The native of Mobile, Ala., held the Cajuns scoreless over the game s final 8.2 innings and helped preserve a thin bullpen for the series finale that Troy won This is Hernandez s second Sun Belt Pitcher of the Week honor this season; he earned the award following his performance against Middle Tennessee back on April 14. He is the just the second player in the Sun Belt to win the weekly pitcher award twice this season; ULM s Randy Zeigler received the honor in back-to-back weeks back in March. Hernandez is only the second Trojan to earn the Sun Belt Pitcher of the Week honor twice in a season and just the fourth Troy pitcher to earn the award; Andrew Dickinson was twice named the Sun Belt Pitcher of the Week during the 2010 season. Hernandez needed just two strikeouts to work his masterpiece as he effectively used his fastball on both sides of the plate. The right-hander got the Cajuns to hit into four double plays as the Trojans went on to win the game 8-1. Drama in Lafayette Troy went into Lafayette last week looking to do something none of the great teams in the past had done, win a series at ULL. The Trojans did so by winning the final two games of a series filled with drama. Troy fell behind 4-0 in the opener before Danny Collins belted a 3-run homer in the sixth. ULL matched the three runs in the bottom of the frame and added another to lead 8-3. Collins and Tyler Hannah led off the ninth with backto-back homers (Troy s first since 2010) and the Trojans rallied for five runs to send the game to extra innings Troy fell behind 5-1 after the first inning in the series finale before rallying back TWICE to win the game Took a 7-5 lead with a 3-run seventh only to see ULL score three in the bottom of the inning to regain the lead Scored three runs in the top of the ninth inning to win 10-8; Danny Collins hit a lead-off double, but was thrown out at third on a sac bunt attempt. Brandon Brown followed with a bunt single and Jo-El Bennett tied the game with a double after suffering through cramps the entire at-bat. An intentional walk loaded the bases and a strikeout brought Tyler Vaughn to the plate, who delivered a 2-run single to win the game for the Trojans. Grounding the Owls It took seven weekends of Sun Belt Conference play before a team handed Florida Atlantic its first Sun Belt Conference series loss of the season; the Trojans were that team. Troy won the final two games of the series to claim the weekend victory Troy held FAU scoreless over the final 14.1 innings of the series Troy s 9-0 shutout of Florida Atlantic in the series finale marked the first time that the Owls had EVER been shutout in a Sun Belt Conference regular season game (165 games). In fact, the last time FAU was shutout in a conference game came in 2001 in the Atlantic Sun Troy hit five home runs over the weekend; the Owls had allowed just 10 home runs in 16 SBC games entering the series Hannah Named SBC Player of the Week Troy senior Tyler Hannah had an extra-base hit in all four of Troy s games last week and helped the Trojans clinch a spot in the Sun Belt Tournament. Hannah hit.412 (7-for-17) with two doubles, two home runs, six RBIs and seven runs scored as the Trojans won their fourth straight Sun Belt Conference series after winning two-of-three from South Alabama. The Gardendale, Ala., native stole a base and was perfect on 25 fielding opportunities at shortstop. Playing for the final time at Riddle-Pace Field, Hannah was 3-for-5 with three runs scored, two RBIs and a home run as the Trojans locked up the six seed with an 8-5 victory over South Alabama in the series finale Saturday. He also homered in the second game of the series after doubling in the opener and at Alabama. Troy entered the bottom of the ninth inning of the opener against South Alabama down 6-5 and needing a win to stay in the hunt for a Sun Belt Tournament spot. Hannah led off the frame drawing a walk which eventually led to a two-run inning to win the game. Since his arrival at Troy University in 2003, Bobby Pierce has presided over a period of unprecedented growth in the Trojans baseball program. The success of the program on the field is obvious. In his nine seasons the Trojans have captured three conference titles, have been to three NCAA Regionals, produced six consecutive seasons with a national award winner, had 12 All-Americans and has sent 23 players on to professional baseball. In conference