε Ggt Kix dtdy= e y/ y y ε Kix y+ t + e y/ y y ε Kix Ggt y+ t y + e y/ K dtdy C y ε dt e y/ K y Ggt t ν dt <, Ggt y+ t dtdy y ε q/p+q dy t p/p+q dt where C is an absolute positive constant. Thus it guarantees the change of the order of integration in the left-hand side of 3.7. Then calculating the inner integral, employing formula in 4], Vol. II and relation.7, we derive the equality K ix y y ε K iτ y + π π e t/ t ε i sinhπx gτ coshπτ dτdy= Γε +ix Γε / F, 3 ε; ε ix; ε+ ix; t I ix t/ sinπε ix I ] ixt/ Ggt dt. 3.9 sinπε+ ix In the meantime, employing.9 and the evenness of g, the left-hand side of 3.9 can be written as follows y y K ix y ε gτ K iτ coshπτ dτdy
Lebedev- Skalskaya Type Transforms y i y gz/i = πi K ix y ε I z dz dy. 3. i sinπz On the other hand, according to our assumption gz/i is analytic in the vertical strip Rez < α, g = g = and tends to zero when Im uniformly in the strip. Hence, appealing to the inequality for the modified Bessel function of the first kind see 3], p. 93 I z y I Rez y e π Imz /, <Rez<α, one can move the contour to the right in the latter integral in 3.. Then πi = πi K ix y y ε i i I z y α i gz/i dz dy sinπz y α+i y gz/i K ix y ε I z dz dy. 3. sinπz Now Rez>, and in the right-hand side of 3. it is possible to pass to the limit under the integral sign when ε and to change the order of integration due to the absolute and uniform convergence. Therefore the value of the integral see relation in 4], Vol. II K ix yi z y dy y = x + z leads us to the equalities = πi α+i α i y i y gz/i lim πi K ix y ε I z dz dy ε i sinπz gz/i α i α+i x + z sinπz dz=πi + α+i α i gz/i dz z ix zsinπz. 3. Hence conditions of the theorem allow to apply the Cauchy formula in the right-hand side of the latter equality in 3.. Thus y i y gz/i lim πi K ix y ε I z ε i sinπz dz dy= π gx xsinhπx, x R. Finally, combining with 3.9, we arrived at the inversion formula 3.6 and complete to proof of Theorem 4. Remark. When the passage to the limit under the integral sign is allowed in 3.6, the inversion formula takes the form Ggt Gt gx= coshπx x e t/ t ] I π t sinhπx Re ix π+x F, 3 ] ; ix; +ix; t Gt dt. 3.3
S. Yakubovich 4. INITIAL VALUE PROBLEM The Lebedev- Skalskaya type transform. can be successfully applied to solve an initial value problem for the following second order partial differential equation, involving the Laplacian x + y u+x u x + y u y + u=, x,y R \{}, 4. where = + is the Laplacian in R. Indeed, writing equation 4. in polar coordinates r,θ, we x y end up with the equation ] u u r + r + r + u r θ + u=. 4. r Lemma 4. Let gτ L R;e β / τ dτ, β,π. Then the function ur,θ= π e r/ r ] e θτ gτdτ Re I iτ coshπτ, 4.3 satisfies the partial differential equation4. on the wedger, θ : r >, θ < β, vanishing at infinity. Proof. In fact, the proof follows immediately from the direct substitution 4.3 into 4. and the use of.. The necessary differentiation with respect to r and θ under the integral sign is allowed via the absolute and uniform convergence, which can be justified, recalling the inequality. and the integrability condition g L R;e β / τ dτ, β,π of the lemma. Finally, the condition ur,θ, r is due to the asymptotic formula.4 for the modified Bessel function of the first kind. Now, as a direct consequence of Theorem 4 and Remark, we will formulate the initial value problem for equation 4. and give its solution. Theorem 5. Let gx be given by formula 3.3, where Gt satisfies conditions of Theorem 4. Then ur,θ, r >, θ < β by formula 4.3 will be a solution of the initial value problem for the partial differential equation4. subject to the initial condition ur,=gr.
