ON LOCALIZATION OF SCHRÖDINGER MEANS PER SJÖLIN Abstract. Localization properties for Schrödinger means are studied in dimension higher than one. arxiv: v [math.ca] 4 Apr 207. Introduction Let f belong to the Schwartz class SpR n q wheren ě. We define the Fourier transform pf by setting pfpξq e iξ x fpxqdx, ξ P R n. R n For f P SpR n q we also set (.) S t fpxq e iξ x e it ξ 2 fpξqdξ, p x P R n, t P R. R n If we set upx,tq S t fpxq{p2πq n, then upx,0q fpxq u satisfies the Schrödinger equation ibu{bt u. It is well-known that e i ξ 2 has the Fourier transform Kpxq ce i x 2 {4, where c denotes a constant, e it ξ 2 has the Fourier transform K t pxq x t n{2k t {2, x P R n, t ą 0. One has S t fpxq K t fpxq for f P SpR n q t ą 0, we set (.2) S t fpxq K t fpxq, t ą 0, for f P L pr n q. For f P L 2 pr n q we define S t f by formula (.). We introduce Sobolev spaces H s H s pr n q by setting H s tf P S : f Hs ă 8u, s P R, where ˆ {2 f Hs p ` ξ 2 q s fpξq p 2 dξ R n In the case n it is well-known (see Carleson [3] Dahlberg Kenig [4]) that lim 2π S tfpxq fpxq almost everywhere if f P H {4. Also it is known that H {4 cannot be replaced by H s if s ă {4. In the case n ě 2 Sjölin [6] Vega [9] proved independently that lim p2πq ns tfpxq fpxq almost everywhere if f P H s s ą {2. This result was improved by Bourgain [], who proved that f P H s pr n q, s ą {2 {4n, is sufficient for convergence almost everywhere. Mathematics Subject Classification (200): 42B99 Key words phrases. Schrödinger equation, localization, Sobolev spaces.
2 PER SJÖLIN In the case n 2, Du, Guth, Li [5] have recently proved that the condition s ą {3 is sufficient. On the other h Bourgain [2] has proved that s ě n{2pn `q is necessary for convergence for all n ě 2. We shall here study localization of Schrödinger means shall first state a result on localization everywhere (see Sjölin [7]). Theorem A. Assume n ě. If f P H n{2 pr n q f has compact support then for every x P R n zpsuppfq. lim S tfpxq 0 It is also proved in [7] that this resultis sharp in the sensethat H n{2 cannot bereplaced by H s with s ă n{2. We say that one has localization almost everywhere for functions in H s if for every f P H s one has lim S tfpxq 0 almost everywhere in R n zpsuppfq. Inthecasen SjölinSoriaprovedthatthereisnolocalization almosteverywhere for functions in H s if s ă {4 (see Sjölin [8]). In fact they proved that there exist two disjoint compact intervals I J in R a function f which belongs to H s for every s ă {4, with the properties that suppf Ă I for every x P J one does not have lim S tfpxq 0. In the case n ě 2 Sjölin Soria also proved that one does not have localization almost everywhere for functions in H s pr n q if s ă {4. We shall here improve this result prove that there is no localization almost everywhere for functions in H s pr n q if n ě 2 s ă n{2pn ` q. In fact we shall prove the following theorem. Theorem.. If n ě 2 s ă n{2pn `q there exist a function f in H s pr n q XL pr n q a set F with positive Lebesgue measure such that F Ă R n zpsuppfq for every x P F one does not have lim S t fpxq 0. To prove this result we shall combine the method in [8] with an estimate of Bourgain [2]. If A B are numbers we write A À B if there is a positive constant C such that A ď CB. If A À B B À A we write A B. We introduce the inverse Fourier transform by setting qfpxq p2πq n R n e iξ x fpξqdξ, x P R n, for f P L pr n q. Also Bpx;rq denotes a ball with center x radius r. 2. Proof of the theorem We start by taking v such that 0 ă v ă set v k ε k v µ k for k 2,3,4,..., where ε k 2 k µ maxpn,2 `n{4q. Then one has v k ă 2 k for k ě 2 pv k q 8 is a decreasing sequence tending to zero. We then choose g P SpRq such that supp qg Ă p,q, qgpx q for x ă {2, set f v px q e ix {v 2 qgpx {vq, 0 ă v ă, x P R.
