Sudoku Xtra Welcome back to Sudoku Xtra issue, packed to breaking with a wide range of logic and number puzzles, and even more variety than was stuffed into issue. s you flick through you ll come across some Sudoku variations I guarantee you won t have seen before, but full instructions are at the top of every page so you can print (or tear out) just the particular puzzle pages you want at any one time. onvenient, isn t it?! New for issue is the ommunity Puzzles section at the back of the magazine. This is the place to get your own puzzles in print, whether based on existing designs or brand new types of your own. Some well-known puzzle producers have kindly contributed to this first edition. Sudoku Xtra is a monthly magazine, with issues appearing in the middle of each calendar month - issue is out in mid-january. vailable immediately on (download) and Lulu.com (printed), then on mazon.com (printed) in the following week or so. >> Hashi Join circled numbers with horizontal or vertical lines, such that each number has as many lines connected to it as specified by its value. No lines may cross, and no more than two lines may join any pair of numbers. The finished layout must allow you to travel from any number to any other number just by following one or more lines. >> over Puzzle >> Hanjie Shade in squares in the grid to reveal a picture whilst obeying the clue constraints at the end of each line. The clues provide, in order from the left or the top, a list of the length of every run of consecutive shaded squares in each row or column. Each run is separated by at least one empty square. For example, would mean there is a run of shaded squares, followed by at least one empty square, and then or more consecutive shaded squares. Sudoku Xtra issue, December. 3 Sudoku Xtra >> Masyu Draw a single loop that passes through the centre of every circle. > On a shaded circle you must turn degrees and continue straight for at least one square each side. > On a white circle you must continue straight but then you must turn degrees on one or both of the adjacent squares. > You cannot pass through a square more than once. Sign up on to receive automatic notification when the next issue of Sudoku Xtra is available!

Sudoku Xtra >> alcudoku Place the numbers to (or to the size of the grid) into each row and column of the grid. > The value at the top-left of each bold-lined region must be obtained when all of the numbers in that region have the given operation (+, -,, ) applied. For - and operations start with the largest number in the region and then subtract or divide by the other numbers. + + > Remember that you can repeat a number within a bold-lined region, unlike in Killer Sudoku

Sudoku Xtra >> Slitherlink Draw a single loop by connecting together the dots so that each numbered square has the specified number of adjacent line segments. > Dots can only be joined by straight horizontal or vertical lines. > The loop cannot cross or overlap itself in any way.

Sudoku Xtra >> onsecutive Sudoku Place to into every row, column and marked x box, whilst obeying the white consecutive markers between certain squares. > onsecutive markers indicate all touching squares with consecutive numbers, such as &, & or &. > Don t forget that squares without a white marker between are not consecutive.

Sudoku Xtra >> Hitori Shade in squares so that no number occurs more than once per row or column. > Shaded squares cannot touch in either a horizontal or vertical direction. > ll unshaded squares must form a single continuous area. heck out the discussion forums at to chat about the puzzles and more with fellow readers!

Sudoku Xtra >> Samurai Star Place to into each row, column and marked x box of each of the five underlying x grids. > Don t forget the hidden fifth x Sudoku grid in the centre of the puzzle.

Sudoku Xtra >> Samurai Star Diagona[wfu]l Place to into each row, column, and diagonal of nine squares starting/ending at a bold line, as well as each bold-lined x box. > There are diagonals, including some that wouldn t be there if this puzzle was made up of just overlapping regular Sudoku-X. This has an interesting effect on the solution!

Sudoku Xtra >> Samurai Killer alcudoku Inequality Place to into each row, column and x box of the five x grids. > omplete the alcudoku cages so that the values in the cage add/ multiply/subtract or divide to give the stated total. For subtraction and division start with the largest value, e.g. - could be solved with --. > Numbers can be repeated within the cages, subject to Sudoku rules. > Inequality signs indicate that certain squares contain values greater/ less-than adjacent ones - the arrow points to the smaller number

Sudoku Xtra >> Number Link Draw a series of separate lines, each connecting a pair of identical numbers, as in the example. > No more than one line can pass through any square, and lines can only travel horizontally or vertically between squares. > There is a unique solution to each puzzle, and that solution uses all of the squares.

Sudoku Xtra >> Jigsaw Sudoku x, x &x Place to, to or to as appropriate into each row, column and bold-lined jigsaw region.

Sudoku Xtra >> Toroidal Sudoku & Toroidal onsecutive Place to into each row, column and bold-lined jigsaw region. > Some regions wrap around the outside of the puzzle, travelling off one end of a row/column and continuing on the square at the opposite end of the same row/column. > You might find it easier if you colour in the different regions first. > In the third puzzle, toroidal consecutive markers are used instead of toroidal regions. The fourth puzzle has both toroidal consecutive markers and toroidal regions. See page for consecutive rules.