competition, the Trojans have produced 36 all-conference selections, including three players who earned Pitcher of the Year honors, two who earned Player of the Year, one who was named Newcomer of the Year and, in 2009, a player named Freshman of the Year. In terms of team results, the Trojans led the nation in runs scored in 2006 and have been in the top 10 nationally in home runs four times since Pierce has been in charge of the program. In the past eight years, the Trojans have set new team season records in 10 offensive and 10 pitching categories. In January 2010, Pierce was honored by his peers for his career and dedication to the sport of baseball with an induction into the Alabama Baseball Coaches Association Hall of Fame. 5 Belt Continues to Be One of the Best The Sun Belt Conference continues to be one of the best conferences in the nation when it comes to baseball. Below are the NCAA RPI Rankings for the Sun Belt over the past 11 years: th th th th th th th th th th th Trojans Break Out the Bats Troy scored 26 runs on 21 hits in game two at Bethune- Cookman. It was the most runs since the Trojans also scored 26 against Brown in 2010 and scored 27 against ULM in The 23-run margin of victory was the largest since a 34-4 win over Stetson in Eight different players had a hit and 10 drove in a run in the game Troy had six freshmen and sophomores in the batting order that day The Trojans recorded seven extra-base hits (five doubles and two triples) by five different players; Tyler Vaughn and Jake Harrell had two doubles each Troy scored in 7-of-9 innings, had a hit in 8-of-9 innings (went in the first), sent 10 batters to the plate in the second, batted around in the sixth and sent 13 batters to the plate in a nine-run eighth inning. Home for the Trojans As the Trojans open the 2012 season, the roster is again very heavily loaded with home-grown players. A total of 24 members of the squad hail from Alabama. The roster also includes players from Florida (8), Georgia (2), North Carolina (1) and the Bahamas (1). Trojans Set New Standard for SBC Wins The Trojans 21 wins in Sun Belt play last season were the most in the program s six-year membership of the Sun Belt Conference. Troy had 20 league wins in its inaugural season in It s the most conference wins for a Trojan club since 2005 in the Atlantic Sun (23-7) and the second-highest total in program history. Peppering the Wall While balls were not going over the wall across the country last season due to the new BBCOR bats legislated by the NCAA, the Trojans made the adjustment and nearly set a school record for doubles. Troy belted 149 doubles on the season (up 34 from 2010) which was just eight shy of the school record of 157 set in 2006 when the Trojans set school records for runs, hits, doubles, RBIs and total bases. The Trojans finished second in the NCAA last season with their doubles total, while Tyler Hannah was third nationally with 27 doubles and Adam Bryant was eighth with 26 doubles. Vaughn hit.800 (8-for-10) with three doubles, five RBIs and five runs scored. The sophomore reached base in 10 consecutive plate appearances over a three-game period after being hit by a pair of pitches around his eight hits. The Regional appearance was the 19th all-time for Troy (Division I & II), fifth in 18 seasons as Division I member and third in the past six years. National Recognition After blazing to a 25-5 start last season, the Trojans finally received some national recognition as they appeared in all four major polls for the first time in program history (BA-18, CB-22, USA-25, NCBWA-27). In the USA/ESPN preseason poll, Troy was the only Sun Belt Conference school receiving votes and the highest rated team from Alabama. Defending the Title It is never easy to defend a title in sports, especially in the Sun Belt. The Trojans will be looking to become the first team since South Alabama in to win back-to-back regular season titles and just the third team since the league ditched divisions in 1995 (USA won ). Scheduled for Success The 2012 Trojan slate features 15 games against teams that advanced to the NCAA Regionals last season, with 13 of those 15 games coming on the road. The Skinny on Riddle-Pace Riddle-Pace Field received a state-of-the-art artificial playing surface prior to the 2008 season. The surface drains water at a rate of 10 inches per hour. The complex also features Triple-A quality lighting and a 27-foot wall in right field (30-feet at the scoreboard) to accommodate for a short-porch of only 310-feet due to University Avenue running behind the stadium. 