A QUANTITATIVE WEIGHTED WEAK-TYPE ESTIMATE FOR CALDERÓN-ZYGMUND OPERATORS CODY B. STOCKDALE arxiv:82.392v [math.ca] 29 Dec 208 Abstract. The purpose of this article is to provide an alternative proof of a weighted weak-type (, ) estimate for Calderón-Zygmund operators. Ombrosi, Pérez, and Recchi previously gave a proof of this result using the Calderón-Zygmund decomposition. The proof given here is motivated by the proof of the weak-type (, ) estimate for Calderón- Zygmund operators in the nonhomogeneous setting by Nazarov, Treil, and Volberg. A simplification of this proof in the unweighted setting on is also given. Keywords: singular integrals; weighted inequalities; weak-type estimates.. Introduction Let M denote the usual Hardy-Littlewood maximal function; recall that Mf(x) := sup f(y)dy. r>0 B(x, r) B(x,r) A main goal is to understand the boundedness properties of M on various Lebesgue spaces. It is a key result by Muckenhoupt [8] that, for p <, M is bounded from L p (w) to L p (w) (from L (w) to L, (w) when p = ) if and only if w is an weight; that is, w is locally integrable, positive almost everywhere, and satisfies the condition ( ) ( p [w] Ap := sup w(x)dx w(x) dx) p < ; Q Q Q ( when p =, the quantity Q Q Q p dx) Q w(x) p is interpreted as (infq w). We also define A :=, p< and ( ) ( ) [w] A := sup w(x)dx exp log(w(x)) dx. Q Q Q Q Q Similar theorems also hold when the Maximal function is replaced with a Calderón- Zygmund operator: if < p < and w, then a Calderón-Zygmund operator T is bounded from L p (w) to L p (w). The original proof uses a good-λ estimate involving the maximal function, see [4, 2]. A different proof came about due to an idea of Sawyer [] using the Jones factorization of weights [6]. Since w if and only if w = uv p where u, v A, the boundedness T : L p (w) L p (w) is equivalent to the boundedness of T ( v)v : L p (uv) L p (uv). Using Stein-Weiss interpolation [3], this reduces to showing the following weak-type inequality: T (fv)v L, (uv) f L (uv)
2 CODY B. STOCKDALE for all f L (uv). This estimate was obtained by Cruz-Uribe, Martell, and Pérez [3] where the following theorem was proved. Theorem. If u A and either v A or v A (u), then T (fv)v L, (uv) f L (uv) for all f L (uv). The proof uses an extrapolation result for A weights and reduces to an identical inequality with T replaced by the dyadic maximal function. More recently, Li, Ombrosi, and Pérez proved the same estimate with the weaker hypotheses u A and v A [7]. Caldarelli and Rivera-Ríos gave a quantitative estimate under the conditions u A and v (u), < p <, using sparse domination []. The idea of Sawyer closely parallels the theory in the unweighted setting. Using interpolation and a duality argument, the boundedness of a Calderón-Zygmund operator T : L p ( ) L p ( ) for < p < reduces to proving the following theorem. Theorem 2. If f L ( ), then T f L, ( ) f L ( ). Theorem 2 was originally proved by applying the Calderón-Zygmund decomposition to write f = g + b where g and b satisfy certain properties, and bounding T g L, ( ) f L ( ) and T b L, ( ) f L ( ), [2]. See also [4, 2]. It is of interest to determine how close the Calderón-Zygmund decomposition technique gets one to proving Theorem. In [0], it is observed that this weak-type estimate can be proved using the Calderón-Zygmund decomposition when u =. In this case, they determine the dependence on [v] Ap with the following theorem. Theorem 3. If p <, v, and f L (v), then T (fv)v L, (v) [v] Ap max{p, log(e + [v] Ap )} f L (v). Their proof uses the Calderón-Zygmund decomposition of f with respect to the measure vdx. The difficulty lies in controlling T (gv)v L, ( ). Hytönen s solution of the A 2 conjecture, [5], is used to handle this term. Theorem 4. If < p < and w, then T is bounded from L p (w) to L p (w) and T L p (w) L p (w) pp [w] max{, p }. The goal of this paper is to describe an alternative proof of Theorem 2 and its extension which proves Theorem 3. The proof given here is modeled after the proof of the weak-type (, ) estimate in the nonhomogeneous setting by Nazarov, Treil, and Volberg [9]. A measure µ has the doubling property if there exists C > 0 so that µ(b(x, 2r)) Cµ(B(x, r)) for all r > 0 and x in the space. A space of nonhomogeneous type is a space whose underlying measure fails to possess the doubling property, but instead satisfies a polynomial growth condition. The proof in [9] avoids the Calderón-Zygmund decomposition, opting instead to first prove a weak-type estimate on finite linear combinations of point mass measures. The estimate on point mass measures uses a Guy-David type lemma and the Stein-Weiss duality trick
