rxiv: v1 [mth.gm] 5 My 01 A GEOMETRIC WAY TO GENERATE BLUNDON TYPE INEQUALITIES Dorin Andric, Ctlin Brbu nd Nicusor Minculete Abstrct We present geometric wy to generte Blundon type inequlities. Theorem 3.1 gives the formul for cos POQ in terms of the brycentric coordintes of the points P nd Q with respect to given tringle. This formul implies Blundon type inequlities generted by the points P nd Q (Theorem 3.). Some pplictions re given in the lst section by choosing specil points P nd Q. 000 Mthemtics Subject Clssifiction: 6D05; 6D15; 51N35. Key words: Blundon s inequlities; dul Blundon s inequlities; brycentric coordintes. 1 Introduction Consider O the circumcenter, I the incenter, G the centroid, N the Ngel point, s the semiperimeter, R the circumrdius, nd r the inrdius of tringle ABC. Blundon s inequlities express the necessry nd sufficient conditions for the existence of tringle with elements s, R nd r: R + 10Rr r (R r) R Rr s R + 10Rr r + (R r) R Rr. (1) Clerly these two inequlities cn be written in the following equivlent form s R 10Rr+r (R r) R Rr, () nd in mny references this reltion is clled the fundmentl inequlity of tringle ABC. The stndrd proof is n lgebric one, it ws first time given by W.J.Blundon [5] nd it is bsed on the chrcteriztion of cubic equtions with the roots the length sides of tringle. For more detils we refer to the monogrph of D. Mitrinović, J. Pečrić, V. Volenec [16], nd to the ppers of C.Niculescu [17],[18]. R.A.Stnoinu [0], nd S.Wu [] hve obtined some improvements of this importnt inequlity. 1
The following result ws obtined by D.Andric nd C.Brbu in the pper [3] nd it contins simple geometric proof of (1). Assume tht the tringle ABC is not equilterl. The following reltion holds : cos ION R + 10Rr r s (R r) R Rr. (3) If we hve R r, then the tringle must be equilterl nd we hve equlity in (1) nd (). If we ssume tht R r 0, then inequlities (1) re direct consequences of the fct tht 1 cos ION 1. In this geometric rgument the min ide is to consider the points O, I nd N, nd then to get the formul (3). It is nturl question to see wht is similr formul when we kip the circumcenter O nd we replce the points I nd N by other two points P nd Q. In this wy we obtin Blundon type inequlities generted by the points P nd Q. Section contins the bsic fcts bout the min ingredient helping us to do ll the computtions, tht is the brycentric coordintes. In Section 3 we present the nlogous formul to (3), for the tringle POQ, nd the we derive the Blundon type inequlities generted in this wy. The lst section contins some pplictions of the results in Section 3 s follows: the clssicl Blundon s inequlities, the dul Blundon s inequlities obtined in the pper [3], the Blundon s inequlities generted by two Cevin points of rnk (k; l; m). Some bsic results bout brycentric coordintes Let P be point situted in the plne of the tringle ABC. The Cevin tringle DEF is defined by the intersection of the Cevin lines though the point P nd the sides BC, CA, AB of tringle. If the point P hs brycentric coordintes t 1 : t : t 3, then the vertices of the Cevin tringle DEF hve brycentric coordintes given by: D(0 : t : t 3 ), E(t 1 : 0 : t 3 ) nd F(t 1 : t : 0). The brycentric coordintes were introduced in 187 by Möbius (see [10]). The using of brycentric coordintes defines distinct prt of Geometry clled Brycentric Geometry. More detils cn be found in the monogrphs of C. Brdley [10], C. Condă[11], C. Coşniţă [1], C. Kimberling [14], nd in the ppers of O. Bottem [9], J. Scott [1], nd P. Yiu [3]. It is well-known ([11],[1]) tht for every point M in the plne of tringle ABC, then the following reltion holds: (t 1 + t + t 3 ) MPt1 MA+t MB+t3 MC. (4) In the prticulr cse when M P, we obtin t 1 PA+t PB+t3 PC 0. This lst reltion shows tht the point P is the brycenter of the system{a, B, C} with the weights{t 1, t, t 3 }. The following well-known result is very useful in
