As the 12th seed, Georgia opens the SEC Tournament against the fifth seed in 13th-ranked Miss. State (34-22, 17-13). The Bulldogs finished sixth in the Eastern Division while MSU was third in the Western Division. Georgia claimed the regular season series over then sixth-ranked MSU 2-1 in Athens two weeks ago. In SEC Tournament meetings, the Bulldogs are 4-8 against MSU with the last matchup in 2014, a 5-4 MSU victory in 10 innings. Dawg Tracks *Georgia is overall and in the SEC and enters the SEC Tournament having won its last three SEC series, all over ranked teams including two on the road. Georgia s run to qualify for the tournament in this span featured series wins at No. 4 Kentucky, versus No. 6 Miss. State in Athens and at No. 30 South Carolina, going 6-3 in this stretch. The 2001 season marked the last time Georgia had posted three consecutive SEC series wins over ranked teams, that year they came over #23 Florida (2-1), #16 USC (2-1) and #14 Tennessee (3-0). *Sophomore C/DH Michael Curry ( ) is aiming to capture the team s Triple Crown, leading the squad in home runs and RBI and third in batting. He has started all 56 games this year at either catcher or designated hitter. Also an excellent student, Curry has made the CoSIDA Academic All-District team as a Dean s List student majoring in Computer Science major. He is on the national ballot for Academic All-American. *Freshman SS Cam Shepherd ( ) ranks among the SEC leaders with 72 hits. He has started all 56 games at shortstop and leads the team with 20 multi-hit games. He has 16 doubles including 12 in SEC action where he is batting Freshman RF Tucker Bradley ( ) leads the team in batting and has the highest SEC batting average for the Bulldogs at.349, which ranks eighth in the SEC. *Junior RHP Chase Adkins (6-6, 3.79 ERA) will start Tuesday. After Georgia clinched its spot in the SEC Tournament with a road win over No. 30 USC Thursday, Adkins did not start during that series but instead made a planned brief relief appearance, his first of the year, on Friday (1.1 IP, 1H, 0R, 1K) to get ready for the SEC Tournament opener. In the MSU series, he started game three on his 22nd birthday and provided six shutout innings in a 4-1 series-clinching victory. *Senior LHP Andrew Gist (3-4, 3.80 ERA) matched his career high of eight innings pitched with an outstanding series opening road win over No. 30 South Carolina Thursday. He carried a shutout to the seventh and ended up allowing just one run on three hits with a walk and five strikeouts in leading the Bulldogs to a 6-3 win. It clinched Georgia s spot in the SEC Tournament. *In his last three SEC starts, all against ranked opponents, sophomore LHP Kevin Smith is 3-0 with a 1.89 ERA, beating No. 4 Kentucky in Lexington, No. 6 Miss. State in Athens, and No. 30 USC in Columbia. For the year, Smith is 5-5 with a 5.03 ERA and two saves in 19 appearances including 12 starts. He would be available in relief Tuesday as Georgia must win to extend its season. Like Adkins, he faced No. 6 MSU on his birthday (turning 20) and notched a win. Georgia claimed game two 4-1 with Smith firing seven shutout innings with six strikeouts. *For the season, Georgia is batting.259 with an ERA of 5.04 and a fielding percentage of.961. Normally, the lineup features at least five freshmen with shortstop Cam Shepherd leading the way. He s started all 56 games while freshmen outfielders Tucker Maxwell (51 starts), Tucker Bradley (40 starts) and catcher Austin Biggar (43 starts) have been regulars. Freshman third baseman Aaron Schunk started 37 games at third base before a broken thumb sidelined him. Also, there s freshman second baseman Will Proctor who has made 38 starts. On the mound, Georgia has employed freshman RHP Zac Kristofak in a variety of roles, and he ranks among the SEC leaders in appearances with 25. Also, freshman RHP Tony Locey has made 16 appearances including eight starts. The 2017 pitching staff features 10 newcomers including seven freshmen. It took time for the 2017 squad to figure it out like adjusting to life in the grind of the SEC and how to win close games. As the season rolled along, Georgia has played better defense, established the rotation and relief roles while getting more timely hitting. Like most teams, Georgia has had to deal with its share of injuries along the way, more on that below. Banged-Up Bulldogs Georgia s infield depth took a hit in April when two more Bulldogs were lost to season-ending injuries. Freshman Aaron Schunk ( ), who had started 37 games at third base, broke his left thumb against Clemson on April 19 while junior utility infielder Trey Logan ( ) broke his left collarbone against Vanderbilt April 22. With Schunk out, junior Mitchell Webb has taken over a third. There s an outside chance that Schunk could see action on the mound at the SEC Tournament. He has made one relief appearance this season. Georgia lost projected starting first baseman sophomore Patrick Sullivan before the season due to an illness, and he is redshirting. Sophomore Adam Sasser has seen a majority of action at first with sophomore LJ Talley, junior Keegan McGovern and junior Mitchell Webb making starts there too. Also, junior OF Will Campbell ( ), who has made 29 starts, has missed the last 23 games due to a sore back. With Campbell out, freshman Tucker Bradley has assumed the starting RF spot. On the mound, junior closer Blake Cairnes (1-1, 3.72 ERA, 4 SV) missed the Florida, Kentucky and MSU series due to tricep tendonitis while sophomore RHP reliever Shane Tucker (1-0, 4.76 ERA) has been out since mid-april due to a forearm strain. While Cairnes was out, Georgia used a closer by committee approach with freshman Zac Kristofak, sophomore Kevin Smith, redshirt junior Drew Moody and freshman Justin Glover all earning saves. SEC Tournaments Under Coach Stricklin Georgia will be making its third appearance in the SEC Tournament under Coach Stricklin who is in his fourth year at the helm. Georgia is 0-2, falling to then #16 Miss. State in 2014 (5-4 in 10 innings) and then 5-1 to #10 Ole Miss last year. No Georgia players who saw action in the 2014 SEC Tournament game are on the 2017 roster. A total of five current players did play in the 2016 SEC Tournament including four who made starts (Michael Curry-C, Keegan McGovern-LF, LJ Talley-2B and Mitchell Webb-3B. Pitcher Kevin Smith saw action in relief. Curry went 0-for-3 with a HBP, McGovern was 1-3 with a BB, Talley was 1-for-4 while Webb went 0-for-3. Smith s line in his outing was 0.2 IP, 2H, 1R, 1 ER, 2BB, 0K. This will be Georgia s 23rd all-time appearance at an SEC Tournament, and the Bulldogs are SEC TOURNAMENT HISTORY FOR THE BULLDOGS 2017 SEC TOURNAMENT May 23-28, Hoover Metropolitan Stadium, Hoover, Ala. 6 SERIES RECAPS (Week 1) Georgia dropped its season-opening series to College of Charleston and avoided a sweep with a 9-8 thriller in game three. The Bulldogs entered the ninth leading 9-7 and sent freshman OF/LHP Tucker Bradley to the mound for his pitching debut after playing the first eight innings in centerfield. He issued back-to-back walks and then an RBI-double, and on the play, the Bulldogs threw out the potential tying run at the plate for the first out as the batter took third.