A WEIGHTED ESTIMATE FOR CALDERÓN-ZYGMUND OPERATORS 3 involving the adjoint of T. However, if one allows the doubling property, the Nazarov, Treil, Volberg proof technique simplifies significantly the weak-type estimate on point mass measures, the Guy-David lemma, and the Stein-Weiss duality trick are no longer needed. Instead, one can use the doubling property to inflate the exceptional set. This provides extra separation that allows for the use of cancellation. Since the proof still involves decomposing an L ( ) function into two summands ( good and bad functions), there is an analogy to be made between this proof and the Calderón- Zygmund decomposition proof. First, the terms with the operator applied to the good functions are handled identically both proofs use Chebyshev s inequality, the boundedness of T : L q (w q ) L q (w q ) for a choice of q (, ), and the L ( ) norms of the good functions to obtain the appropriate estimate. The terms involving the bad functions are treated differently. Using the Calderón-Zygmund decomposition, the bad function, b, can be written as the sum b i where each b i has mean value zero, is supported on a cube of appropriate measure, and has useful L ( ) control. The cancellation involved in the b i allows one to introduce a term with the kernel evaluated at the center of the cube on which b i is supported, then one can use the smoothness assumption of the kernel to obtain the desired estimate. The disjointness of supp(b i ) over i allows one to recover the estimate for the original term. Without the Calderón-Zygmund decomposition, there is no immediate cancellation that may be exploited in the bad function. Instead, we apply a Whitney decomposition to write the support of the bad function, b, as a union of dyadic cubes with disjoint interiors and restrict b to each cube given by the Whitney decomposition. Call these restrictions b i. It suffices to approximate b N b i and get an appropriate estimate with this sum, uniform in N. To introduce cancellation in the b i, we construct a set with the same center as supp(b i ) and with appropriate measure. Adding and subtracting characteristic functions of these sets from b i introduces cancellation that will allow for the use of the smoothness assumption of the kernel. The final term will be controlled since the sets were constructed with appropriate measure. Section 2 describes the notation and setting, as well as a lemma that will be used in the proof of the main result. Section 3 includes the new proof of the weak-type (, ) estimate for Calderón-Zygmund operators in the unweighted setting. Section 4 contains the new proof of the quantitative weak-type estimate with weights. I would like to thank Brett Wick for for his comments leading to the completion of this article. 2. Preliminaries Throughout the paper we will use the notation A B if there exists C > 0, possibly depending on n or T, so that A CB. The Lebesgue measure of A is represented by A. For a weight w, the quantity w(x)dx is represented by w(a). The cube with center A x and side length r is denoted Q(x, r). If Q is a cube, then rq denotes the cube with the same center as Q and side length equal to r times the side length of Q. We say K : C is a Calderón-Zygmund kernel if there exists δ > 0 such that the following conditions hold: () (size) K(x, y) x y n
4 CODY B. Lemma. If f : C is such that supp(f) Q(x, r) and f(y)dy = 0, then Q(x,r) T f(y) dy f L ( ). \Q(x,2 nr) Proof. First, notice that since f(y)dy = 0 and supp(f) Q(x, r), Q(x,r) T f(y) = K(y, z)f(z)dz = (K(y, z) K(y, x))f(z)dz. Q(x,r) Q(x,r) Therefore, using the Fubini theorem and the smoothness estimate of K, we see T f(y) dy K(y, z) K(y, x) f(z) dzdy \Q(x,2 nr) = \Q(x,2 nr) Q(x,r) f(z) f(z) Q(x,r) \Q(x,2 nr) Q(x,r) d(x,y) 2d(x,z) f L ( ). If f L ( ), then T f L, ( ) f L ( ).
A WEIGHTED ESTIMATE FOR CALDERÓN-ZYGMUND OPERATORS 5 Proof of Theorem 2. Let t > 0 be given. We wish to show { T f > t} t f L ( ). By density, we may assume f is a continuous function with compact support. Set Apply a Whitney decomposition to write a disjoint union of dyadic cubes where Put Then and G := { f > t}. G = Q i, 2 nl(q i ) d(q i, \ G). g := f \G, b := f G, and b i := f Qi. f = g + b = g + b i, { { T f > t} T g > 2} t { + T b > 2} t = I + II. To control I, use the Chebyshev inequality, the boundedness of T : L 2 ( ) L 2 ( ), and the fact that g L ( ) t to estimate I t 2 T g(x) 2 dx t 2 g(x) 2 dx t g(x) dx t f L ( ). To control II, we will estimate II N := { T (b N ) > t 2}, where bn := N. Let c i denote the center of Q i and let a i := Q i b i (x)dx. Set N b i, uniformly in E := Q(c, r ) where r > 0 is chosen so that E = a. In general, for i = 2,..., N, set t E i := Q(c i, r i ) \ i E k k=