computing distnces from the point M to the brycenter P of the system{a, B, C} with the weights{t 1, t, t 3 }. Theorem.1. If M is point situted in the plne of tringle ABC, then (t 1 +t +t 3 ) MP (t 1 MA +t MB +t 3 MC )(t 1 +t +t 3 ) (t t 3 +t 3 t 1 b +t 1 t c ), (5) where BC, bca, cab, re the length sides of tringle. Proof. Using the sclr product of two vectors, from (4) we obtin: (t 1 +t +t 3 ) MP t 1 MA +t MB +t 3 MC +t 1 t MA MB+t1 t 3MA MC+t t 3MB MC, tht is (t 1 + t + t 3 ) MP t 1 MA + t MB + t 3 MC + t 1 t (MA + MB AB )+t 1 t 3 (MA + MC AC )+t t 3 (MB + MC BC ), hence, (t 1 + t + t 3 ) MP (t 1 MA + t MB + t 3 MC )(t 1 + t + t 3 ) (t t 3 + t 3 t 1 b + t 1 t c ). To get the lst reltion we hve used the definition of the sclr product nd the Cosine Lw s follows MA MBMA MB cos ÂMBMA MB MA + MB AB MA +MB AB. MA MB If we consider tht t 1, t, t 3, nd t 1 + t + t 3 re nonzero rel numbers, then the reltion (5) becomes the Lgrnge s reltion MP t 1MA + t MB + t 3 MC t 1 t t 3 + b + c. (6) t 1 + t + t 3 (t 1 + t + t 3 ) t 1 t t 3 If we consider in (6) M O, the circumcenter of the tringle, then it follows R OP t 1 t t 3 + b + c. (7) (t 1 + t + t 3 ) t 1 t t 3 The following version of Cuchy-Schwrz inequlity is lso known in the literture s Bergström s inequlity (see [6], [7], [8], [19]): If x k, k R nd k > 0, k1,,, n, then with equlity if nd only if x x x n n (x 1+ x +...+x n ) n, x 1 1 x... x n n. 3
Using Bergström s inequlity nd reltion (4), we obtin R OP t 1 t t 3 (t 1 + t + t 3 ) (+b+c) t 1 + t + t 3, tht is in ny tringle with semiperimeter s the following inequlity holds: R OP 4s t 1 t t 3 (t 1 + t + t 3 ) 3, where t 1 : t : t 3 re the brycentric coordintes of P nd t 1, t, t 3 > 0. Equlity holds if n only if t 1, t b, t 3 c, tht is P I, the incenter of the tringle ABC. Theorem.. ([11], [1]). If the points P nd Q hve brycentric coordintes t 1 : t : t 3, nd u 1 : u : u 3, respectively, with respect to the tringle ABC, nd uu 1 + u + u 3, tt 1 + t + t 3, then ( PQ αβ where the numbers α, β, re defined by α + b β + c α u 1 u t 1 t ;β u u t t ; u 3 u t 3 t. ), (8) 3 Blundon type inequlities generted by two points Theorem 3.1. Let P nd Q be two points different from the circumcircle O, hving the brycentric coordintes t 1 : t : t 3 nd u 1 : u : u 3 with respect to the tringle ABC, nd let uu 1 + u + u 3, tt 1 + t + t 3. If t 1, t, t 3, u 1, u, u 3 0, then the following reltion holds cos POQ ( R t 1t t 3 t t 1 + b t + c t 3 u 1 u u 3 u u 1 + b u + c u 3 +αβ α + b β + ) c [R ] [ ] t 1t t 3 t t 1 + b t + c t R 3 u 1u u 3 u u 1 + b u + c u 3 where, b, c re the length sides of the tringle nd α u 1 u t 1 t ;β u u t t ; u 3 u t 3 t. (10) Proof. Applying the reltion (7) for the points P nd Q, we hve OP R t 1t t 3 + b + c t t 1 t t 3 (9) (11) nd OQ R u 1u u 3 u + b + c u 1 u u 3 (1) 4
