1 Insect Resistance and Aversion Breaking the cycle and winning the battle

2 M E T A B O L I C R E S I S T A N C E Resistant insects may detoxify or destroy the toxin faster than susceptible insects, or prevent the toxins from reaching target sites by bonding to proteins in their bodies. Metabolic resistance is the most common mechanism and often presents the greatest challenge.

3 A L T E R E D T A R G E T R E S I S T A N C E The site where the toxin usually binds in the insect becomes modified to reduce the insecticides effects.

4 B E H A V I O R A L R E S I S T A N C E Resistant insects may avoid the toxin by a change from their normal activity. Insects may simply stop feeding or move to an untreated area. Some malaria transmitting mosquitoes in Africa developed a preference for resting outside that prevented them to come in contact with areas in the interior that had been treated.

5 B E H A V I O R A L R E S I S T A N C E Roaches stopped feeding on baits in the early days of cockroach baiting because they had an aversion to the inert ingredients used in the most popular baits. Changes to the bait matrix, not the active ingredient, caused the roaches to begin feeding again.

6 P E N E T R A T I O N R E S I S T A N C E Resistant insects may absorb the toxin more slowly than susceptible insects. Penetration resistance occurs when the insect s outer cuticle develops barriers which can slow the absorption of the chemicals into their bodies.

7 P E N E T R A T I O N R E S I S T A N C E A recent study by the University of Sydney in Australia noted that bed bugs have developed a thicker cuticle that allows them to survive exposure to commonly used insecticides. The thicker the cuticle, the more likely that the bed bugs would survive a treatment.