ON LOCALIZATION OF SCHRÖDINGER MEANS 3 The functions f v were used in Sjölin [8] to study the localization problem in the case n. Also let Φ P SpR n q have suppφ p Ă Bp0;q Φp0q. We then take R {v 2 set nź G v px q R pn q{4 Φpx q e idl jx j, 0 ă v ă, j 2 R{2Dăl j ăr{d where x px 2,...,x n q P R n, l pl 2,...,l n q P Z n, D R pn`2q{2pn`q. We may also assume that Φpx q ψpx 2 q...ψpx n q for some ψ P SpRq. We then set h v pxq h v px,x q f v px qg v px q, 0 ă v ă. In [2] Bourgain studies functions similar to h v. However, in [2] our function qg is replaced by a function ϕ with the property that pϕ has compact support. In our argument it will be important that qg has compact support so that suppf v Ă p v,vq. We then observe that S t h v px,x q S t f v px qs t G v px q. It is proved in Bourgain [2], p.394, that if one assumes x ă c t ă c{r sets (2.) t x 2R `τ with τ ă R 3{2 {0, then (2.2) S t f v px q Á qgpr {2 x 2tR 3{2 q qgp2τr 3{2 q ě c 0. We then take v v k for k,2,3,..., apply an estimate in [2], p.395, namely that there exists a set E k Ă Bp0;q such that for every x P E k there exists t t k pxq such that ź n S tk pxqg vk px q Á R pn q{4 e idljxj e id2l2t j ě c 0. j 2 l j Also one has me k ě c ą 0, where m denotes Lebesgue measure. We then choose δ ą 0 so small that if F k E k X tx; x ą δ{2u then one has mf k ě c {2 c 2 for k,2,3,.... We may assume that δ ă. Ş We then set F 8 8Ť F j so that F is the set of all x which belong to infinitely k j k Ť many F k. Since the sets 8 F j decrease as k increases, one obtains mf ě c 0. j k It also follows from (2.2) that S tk pxqf vk pxq ě c 0 for x P F k. From (2.) one also concludes that (2.3) t k pxq R k v 2 k where R k {vk 2. We now choose K so large that v K ă δ{4 set hpxq h vk pxq f vk px qg vk px q. k K k K One has F Ă R n zpsupphq since supph Ă tx; x ă δ{4u. If x px,x q P F there exists a sequence pk j q 8 j such that x P F k j S tkj pxqg vkj px q ě c 0 S tkj pxqf vkj px q ě c 0.
4 PER SJÖLIN We shall prove that S tkj pxqhpxq ě c 0 for j large, also that h P H s XL for s ă n{2pn `q. It follows that one does not have localization almost everywhere in H s if s ă n{2pn `q. We shall first estimate h v Hs. We begin by studying f v G v. According to Sjölin [8], p. 43, one has for ξ ě AR we have pf v pξ q vgpvξ `{vq R {2 gpr {2 ξ `R {2 q R {2 ξ ě R {2 A, where A is a large constant. It follows that ξ ě AR implies Hence R {2 ξ `R {2 ě BR {2 ξ ξ ě ξ {2 A R {2. R {2 ξ `R {2 ě B ξ {2 p f v pξ q ď C ξ N for ξ ě AR, where N is large. It follows that (2.4) f p v pξ q 2 p `ξq 2 s dξ ď CR N it is also easy to see that ξ ěar (2.5) f v 2 v {2. We have pg v pξ q R pn q{4 l pφpξ Dlq it follows that supp p G v Ă tξ ; ξ Ru p G v pξ q 2 R pn q{2 l p Φpξ Dlq 2. Integrating we obtain p G v 2 2 R pn q{2 l n ˆR Φ p 2 2 R pn q{2. D We have D R pn`2q{2pn`q R{D R n{2pn`q hence G v 2 2 R pn q{2 R npn q{2pn`q R pn q{2pn`q (2.6) G v 2 R pn q{4pn`q.
