Head Coach Jim Schwartz, however, felt that the team failed to capitalize on chances throughout the game on both the offensive and defensive sides of the ball, resulting in a 24-6 loss. Schwartz on the opportunity for players to rise to the occasion: We missed this opportunity. It was a great chance for other guys to step up. Specifically on offense, with Calvin Johnson on the sidelines, the Lions young receiver corps saw extensive playing time across the board. A stingy Browns pass-rush allowed for minimal production through the air, though, something Schwartz said he had hoped to improve on in the team s first road test. Schwartz on the lack of a vertical threat against the Browns: We had some shots schemed in there, but the opportunity didn t really come out to be able to get them out there. Regardless of whether you throw it deep or you throw it underneath, you ve got to be able to get some chunks in the game somewhere and when I say chunks, I mean plus-twenty plays. In addition, penalties and miscommunication prevented any consistency within the Lions positional rotations throughout the game. A personal foul on Ndamukong Suh in the first quarter on Browns QB Brandon Weeden resulted in a 15-yard gain, and additional calls on RB Reggie Bush and DE Willie Young granted the Browns favorable field position on three different occasions. With players competing for roster spots, Schwartz acknowledged that minimizing penalties is imperative if the team is to improve moving forward. Schwartz on personal fouls: That s another thing we ve got to do a better job of. It doesn t matter what happens out there. Reggie (Bush) got hit right in the back after a play, but that doesn t give any reason to go put our offense in a worse position by getting 15. The coverage has a great coverage and then (Ndamukong) Suh gets a personal foul. Regardless of what you think of the call, it doesn t matter. It gets called and we pay the price for it; same thing on the punt with Willie (Young). That s something that last week we didn t have. Last week we did a much better job of controlling the game and our emotions and this game we didn t. With two preseason games still remaining against the New England Patriots and Buffalo Bills, respectively, Bush believes the loss at Cleveland provides key takeaway points for the team. Bush on the learning from the loss at Cleveland: We definitely can learn from this one. We can really take a lot away from this one and use it to get ready for the next week. 3 WORKING OUT THE KINKS Through eight quarters of preseason play, the Lions highpowered offense is still working to build momentum, generating only four scores (1 TD, 3 FG). After Detroit s 24-6 loss at Cleveland, Bush reflected on the ability to score points. Bush on the team s lack of scoring: We should be concerned a little bit. No doubt, because we are better than that. We have to hold ourselves accountable, because we need to put points on the board. The offense s job is to score points and we didn t do a good job of starting off today. Schwartz on the offense: We played poorly on offense. Dropped balls, didn t execute, didn t move the ball, didn t have any explosive plays (and we) didn t score any touchdowns. There s going to be things that come up in preseason games and things like that. Again, we don t actually game plan in preseason games, but I want to see us execute better. I think we all want to execute better. We want to put the ball in the end zone because that s what it s all about. QB Matthew Stafford finished the game 11-of-16 for 74 yards before exiting late in the second half. While his favorite target, Calvin Johnson, sat out the game, Stafford was adamant that Johnson s absence does not excuse the Lions lack of production on offense against the Browns. Stafford on his assessment of the offense: The biggest thing for us is just staying on the field, Stafford told the Detroit Free Press. We didn t do really two things, didn t stay on the field and didn t have many explosive (plays). Those lead to points in this league and, obviously, Calvin was out tonight, but that s no excuse. We can t use it as an excuse, can t use it as a crutch. We got to have the other guys step up and make plays. Schwartz also identified issues with the defense as the Browns three quarterbacks combined for 21-of-29 for 242 yards with an average quarterback rating of Poor tackling has been a common theme so far in preseason, according to Schwartz, and the Lions head coach was quick to discuss how to improve that facet of the game. Schwartz on the team s missed tackles: Last week, when it s the first game, you sort of expect that a little bit and the point we made was we need to see improvement from last game to this game and we didn t see that. Most of the tackling came from core leverage. It really wasn t the actual tackle as much as it was the line of attack that they had and the leverage and angle that they took. It s something that we definitely need to do better on. The Lions gave up 313 total net yards in the loss to the Browns, nearly 100 more yards than Detroit generated. Schwartz understands the role preseason plays in players development, but also acknowledged that the time to make improvements is now. Schwartz on adjusting the defense: No excuses. We didn t game plan but that has nothing to do with physically getting beat, Schwartz told The Detroit News. That s the most disappointing part of it. They ran the ball against eight-man fronts and that is unacceptable. DUAL-THREAT WORKHORSE When the Lions signed Bush this offseason, they knew they were getting an explosive playmaker. But after last week s preseason game with the Browns, the team realized that Bush can also be the team s workhorse, game in and game out. detroit lions Game Information

4 Despite limited action in the preseason, Bush has the most carries and touches on the team, most of which came on one drive against the Browns last week. The Lions fed No. 21 the ball eight times on a 14-play drive that resulted in a K David Akers 48-yard field goal in the second quarter. Bush caught three passes for 21 yards and carried the rock five times for 14 yards on that drive alone. He led the team in receiving with 44 yards overall, proving he could be that multi-purpose weapon out of the backfield. Stafford on building a relationship with Bush: That s what he can do. He can make plays for us in the passing game. He caught all kinds of different routes tonight, and made some great plays for us. There are still some things we left out there, he and I, and we ll keep working to get that fixed. Adding Bush to an offense with playmakers like Johnson and a core of athletic tight ends should open room over the middle for Stafford to find his newly acquired running back in the open field, which could result in big plays for the Lions this season. Bush on working with Stafford: It was pretty important to connect on some passes, start building that chemistry. Getting ready for the regular season, that s what the preseason is for. Fine tuning and seeing what errors we need to improve on and get better at. It was good to connect on a few passes with him. Establishing an effective run presence to complement his talents in the passing game will be among the goals for Bush and the Lions offense this season. In 2012, the Lions recorded 17 rushing touchdowns, the most since the team racked up 15 in 2000, and Schwartz hopes to see continued improvement from Bush in the team s final two preseason games. Schwartz on Bush s performance against the Browns: Reggie played tough. Reggie played hard and made some plays for us. Again, offensively we didn t have any big plays or explosive plays. We dropped passes, couldn t move the ball, no touchdowns in the game. I mean there is no silver lining in a performance like that. OTHER PRESEASON NOS ¾ So far in the 2013 preseason (As of 8/17), Detroit ranks first in the League in rushing defense, allowing only 59.0 yards per game through two preseason games. ¾ The team also ranks fourth through two preseason games, allowing just a 2.7 yards per rushing attempt average. ¾ LB Ashlee Palmer leads the Lions defense in tackles this preseason with 10 (three solo), including two tackles for loss, and has recorded one sack (one yard). ¾ The Lions continued to see consistency from their special teams units against the Browns as Akers and rookie K Håvard Rugland both remained perfect on field goal attempts. Akers (48) and Rugland (33) each converted a field goal in the game, giving them both a 3-for-3 mark this preseason. ¾ On special teams, the Lions cover units rank seventh in kickoff return average allowed (22.2) and ninth in punt return average allowed (6.4). ¾ Lions QB Shaun Hill ranks 10th in preseason with a 94.9 passer rating.