We use the Lw of Cosines in the tringle POQ to obtin cos POQ OP + OQ PQ, (13) OP OQ nd from reltions (8), (11), (1) nd (13) we obtin the reltion (9). Theorem 3.. Let P nd Q be two points different from the circumcircle O, hving the brycentric coordintes t 1 : t : t 3 nd u 1 : u : u 3 with respect to the tringle ABC, nd let uu 1 + u + u 3, tt 1 + t + t 3. If t 1, t, t 3, u 1, u, u 3 0, then the following inequlities hold [ R t 1t t 3 t ] [ + b + c R t 1 t t u ] 1u u 3 + b + c 3 u u 1 u u 3 [ αβ α + b β + c + R t1 t t 3 + b + c t t 1 t t 3 [ R t 1t t 3 t + u 1u u 3 u ] + b + c u 1 u u 3 ] [ + b + c R t 1 t t u ] 1u u 3 + b + c 3 u u 1 u u 3 where, b, c re the length sides of the tringle nd the numbersα,β, re defined by (10). Proof. The inequlities (14) re simple direct consequences of the fct tht 1 cos POQ 1. The equlity in the right inequlity holds if nd only if POQ0, tht is the points O, P, Q re colliner in the order O, P, Q or O, Q, P. The equlity in the left inequlity holds if nd only if POQπ, tht is the points O, P, Q re colliner in the order P, O, Q or Q, O, P. From Theorem 3.1 it follows tht it is nturl nd importnt problem to construct the tringle ABC from the points O, P, Q, when we know their brycentric coordintes. In the specil cse when P I nd Q N we know tht tht points I, G, N re colliner, determining the Ngel line of tringle, nd the centroid G lies on the segment IN such tht IG 1 3IN. Then, using the Euler s line of the tringle, we get the orthocenter H on the ry (OG such tht OH3OG. In this cse the problem is reduced to the fmous Euler s determintion problem i.e. to construct tringle from its incenter I, circumcenter O, nd orthocenter H (see the pper of P.Yiu [4] for detils nd results). This is reson to cll the problem s the generl determintion problem. 4 Applictions The formul (3) nd the clssicl Blundon s inequlities (1) cn be obtined from (9) nd (14) by considering PI, the incenter, nd QN, the Ngel point of the tringle. Indeed, the brycentric coordintes of incenter I nd of Ngel s (14) 5
point N re (t 1, t, t 3 )(, b, c), nd (u 1, u, u 3 )(s, s b, s c), respectively. We hve uu 1 + u + u 3 s +s b+s cs, u 1 u u 3 (s )(s b)(s c)r s, (15) nd We obtin Therefore tht is α s s tt 1 + t + t 3 s, t 1 t t 3 bc4rrs. (16) s s 3 s,β s 3b s αβ α + b β + c β 3 s ( 1 3b s [ (+b+c) 3] + 9bc 4s bc s s, s 3c. (17) s ) ( 1 3c ) s (s r 8Rr)+3(s 3r 6Rr)+18Rr Now, using (16) nd (17) we get t 1 t t 3 + b + c t t 1 t t 3 nd r s u 1 u u 3 u αβ α + b β + c s 5r + 16Rr. (18) ( (s b)(s c) r s u 1 + b u + c u 3 ) r s s 1 s s s 1 s s 4Rrs 4s srr, (19) s + b s b + c s c [ (+b+c) 3] + bc 3 s + 8Rrs 1 s [ s (s 3r 6Rr) s (s r 8Rr)+8Rrs ] 4Rr 4r (0) Using the reltions (18)-(0) in (9) we obtin the reltion (3). These computtions re similr to those given by complex numbers in [1]. 6
Now, consider the excenters I, I b, I c, nd N, N b, N c the djoint points to the Ngel point N. For the definition nd some properties of the djoint points N, N b, N c we refer to the pper of D.Andric nd K.L.Nguyen []. Let s, R, r, r, r b, r c be the semiperimeter, circumrdius, inrdius, nd exrdii of tringle ABC, respectively. Considering the tringle I ON, D.Andric nd C.Brbu [3] hve proved the following formul cos I ON R 3Rr r α (R+r ) R + Rr, (1) whereα +b +c 4. Using formul (1),we get the dul form of Blundon s inequlities given in the pper [3] 0 + b + c 4 R 3Rr r + (R+r ) R + Rr. () There re similr inequlities involving the exrdii r b nd r c. We known tht the brycentric coordintes of the excenter I re (t 1, t, t 3 ) (, b, c), nd of the djoint Ngel point N re (u 1, u, u 3 )(s, c s, b s). Using formul (9) we cn obtin the reltion (1) nd then the dul form of the clssicl Blundon s inequlities (). We hve uu 1 + u + u 3 s, u 1 u u 3 s(s b)(s c) nd We obtin Therefore, tt 1 + t + t 3 (s ), t 1 t t 3 bc 4Rrs. t 1 t t 3 t α s+ (s ) 1+ 3 (s ), β c s b (s ) b s c (s ) + b + c t 1 t t b (s ), 3c (s ). 4Rrs 4(s ) (s ) Rr, (3) nd u 1 u u 3 + b + c u u 1 u u 3 ( s b s s c s + b s(s c)(s b) (s ) s s b s + c s b s c c s b s s c ) s s 7