ON LOCALIZATION OF SCHRÖDINGER MEANS 5 For s ą 0 one obtains h v 2 H s p h v pξq 2 ξ 2s dξ p f v pξ q 2 p G v pξ q 2 ξ 2s dξ À ij ξ R p f v pξ q 2 p G v pξ q 2 R 2s dξ dξ ` ij p f v pξ q 2 p G v pξ q 2 ξ 2s dξ dξ I `I 2. ξ R ξ ďar It follows that I À R 2s ξ ďar ξ R ξ ěar p f v pξ q 2 dξ ˆ p G v pξ q dξ À From (2.4) (2.6) one also obtains hence It follows that R 2s f v 2 2 G v 2 2 À R 2s R {2 R pn q{2pn`q R 2s n{pn`q. I 2 À R N I `I 2 À R 2s n{pn`q. h v Hs À R s n{2pn`q v 2pn{2pn`q sq. Since v k ă ε k h k Hs ď h vk Hs À v 2pn{2pn`q sq k ă 8, K it follows that h P H s if s ă n{2pn `q. We also need some estimates for S t f v S t G v. In Sjölin [8] (see Lemmas 3 4) it is proved that (2.7) S t f v px q À v t {2 (2.8) S t f v px q À t v 4 for 0 ă v ă δ{4, x ě δ{2, 0 ă t ă. Actually it is assumed in [8] that t ą 0 but the same proofs work for t ă 0. We also have the following estimates for S t G v. Lemma 2.. For 0 ă v ă δ{4, 0 ă t ă, x P R n one has (2.9) S t G v px q À v pn q{2 n plog{vq t pn q{2 (2.0) S t G v px q À v pn q2 {2pn`q. Proof. Choose the integer p so that 4p R{D ď 4. Then one has R{2DălăR{D e idlx j K 4p 2p e idlxj `Opq
6 PER SJÖLIN 4p e idlx j 2p p e idpl`3pqx j p p e ildx j p D ppdx j q, where D p denotes the Dirichlet kernel. Setting y Dx j one obtains a`{d a D p pdx j q dx j for every a P R. It follows that a` a Da` Da D p pyq dy D À D logp D logr D p pdx j q dx j À logr for every a P R. Letting Q denote the cube r0,s n we obtain G v G v px q dx G v px q dx À R n mpz n m`q R pn q{4 nź ` m m N j 2 m`q m j` nź ` m N hence We have where it follows that R pn q{4 m j 2 m j l j e iljdxj l j e iljdxj dx À dx j À R pn q{4 m G v À R pn q{4 plogrq n v pn q{2 plog{vq n. S t G v px q K t px y qg v py qdy K t py q À t pn q{2 S t G v px q À t pn q{2 G v hence we obtain (2.9). We also have S t G v px iξ q x e it ξ 2 Gv p pξ qdξ R pn q{4 l we get R n e S t G v px q À R pn q{4 l R n e ` m N plogrqn iξ x e it ξ 2 p Φpξ Dlqdξ p Φ À R pn q{4 pr{dq n R pn q2 {4pn`q v pn q2 {2pn`q the proof of Lemma 2. is complete.
Multiplying (2.7) (2.9) one obtains ON LOCALIZATION OF SCHRÖDINGER MEANS 7 (2.) S t h v pxq À v pn`q{2 plog{vq n t n{2 À v t n{2 combining (2.8) (2.0) one gets t (2.2) S t h v pxq À v 4`pn q2 {2pn`q À t t v4`n{2 v β where γ n{2, β 4 `n{2, 0 ă v ă δ{4, 0 ă t ă, x ą δ{2. We remark that it also follows from the above estimates that h P L pr n q. In fact it is easy to see that f v v we have proved that hence h v À v 5{4. It follows that G v À v pn q{2 plog{vq n À v {4 h ď h vk ă 8. We shall now finish the proof of the following result. Theorem 2.2. For x P F one has K S tkj pxqhpxq ě c 0 ą 0 for j large. It follows that there is no localization almost everywhere of Schrödinger means for functions in H s pr n q if s ă n{2pn `q. Proof. We have v t γ S tkj pxqhpxq ě S tkj pxqh vkj pxq S tkj pxqh vi pxq i k j. The first term on the right h side is larger than a positive number c 0 it suffices to prove that the second term is small. For simplicity we write k instead of k j in the following formulas. We have 0 ă v i ď v i {2 0 ă v i ď 2 i it follows that (2.3) v i ď 2v k` one also has (2.4) i k` k i K v β i À v β k since {v i ď {2v i implies {v β i ď. 2 β v β i For i ě k ` the inequality (2.) the formula (2.3) give invoking (2.3) we obtain i k` S tk pxqh vi pxq À v i pv 2 k qγ v i v 2γ k S tk pxqh vi pxq À v k` v 2γ k À ε k`,
8 PER SJÖLIN since µ ě 2γ v k` ε k` v µ k ď ε k`v 2γ k. For K ď i ď k the inequality (2.2) gives invoking (2.4) one obtains (2.5) k i K S tk pxqh vi pxq À t kpxq v β i S tk pxqh vi pxq À v 2 k k K v β i À v2 k v β i Since µ ě β{2 we get v k ď ε k v β{2 k v2 k ď ε2 k vβ k. Hence the sum in (2.5) is majorized by Cε 2 k. Since ε k Ñ 0 as k Ñ 8 the proof of the theorem is complete. À v2 k v β k. References [] J.
