We obtain definite integrals for products of associated Legendre functions with Bessel functions, associated Legendre functions, and Chebyshev polynomials of the first kind using orthogonality and integral transforms. Key words: definite integrals; associated Legendre functions; Bessel functions; Chebyshev polynomials of the first kind Mathematics Subject Classification: 6A4; 33C5; 33C; 33C45; 35A8 Introduction In [3] and [6] (see also [4], we present some definite integral and infinite series addition theorems which arise from expanding fundamental solutions of elliptic equations on R d in axisymmetric coordinate systems which separate Laplace s equation. We utilize orthogonality and integral transforms to obtain new definite integrals from some of these addition theorems. Def inite integrals from integral transforms. Application of Hankel s transform We use the following result for x (, we define F (r ± := lim x r± F (x; see [5, p. 456]: Theorem. Let F : (, C be such that x F (x dx <, ( and let ν. Then (F (r + + F (r = uj ν (ur xf (xj ν (ux dx du ( provided that the positive number r lies inside an interval in which F (x has finite variation. 2 H.S. Cohl and H. Volkmer As an illustration for the method of integral transforms, we give the following example. According to [5, (3..] (see also [7, (6.6.3], we have for Re a >, b, c >, Re ν >, then e ka J ν (kbj ν (kcdk = π bc Q ν / ( a + b + c bc, (3 J ν : C \ (, ] C, for order ν C is the Bessel function of the first kind defined in [, (..] and Q µ ν : C \ (, ] C for ν + µ / N with degree ν and order µ, is the associated Legendre function of the second kind defined in [, (4.3.7, 4.]. The Legendre function of the second kind Q ν : C\(, ] C for ν / N is defined in terms of the zero-order associated Legendre function of the second kind Q ν (z := Q ν(z. If we apply Theorem to the function F : (, C defined by F (k := π c k e ka J ν (kc, (4 then condition ( is satisfied. If we use (4 in ( then we obtain the following result. If Re a >, c >, Re ν >, then J ν (kb Q ν / ( a + b + c bc b π c db = k e ka J ν (kc, which is actually given in [3, (.8.8.]. Hardy [8, (33.6] derives an interesting extension of (3 (see also [5, p. 389] and [, p. 7]. We apply the Whipple formula [, (4.9.7, 4.] to Hardy s extension to obtain ke ka J ν (kbj ν (kcdk ( a a = π + b + c bc (a + (b + c / (a + (b c / Q ν /, (5 bc for Re a >, b, c >, Re ν >. It is mentioned in [5, p. 389] that (5 can be derived from (3 by differentiation with respect to a. Using this integral and Theorem, we prove the following theorem. Theorem. Let Re a >, c >, Re ν >. Then ( J ν (kb a + b + c b π c (a + (b + c / (a + (b c / Q ν / db = bc a e ka J ν (kc. Proof. By applying Theorem to the function F : (, C defined by F (k := π c a e ka J ν (kc, using (5, we obtain the desired result. Now, we give another example of how an integral expansion for a fundamental solution of Laplace s equation on R 3 in parabolic coordinates can be used to prove a new definite integral. Theorem 3. Let m N, λ (,, µ, µ (,, µ µ, k (,. Then Q m / (χj m (kλ λ dλ = π λ µµ J m (kλ I m (kµ < K m (kµ >,

We apply Theorem to the function F : (, C defined by F (k := π λ µµ J m (kλ I m (kµ < K m (kµ >, I ν : C \ (, ] C, for ν C, is the modified Bessel function of the first kind defined in [, (.5.] and K ν : C \ (, ] C, for ν C, is the modified Bessel function of the second kind defined in [, (.7.4]. Again, we see that condition ( is satisfied. We obtain the desired result from [6, (4], namely, for λ (,, J m (kλj m (kλ I m (kµ < K m (kµ > kdk = Q m /(χ π λλ µµ.. Application of Fourier cosine transform Theorem 4. Let a, b (, with b a, k (,, Re ν >. Then Q ν / ( a + b + z ab cos(kz dz = π ab I ν (kbk ν (ka. (6 Proof. According to [7, (6.67.4] we have the integral relation I ν (kbk ν (ka cos(kzdk = ( a ab Q + b + z ν /, ab a, b (, with b < a, z >, Re ν >. We obtain the desired result from Theorem with F : (, C defined such that ab F (k := π k I ν(kbk ν (ka and ν =. Furthermore, if one makes the replacement z z/( a, k ka in [7, (7.6.6], namely Q ν / ( + z cos(kzdz = π ( ( k k I ν K ν, k (, and Re ν >, then we see that (6 holds also for any a, b (, with a = b. 3 Def inite integrals from orthogonality relations 3. Degree orthogonality for associated Legendre functions with integer degree and order We take advantage of the degree orthogonality relation for the Ferrers function of the first kind with integer degree and order, namely (cf. 7 Definite Integrals using Orthogonality and Integral Transforms 7 Proof. We start with bispherical coordinates on R 3, namely x = a sin θ cos φ a sin θ sin φ, y = cosh σ cos θ cosh σ cos θ, z = a sinh σ cosh σ cos θ, a >, σ [,, θ [, π], φ [, π. Note that the corresponding expression given in [6, 6., (45] is given incorrectly (see [4]. If we multiply both sides of (6 by sin θ P m n (cos θ and integrate over θ [, π], then by (7 we have obtained (4. We justify the interchange of integral and infinite sum in the same way as in the proof of Theorem Order orthogonality for associated Legendre functions with integer degree and order In this subsection we take advantage of the order orthogonality relation for the Ferrers function of the first kind with integer degree and order (cf. We then take advantage of the order orthogonality relation for the Ferrers functions of the first kind with integer degree and order. If we multiply both sides of (8 by (sin θ P m n (cos θ and integrate over θ (, π, by using (7 we obtain the desired result. Theorem 9, originating from (8, is the only example of a definite integral that we could find using the order orthogonality relation for the Ferrers functions of the first kind (7.
