1 STUDENT LEARNING NEWSLETTER Term 3 Week 6 This week s learning focus is Mathematics

2 4 6 LEARNING TEAM

3 Year 4/5 MATHEMATICS This term the year 4/5 students have been learning about financial literacy. They have been learning about exchange rates, different currencies and bank interest rates. Students in the 4/5 team had an incursion from a Commonwealth Bank representative who spoke about finance, savings and how children under the age of 15 years and 9 months could earn money. Will Thornton, Andrew Powning, Rohan Grasset, Caleb Perini and Ryan Nolan from the 4/5 learning neighborhood followed up on an activity from the incursion and decided to create a cupcake store of their own. With assistance from Yvonne Nolan and Amanda Thornton, the students made, priced and advertised the cupcakes and then sold the cupcakes on the corner of their street. They managed to sell all of the cupcakes, selling them for $2.50 each. Each students made $7 and were lucky to have the assistance of Elizabeth Thornton from Year 2. All students really enjoyed the experience and hope to do it again.

We are learning all about the coins, what they look like and their value.

11 What have we been doing lately in Maths? Exploring relationships between numbers, by investigating place value patterns (above) and function machines (left) Exploring multiplication and division with materials and storybased problems (Andrew, Taylah, Thomas, Freya and Vivethan sharing their multiplicative thinking below) This week we have started to explore fractions! (right)

13 SPECIALIST TEAM

14 ITALIANO Students in the 2/3 area have been working on their assessment for Semester 2. They had to write a piece about themselves, describe the weather where they live and say what type of weather they like and dislike. They then read out their paragraph to the class. Each class has their own booklet with their work. They are able to take these home to share.

15 ITALIANO The grade 4/5 students have been working on their written and oral assessment for Semester 2. They had to choose their favourite season and write about it. They will then read out their paragraph to the class. Each class will have their own booklets to take home and share.

16 ITALIANO Grade 6 students have been working on their written assessment for Semester 2. They have to write a paragraph about each season. They need to state the weather patterns during the season, which months the season falls in, in both Italy and Australia, what they like or dislike about the season and why and what they do during that season. They will then read their work out to the class as part of their oral assessment.

17 Science - Physics The Prep/1s continue to investigate human movement and the body parts involved. We answered questions, such as: - How did the person move? - What body parts did they use to move? Faseeh is balancing on the chain. He uses his arms, hands and legs to help him balance.

18 Science - Physics The 2/3 students have been looking at forces this week we have learnt about air and the way it pushes up against falling objects. Not many students predicted that the paper towel in the experiment below would stay dry.

19 The 4/5 students are working in collaborative groups to build balloon powered cars. Students are designing and re-designing cars to attempt to travel a distance of 5 metres. They have learnt a lot about wheels, axles, force and friction to build an effective design. Science - Physics

20 Science - Physics Collaborative groups explaining how a light bulb works. Grade 6 students continue to learn about electricity. They have been making and creating some excellent crafts, experiments and recipes to raise money for solar buddies.