6 CODY B. STOCKDALE where r i > 0 is chosen so that E i = a i t. Note that such E i exist since the function r Q(x, r) is continuous for each x. Define and, for general i = 2,..., N, set Set E := Q(c, 2 nr ), E i := Q(c i, 2 nr i ) \ i k= E k. N N E := E i and E := Ei. Let j, j 2,..., j l N be the indices where a ji 0 and k, k 2,..., k N l N be the indices where a ki < 0. Set l N l E + := E ji and E := E ki. Define Then σ := T ( E + E ). { II N E G + \ (E G) : T (b N ) tσ > 4} t { + σ > 4} = II N + II N 2 + II N 3. We first control II N. Use the doubling property of Lebesgue measure and the Chebyshev inequality to estimate N II N G + Ei G + N E i t f L ( ) + t t f L ( ) N b i L ( ) For II N 2, use the Chebyshev inequality, and Lemma, which applies since supp(b ji t Eji ) Q ji Q(c ji, r ji ), b ji (x) t Eji (x)dx = 0, and and similarly since 2 nq ji Q(c ji, 2 nr ji ) = 2 nq ji E j i E G; supp(b ki + t Eki ) Q ki Q(c ki, r ki ), b ki (x) + t Eki (x)dx = 0, and 2 nq ki Q(c ki, 2 nr ki ) = 2 nq ki E k i E G,

Use the Chebyshev inequality, the boundedness of T : L 2 ( ) L 2 ( ), and the fact that E t f L ( ) to estimate II N 3 T ( E + E )(x) 2 dx R n E +(x) E (x) 2 dx R n = E (x)dx t f L ( ). Putting the estimates for I, II N, II N 2, and II N 3 together, we get ( ) {T f > t} I + sup II N + II N 2 + II N 3 N N t f L (w). This completes the proof. 4. Weighted Estimate We now prove the following weighted inequality. This is an adaptation of the proof given in Section 3, based on [9]. Theorem 2. If p <, v, and f L (v), then T (fv)v L, (v) [v] Ap max{p, log(e + [v] Ap )} f L (v). Proof of Theorem 2. Let t > 0 be given. We wish to show v({ T (fv) v > t}) [v] Ap max{p, log(e + [v] Ap )}t f L (v). Assume that v(x)dx > t f L (v) (otherwise there is nothing to prove). By density, we may assume f is a continuous function with compact support. Set G := { f > t}.
8 CODY B. STOCKDALE Apply a Whitney decomposition to write a disjoint union of dyadic cubes where Put Then and G = Q i, 2 nl(q i ) d(q i, \ G). g := f \G, b := f G, and b i := f Qi. f = g + b = g + b i, ({ v({ T (fv) v > t}) v T (gv) v > t }) ({ + v T (bv) v > t }) 2 2 = I + II. To control I, let r > p be a constant to be chosen later (we will actually choose r so that r > 2 as well). Then v A r, [v] Ar [v] Ap, v r A r, and [ ] v r = [v] r A r A r. Use the Chebyshev inequality, Theorem 4, the fact that g L ( ) t, and the facts listed above to estimate I 2 r t r T (gv)(x) r v(x) r dx [ (rr v r ] ) r max{, r } t r g(x) r v(x)dx A r r r [v] r A r t g(x) v(x)dx r r [v] r t f L (v). We need to address the factors r r and [v] r. First consider r r. Let h(x) = ( + x x)+ x. Note that h() = 4 and that h (x) = ( + x) + x 3 x log( + x) 0 for all x [, ). Thus h(x) 4 for all x [, ). In particular, letting and computing we have Thus r = + max{p, log(e + [v] Ap )} > 2 r = + max{p, log(e + [v] Ap )} < 2, r r max{p, log(e + [v] Ap )} = h(max{p, log(e + [v] )}) 4. r r 4 max{p, log(e + [v] Ap )}.
Now consider [v] r ( k (x) = x log(e+x) A WEIGHTED ESTIMATE FOR CALDERÓN-ZYGMUND OPERATORS 9. x log(e+x) x [, ). In particular, [v] r Set k(x) = x = [v] log(e+x). Notice that k() =, lim x k(x) = e, and log(x) (e+x)(log(e+x)) 2 ) 0 for all x [, ). Thus k(x) e for all max{p,log(e+[v] Ap )} Thus [v] r e[v] Ap. Substituting this into the previous estimate yields I r r [v] r t f L (v) log(e+[v] Ap ) [v] = k([v] Ap ) e. [v] Ap max{p, log(e + [v] Ap )}t f L (v). To control II, we will estimate II N := v ({ T (b N v) v > t 2}), where bn := N b i, uniformly in N. Let c i denote the center of Q i and let a i := Q i b i (x)v(x)dx. Set E := Q(c, r ) where r > 0 is chosen so that v(e ) = a. In general, for i = 2,..., N, set t E i := Q(c i, r i ) \ i k= E k where r i > 0 is chosen so that v(e i ) = a i. Note that such E t i exist since the function r v(q(x, r)) increases to v(x)dx (or to if v is not integrable) as r, approaches 0 as r 0, and is continuous from the right for almost every x. Also define and, for general i = 2,..., N, set Set E := Q(c, 2 nr ), E i := Q(c i, 2 nr i ) \ i k= E k. N N E := E i and E := Ei. Let j, j 2,..., j l N be the indices where Q ji b ji (x)v(x)dx 0 and k, k 2,..., k N l N be the indices where Q ki b ki (x)v(x)dx < 0. Set Define E + := l E ji and E := σ := T (v( E + E )). N l E ki.