Sudoku Xtra >> Kakuro Place a digit from to into each white square to solve the clues. > Each horizontal run of white squares adds up to the total above the diagonal line to the left of the run, and each vertical run of white squares adds up to the total below the diagonal line above the run. > No digit can be used more than once in any run.

Sudoku Xtra >> Futoshiki Place to, to or to into each row and column whilst obeying the inequality signs. > Less than ( < ) and greater than ( > ) signs between some squares indicate that the values in these two squares must be greater than or less than one another as indicated by the sign. The sign always points towards the smaller number.

Sudoku Xtra >> Killer Sudoku Place to into each row, column and x box whilst obeying the cage totals. > The contents of each dashed line cage must sum to the total given at the top-left. > You cannot repeat a number within a dashed line cage.

Sudoku Xtra >> Skyscraper Place to (or to ) into each row and column. > Each number in the completed grid represents a building of that many storeys. Place the buildings in such a way that each given number outside the grid represents the number of buildings that can be seen from that point, looking only at that number s row or column. > building with a higher value always obscures a building with a lower value, whilst a building with a lower value never obscures a building with a higher value.

Sudoku Xtra >> Samurai Sudoku Place to into each row, column and x box of each of the grids.

Sudoku Xtra >> Samurai Jigsaw Sudoku Place to into each row and column of each of the grids, as well as each of the bold-lined jigsaw shapes.

Sudoku Xtra >> Skyscraper Samurai Star Sudoku (SSSS) Place to into each row, column and marked x box of each the five underlying x grids, whilst obeying the Skyscaper clues. > Don t forget the hidden fifth x Sudoku grid in the centre of the puzzle. > See opposite for instructions on solving Skyscraper puzzles.

Sudoku Xtra >> Skyscraper Sudoku Place to, to or to into each row, column and bold-lined box.

Sudoku Xtra >> Hanjie Shade in squares in the grid to reveal a picture whilst obeying the clue constraints at the end of each line. > The clues provide, in order from the left or the top, a list of the length of every run of consecutive shaded squares in each row or column. > Each run is separated by at least one empty square. For example, means there is a run of shaded squares, followed by at least one empty square, and then or more consecutive shaded squares. lue (top): Restful lue (bottom): loser Look,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,

Sudoku Xtra >> Sudoku Inequality Place to into each row, column and marked x box whilst obeying the inequality signs. > Less than ( < ) and greater than ( > ) signs between some squares indicate that the values in these two squares must be greater than or less than one another as indicated by the sign. The sign always points towards the smaller number.

Sudoku Xtra >> Jigsaw Sudoku x Place to into each row, column and bold-lined shape. Get new puzzles every day on my interactive puzzle website:

Sudoku Xtra >> [Jigsaw] Sudoku Extra Regions Place to into each row, column, shaded area and marked x box whilst obeying the inequality signs. > On the bottom two puzzles the x boxes are replaced by bold-lined shapes.

Sudoku Xtra >> Killer Sudoku Jigsaw Place to into each row, column and bold-lined shape, whilst obeying the Killer Sudoku cage totals. > The contents of each dashed line cage must sum to the total given at the top-left. > You cannot repeat a number within a dashed line cage. >> Killer Sudoku X Place to into each row, column, x box and each of the two main diagonals, whilst obeying the Killer Sudoku cage totals.

Sudoku Xtra >> Samurai Star Killer alcudoku Place to into each row, column and x box of each of the underlying five x Sudoku grids, whilst obeying the cage totals. > The value at the top-left of each inner marked cage must be obtained when all of the numbers in that cage have the given operation (+, -,, ) applied. For - and operations start with the largest number in the cage and then subtract or divide by the other numbers. > In Killer alcudoku you can repeat a number within a cage

Sudoku Xtra >> Yajilin Draw a single loop using only horizontal and vertical lines such that the loop does not pass through any square more than once. > ny squares which the loop does not visit must be shaded, but no two of these shaded squares can touch in either a horizontal or vertical direction. > Numbers with arrows indicate the exact number of shaded squares in a given direction in a specific row or column, but not all shaded squares are necessarily identified with arrows. >> Nurikabe Shade in squares so that every number in the puzzle remains as part of a continuous unshaded area of precisely the given number of squares. > There can be only one number per unshaded area. > Shaded squares cannot form any solid x (or larger) areas. > ll the shaded squares must form one continuous area, moving left/ right/up/down between squares. > White areas cannot touch each other in either a horizontal or vertical direction.