In the pper [13], N. Minculete nd C. Brbu hve introduced the Cevins of rnk (k; l; m). The line AD is clled ex-cevin of rnk (k; l; m) or exterior Cevin of rnk (k; l; m), if the point D is situted on side (BC) of the non-isosceles tringle ABC nd the following reltion holds: BD c k DC b s c l s b m +b. +c In the pper [13] it is proved tht the Cevins of rnk (k; l; m) re concurrent in the point I(k, l, m) clled the Cevin point of rnk (k; l; m) nd the brycentric coordintes of I(k, l, m) re: k (s ) l (b+c) m : b k (s b) l (+c) m : c k (s c) l (+b) m. In the cse lm0, we obtin the Cevin point of rnk k. Let I 1, I be two Cevin points with brycentric coordintes: I i [ k i (s ) l i (b+c) m i : b k i (s b) l i (+c) m i : c k i (s c) l i (+b) m i ], i1,. Denote t 1 i k i (s ) l i (b+c) m i, t i b k i (s b) l i (+c) m i, t 3 i c k i (s c) l i (+b) m i, i1,. From formul (9) we obtin R t1 1 t 1 t3 1 cos Î1OI (T 1 + b + c t1 t t3 ) t 1 t t 3 (T b + c +αβ ( ) t 1 t t 3 α + b β + ) c [ )] [ )], R t1 1 t 1 t3 1 R t1 t t3 (T 1 ) ( t b t 1 + c t 3 1 (T ) ( t 1 + b t + c t 3 (8) where T 1 t t 1 + t3 1, T t 1 + t + t3, nd for i1,, we hve t 1 i t i t3 i (T i ) t 1 i + b t i + c t 3 i k i (s ) l i (b+c) m i, k i (s ) l i(b+c) m i k i (s ) l i(b+c) m i nd α k 1 (s ) l 1 (b+c) m 1 k 1 (s ) l 1(b+c) m 1 β bk 1 (s b) l 1 (+c) m 1 k 1 (s ) l 1(b+c) m 1 ck 1 (s c) l 1 (+b) m 1 k 1 (s ) l 1(b+c) m 1 k (s ) l (b+c) m, k (s ) l (b+c) m bk (s b) l (+c) m, k (s ) l (b+c) m ck (s c) l (+b) m. k (s ) l (b+c) m 9
If I 1, I re Cevin points of rnk k 1, k, then formul (8) becomes cos I 1 OI R (bc) k S k 1 1 (S k1 (bc) k S k ) (S k + ) ( bk 1 S k1 bk S k )( ck 1 [R (bc) k 1 S k 1 (S k1 ) ][R (bc) k S k (S k ) ] S k1 ck S k ), (9) where S l l + b l + c l. Here re few specil cses of formul (9). For k 1 0 nd k 1 we get the centroid G nd the incenter I of brycentric coordintes (1; 1; 1) nd (; b; c), respectively. Formul (9) becomes cos ĜOI 6R s r + Rr 9R s + r + 8Rr R Rr, (30) where bc4srr, S 0 3, S 1 s, S (s r 4Rr). For k we obtin the Lemoine point L of tringle ABC, of brycentric coordintes ( ; b ; c ), nd other two formuls re generted cos ĜOL 6R S S + 4S 4, (31) 9R S R S 48(Rrs) where S 4 S [(s + r + 4Rr) 16Rrs ], nd cos ÎOL RS + rs 4rs. (3) R Rr S 48r s Ech of the formuls (30),(31),(3) genertes Blundon type inequlity, but these inequlities hve not nice geometric interprettions. Let I 1, I, I 3 be three Cevin points of rnk (k; l; m) with brycentric coordintes s follows: k i (s ) l i (b+c) m i : b k i (s b) l i (+c) m i : c k i (s c) l i (+b) m i, i1,, 3, nd let t 1 i k i (s ) l i (b+c) m i, t i b k i (s b) l i (+c) m i, t 3 i c k i (s c) l i (+b) m i. Now, consider the numbers α ij t 1 j t 1 j + t j + t3 j t 1 i, t 1 i+ t i+ t 3 i nd nd t j β ij t 1 j + t j + t3 j t 3 j ij t 1 j + t j + t3 j t i, t 1 i+ t i+ t 3 i t 3 i, t 1 i+ t i+ t 3 i 10

Using the Cosine Lw in tringle I 1 I I 3 it follows cos Î1I I 3 I 1I + I I 3 I 3I 1 I 1 I I I 3 (β 1 1 +β 3 3 β ) b ( 1 α α 3 31 α 31 )+c (α 1 β 1 +α 3 β 3 α 31 β 31 ) β α 1 b α 1 β 1 c β α 3 b α 3 β 3 c Theorem 4.1.