7 Two-Hit Win Opening night was a little unusual for the Trojans... but the end result was fairly typical. Troy won the game 7-3, but not in a conventional method. The Trojans only had two hits in the game, but drew nine walks, were hit by four pitches and forced four Central Michigan errors. Trojans in the Pros The Troy University baseball program currently has six players active at various levels of professional baseball. Clint Robinson opens the 2012 season on the Kansas City Royals 40-man roster after winning the Texas League (AA) triple crown in 2010 and batting.326/.399/.533 with 23 home runs, 35 doubles and 100 RBIs in 134 games at AAA Omaha last year. Mike Rivera, who has played 189 career MLB games between the Tigers, Padres, Marlins and Brewers, is expected to open the season in AAA. Chase Whitley is quickly moving up the Yankees organization after making his debut in Whitley made 19 appearances in AA Trenton last season and posted a 3.38 ERA. This past summer, Adam Bryant began his pro career for the Twins in A ball, while T.J. Rivera played for the New York Mets in the Rookie League and Low A. Late Pitching Debuts Ivan Carter and Ali Knowles made their pitching debuts for the Trojans in the game against Alabama A&M on April 25. Carter, a sophomore, started the game and tossed four scoreless innings while holding the Bulldogs to one hit. Knowles originally signed with Troy as a pitcher, but had Tommy John surgery forcing him to the outfield as a freshman. Knowles struck out the side around a pair of walks and two hits as he pitched the ninth inning. Friendly Confines Since coach Bobby Pierce took over the Troy baseball program in 2003, the Trojans have been hard to beat at home. In his 10 seasons, Troy has a (.696) record at home. Troy set a new program record with 30 home wins in 2011 capped by a 14-1 win over Samford in the finale. Troy is (.720) all-time at Riddle-Pace Field in 41 seasons. Pick a Bat, Any Bat The Trojans will take a new approach to the bat game this year. Without an official bat contract in place, the coaching staff is letting the players choose which bat they would like to hit with Troy Bat Choices: Marucci Rawlings TPX Easton DeMarini RIP-IT Troy Sweeps SBC Honors Troy swept the weekly Sun Belt Conference baseball honors as Danny Collins was named Hitter of the Week and Joe Hernandez was named Pitcher of the Week on April 16. The pair are the first to earn Sun Belt honors for the Trojans this season and mark just the second time this season that a single school has swept both awards. Collins, who was one of four Trojans to hit over.400 on the week, was 7-for-16 (.438) with a double, a triple and two home runs to help Troy to a 3-1 record on the week and a series victory over Middle Tennessee. He opened the week with a pair of hits and four RBIs in Troy s 15-7 victory over Jacksonville State. Collins followed that with five hits, five RBIs, a double and two homers in the first two games against Middle Tennessee. Collins slugged on the week, drove in nine runs and scored seven times. He was also perfect on nine total chances defensively at third base. After watching Middle Tennessee rack up 21 hits in the series opener, Hernandez shut down the Blue Raiders over 6.1 innings in game two before having to leave the game due to cramps on a warm Saturday evening. The junior from Mobile, Ala., struck out eight Middle Tennessee batters without issuing a walk. Hernandez allowed just two unearned runs in the first inning after the third out of the frame was dropped on a routine fly ball to the outfield. He held the Blue Raiders to five hits in just his second career Sun Belt Conference start. Taming the Tide Alabama made just its third visit to Riddle-Pace Field since 1999 and Troy did not make it a pleasant visit as the Trojans handed the Crimson Tide a 9-0 defeat. It was the first shutout against Alabama in a nonconference game since 2007 and the largest Troy victory in the series. Three Troy pitchers -- Ryan Brady, Nate Hill and Tyson Workman -- combined to hold Alabama to just four singles on the night, while the Trojan batters smacked around seven Crimson Tide pitchers for 12 hits. A Riddle-Pace Field record crowd of 2,936 were there to witness the Trojan victory.