Sudoku Xtra >> Feedback Thanks to everyone who has been in touch since issue both by and on the Sudoku Xtra forums at There have already been nearly posts to the forum, so stop by and check it out - and please do feel free to get involved! Please note that the mazon.com version of Sudoku Xtra can take anything up to days to become available after publication, due to mazon s database update schedule. s of this issue mazon.co.uk and other localised sites do not carry Sudoku Xtra. (Sorry!) >> Xtra Sudoku Place to into each row, column, main diagonal and bold-lined x shape. > White bars indicate consecutive numbers in the squares which they join (e.g. &, & or &). > Squares without a white bar between do not contain consecutive numbers. > Inequality signs (</>) between squares point to the smaller number of a pair.

Sudoku Xtra ommunity Puzzles >> Even More Puzzles! Welcome to the very first Sudoku Xtra ommunity Puzzles section. For this initial section, some top-quality puzzle producers have kindly also contributed their content to the magazine. If you d like to see your puzzles in this section, please get in touch! nd if you ve never made a puzzle before, why not start now?! You can even design your own type, as all of this month s contributors have. Send your designs to Gareth@SudokuXtra.com. In return you ll get your puzzles seen by Sudoku Xtra readers, and of course you ll receive a free PDF of the magazine. >> Puzzle L Lewis has sent in this brand new puzzle design, where you must place L shapes, each squares in size, into the grid whilst obeying all of the constraints. > Numbers in the grid indicate the number of unshaded squares that can be seen both horizontally and vertically from that square, including the square itself. ounting stops when you reach a shaded square. > L shapes cannot touch, even diagonally. > ll unshaded squares must be connected, so you can travel from any one to any other. > The L shapes can be at any of orientations (L and its, and degree rotations) > lue squares are never shaded.

Sudoku Xtra ommunity Puzzles >> Modula Vexus Puzzles have kindly supplied three each of two of their entirely original logic puzzles. > You can find out about Vexus Puzzle Design s other unique puzzle types on their website at > See below for instructions. ESY MEDIUM Solving aid. HRD Solving aid. Solving aid. Take a look at the completed Modula puzzle below. The puzzle contains white hexagons and shaded hexagons. Each number from to appears once in each shaded and white hexagon. The number that appears in each white hexagon is equal to the total of the numbers in the surrounding shaded hexagons... however only the last digit of the total is used. s an example, look at the white hexagon containing the number. The surrounding shaded hexagons contain the numbers,, and. The total of this is +++=. Since we only use the last digit of the total, we get the answer. Puzzles on this page Vexus Puzzle Design. Magazine

Sudoku Xtra ommunity Puzzles >> Navigrid Place to into each grid by using only the possible moves provided, in this original logic puzzle kindly contributed by Vexus Puzzle Design. > Look at the example puzzle and solution on the right. The collection of movements underneath the grid can be used to connect the numbers together in sequence. For example to move from the number to the number you need to use the movement that represents a movement of one square to the right. This is indicated by the diamond with the number on the right-hand side. > One final rule is that you can not move through a black square; so for example you would not be able to move from the square containing the number to the square containing the number. ESY MEDIUM HRD Puzzles on this page Vexus Puzzle Design. Magazine

Sudoku Xtra ommunity Puzzles >> In Search of ig Foot For each puzzle, locate each igfoot ( per puzzle) using the clues given. > The numbers tell how many of the neighbouring cells (orthogonal and diagonal) contain a igfoot. No two igfoot may be adjacent orthogonally, and the number in a igfoot cell shows the wrong amount. The first puzzle is done for you as an example. > reated by David Millar. Visit The Griddle ( for this puzzle and more. > Leave feedback or get updates - on Twitter or subscribe to the RSS feed or updates. Puzzles on this page David Millar. Magazine

Sudoku Xtra ommunity Puzzles >> larity Media larity Media have kindly supplied three different puzzles. > You can find out more about their wide range of puzzles online at >> King s Journey In the top-left puzzle, find a route from to by moving only as a king moves in chess: left, right, up, down or diagonally to adjacent squares. You must visit every square, and the given numbers must occur at the n th square in that journey. >> Knight s Tour In the bottom-left puzzle, use the same rules as for King s Journey but instead of moving as a king does in chess, move as the knight does: two squares in one direction and then one square perpendicularly. >> Easy as an you fit the letters, and exactly once each into every row and column of squares in this empty grid? Two squares in each row or column will therefore be empty. Letters in the shaded areas outside the grid indicate which letter appears closest to that end of the row or column. For example, an is the first letter found when reading left to right along the first row. Puzzles on this page larity Media Ltd. Magazine
