1 Game 19: LSU vs. UL-Lafayette-Tuesday, Mar. 12,, 6:30 p.m., Alex Box Stadium Final tune-up: LSU hosts Louisiana-Lafayette in the Tigers final game before starting SEC play on Friday. The Tigers will be searching for their second fourgame winning streak of the season, as LSU swept UL- Monroe over the weekend. The Tigers are 5-2 on their current 11-game homestand. LSU is 12-3 this year in the friendly confines of Alex Box Stadium. LSU is 4-2 this year against in-state competition. The Tigers welcome Vanderbilt to Baton Rouge to start SEC play this weekend. Scouting the Cajuns: UL-Lafayette comes in at 11-6, but was swept at home this past weekend by nationallyranked Houston. The three losses to the Cougars dropped the Cajuns out of the Collegiate Baseball poll, where they were ranked 27th last week. The Cajuns began the season at the Astros College Classic at Astros Field in Houston, defeating Texas Tech and Texas while losing to Texas A&M. The Cajuns are 1-5 against ranked teams this year, with their only win coming against Texas. UL-Lafayette also lost to Rice in the Owls Coca-Cola Classic. The Cajuns have only two players remaining from their 2000 College World Series team left-handed pitchers Justin Gabriel and Andy Gros. About the series: LSU has won five of the last six meetings between the schools and holds a all-time edge. The two teams played only once in 2001, and that was a 12-7 LSU victory on Apr. 10 at Zephyr Field in Metairie. The Tigers won the last meeting in Baton Rouge in 2000, 8-2. The game was attended by 8,622 fans, an Alex Box Stadium record that still stands. The Cajuns last win in the series was an 11-3 win in Baton Rouge in The Tigers are 3-0 against UL-Lafayette in NCAA regional play, winning games in 1990, 1991 and 1998 at Alex Box Stadium. The 1991 game was the regional final and was a springboard for the Tigers to their first national championship. The teams will play again next Tuesday at Moore Field in Lafayette. Here s a look at those Tigers who have been bit by the injury bug this year: LHP Jason Determann Out for the season with a torn ligament in left arm. Will undergo Tommy John surgery on Friday. Determann pitched in two games, getting win in relief on Feb. 9 against Birmingham-Southern and starting and going 3.0 innings at Centenary on Feb. 20. OF Jay Mattox Freshman is out for the year after undergoing surgery to repair torn cartilage in left wrist. Mattox, a fourth-round pick of the Chicago White Sox in last year s draft, made pinch-running appearances in two games. RHP Chad Vaught Vaught hasn t pitched since Feb. 12 and received cortisone last Tuesday to try to relieve tightness in his shoulder. He return is uncertain. SS Aaron Hill Hill separated the AC joint in his shoulder on Feb. 16 against Mercer, and has seen limited action in three games since. Status for this weekend s series against Vanderbilt will be reevaluated later this week. RHP Jake Tompkins Tompkins missed a start on Feb. 24 at Houston due to a strained oblique muscle, then started the next Sunday against Long Beach St. He starts tonight against UL-Lafayette. OF Matt Heath Heath suffered a cut under his right eye when a foul ball caromed off of his sunglasses in the ninth inning on Sunday. Heath did not need stitches and should be in the starting lineup tonight. Rallycats II? Although the 1988 Fighting Tigers failed to reach the NCAA tournament, the team did win several games with late-inning rallies to earn the nickname Rallycats. This year s version of the Tigers may also be in line to be called the Rallycats, as LSU has won eight of its 13 games so far in comeback fashion, including five after trailing by three or more runs. The latest comebacks came this past weekend against UL-Lafayette, as the Tigers overcame 3-0 deficits on both Friday and Sunday to win; on Friday, LSU trailed by that score until scoring four times in the eighth inning, and the Tigers fell behind 3-0 after the first inning on Sunday before winning a wild game. Last year, overcame a deficit in 18 of its 44 victories, but only six of those 18 involved deficits of three runs or more.

3 Still playing it close If LSU continues its current maddening style of play, the Tigers might want to consider hiring a cardiologist. Exactly half of LSU s 18 games have been decided by one run, which is just three fewer one-run games than LSU played in 67 contests in 2001, and two more than LSU had in 69 games in Fortunately for the fans at Alex Box Stadium, LSU has come out in front twice as often, as the Tigers carry a 6-3 record in one-run games into tonight s contest with UL-Lafayette. LSU was only 5-7 in onerun contests in Five of those six one-run wins have seen LSU score the go-ahead run in the eighth inning or later, including the four-run rally on Friday against ULM. The Tigers have won three games on the final at-bat of the game, twice defeating Birmingham-Southern and beating Long Beach State on Mar. 3 in 11 innings. Streak stays alive In any hitting streak, you re going to need some good fortune along with some obvious hitting ability. LSU third baseman Wally Pontiff got the good fortune on Sunday, as it appeared the streak would end at nine games as he walked twice, hit into a double play and walked again. But in the eighth inning, a UL-Monroe error gave Pontiff a fifth time at the plate. Indeed, the LSU captain came through, doubling off the wall in right field to score David Raymer with what would be the winning run, as LSU went ahead 8-5 and held on for an 8-7 victory. Pontiff is hitting.553 (21-for-38) with 10 RBI during the streak, and he has four three-hit games during the string. The Metairie native is getting closer to his career-high hitting streak of 14 games done in the final 14 games of Pontiff leads the Tigers in batting average (.413) and on-base percentage (.542), and has struck out only eight times in 84 plate appearances. Harris gets two homers, start at first Tonight, LSU freshman Clay Harris will start at his fourth different position of the year, as coach Smoke Laval will try the Slidell native at first base. Harris certainly deserves the opportunity to start after Sunday s performance, as he clouted a pair of two-run home runs to lift LSU to an 8-7 win over UL-Monroe. His first home run in the third gave LSU the lead for the first time, and his blast in the seventh broke a 5-5 tie. Harris is batting.400 (8-for-20), and went 6-for- 15 last week in three games. His.900 slugging percentage leads the Tigers. On the mound, Harris struck out a career-high eight last Tuesday against Tulane and is 1-0 with a 4.96 ERA in six appearances. No Walking LSU walked only four batters in the 27 innings of the UL-Monroe series, and Tiger pitchers have yielded only 43 walks in innings, an average of 2.32 per nine innings. Only one LSU hurler has allowed more than six walks, and that s Bo Pettit, who has yielded 12 in 33.0 innings. LSU hasn t given up more than two walks in a game since the first game of the March 2 doubleheader against Long Beach St., and has yielded two or fewer walks in 11 of 18 contests. Pitchers keep it in the park LSU pitchers are keeping the ball in the park, as they have yielded only seven home runs in 18 games this year. Tiger hurlers have given up more than one home run in a game only once in 2002, and that was two in the season opener to Birmingham-Southern. LSU pitchers are on pace to allow only 22 home runs in the regular season, fewer than half the total of 51 allowed in Starting the SEC on the right foot Last year, LSU did something it hadn t done since 1978, and that s enter conference play on a losing streak. The Tigers lost to Southern and Tulane before starting SEC play that weekend at Georgia. In 15 of 18 seasons under Skip Bertman, the Tigers won their final game before getting into the SEC, losing only in 1992 (George Washington), 1993 (Arkansas St.) and last year.

LSU coach Smoke Laval Ray Smoke Laval may be following a legend at LSU in Skip Bertman, but Laval is no stranger to the LSU program, having served 10 years ( ) under Bertman as his top assistant and as a graduate assistant to Jack Lamabe (1979) before that. Laval, who was named Bertman s successor on July 18, 2000, came back to Baton Rouge after seven successful seasons at Louisiana-Monroe. Laval guided the Indians to a record from and led ULM to three NCAA regional appearances, including the regional final in 2000 against LSU. He was named the Southland Conference Coach of the year in 1999 and led the Indians to the SLC crown in 1999 and During Laval s tenure as Bertman s top assistant, LSU won 483 games, reached the College World Series five times, and won the national championship in 1991 and Laval worked with 24 future major league players during that time and recruited nine first-team All-Americans. Overall (8th year) This weekend in the SEC The Southeastern Conference s 30-game baseball schedule begins this weekend with Vanderbilt visiting LSU. Here s a look at the other five opening--weekend series: South Carolina at Mississippi State Probably the best matchup of the first weekend, as pitching-rich Gamecocks invade Starkville. Bulldogs won two of three last year and play first SEC series of Ron Polk s second MSU tenure. Tennessee at Alabama Vols went to Omaha last year, but have struggled against ferocious earlyseason schedule (1-2 at Miami, 0-3 at Arizona St.). Tide on track to return to post-season after oneyear hiatus thanks to All-America candidate Lance Cormier. Ole Miss at Florida One of the two top series on opening weekend, as Pat McMahon s club has been on power binge early in season. Rebels will challenge for SEC West and first overall titles since 1977 and host LSU next weekend in early-season showdown.. Kentucky at Auburn Interesting series matching top-notch pitchers in UK s Joseph Blanton and AU s Eric Brandon. Wildcats anxiously awaiting opening of new Cliff Hagan Stadium next weekend. Arkansas at Georgia Razorbacks pitching staff may be SEC s best, but hitting has been inconsistent. Defending league champ Georgia is adjusting to life after Ron Polk and several starters from team that made it to Omaha.
