Due to ts connecton to Molecular Dynamcs, the MDLG rgorously recovers the hydrodynamcs and allows to valdate the behavor of the lattce-gas or lattce-boltzmann methods drectly wthout usng the standard knetc theory approach. In ths paper, we show that the analytcal defnton of the equlbrum dstrbuton functon remans vald even for very hgh volume fractons. Keywords: molecular dynamcs; lattce gas; lattce Boltzmann method; PACS Nos.:.25.Hf, 23.K. Introducton The lattce gas automata were ntroduced by Frsch, Hasslacher and Pomeau n 986. These methods descrbe the presence of a partcle usng Boolean states and thus exhbt perfect collsons. However, the lattce gas methods suffer from statstcal nose and ther collson rules can have very complex mathematcal representaton 2. Later on, Boghosan et al. 3 ntroduced the nteger lattce gases, where one can control the level of fluctuatons, whle mantanng the exact conservaton laws and havng uncondtonal stablty. In the pursut of understandng better the fluctuatng systems, Blommel et al. 4 constructed a new nteger lattce gas wth Monte Carlo collson operator. The Molecular-Dynamcs-Lattce-Gas (MDLG) method 5,6 establshes a drect

After comparng the equlbrum propertes of the MDLG method to the lattce Boltzmann equlbrum, Parsa et al. 5 found that for any dlute gases for coarse-granng lattce spacng x exsts a coarse-graned tme step t such that the MDLG equlbra resembles the lattce Boltzmann method. However, an open queston remaned about the range of valdty for the predcted analytcal soluton of the equlbrum dstrbuton functon. The am of ths paper s to nvestgate the behavor of the MDLG method for varyng volume fractons of the underlyng MD smulaton. Ths analyss shows that the analytcal MDLG equlbrum functon remans vald even for very hgh volume fractons. The rest of the paper s summarzed as follows: In Secton 2, we elaborate upon the man components of the MDLG method. Our fndngs on how the equlbrum dstrbuton functon behaves wth varyng nomnal volume fracton are presented n Secton 3. Fnally, some concludng remarks and future dscussons are mentoned n Secton Molecular-Dynamcs-Lattce-Gas Method The MDLG method was orgnally ntroduced by Parsa et al. 5. It s based on an underlyng MD smulaton, where we track the mgraton of the partcles to mposed lattce postons wth dsplacement v after a tme step t, as shown n Fg.. Ths gves the nteger lattce gas occupaton number n (x,t) = j x [x j (t)] x v [x j (t t)], () where x [x j (t)] =, f partcle x s n lattce cell x at tme t, and x [x j (t)] = 0, otherwse.
3 Valdty of the Molecular-Dynamcs-Lattce-Gas Global Equlbrum Dstrbuton Functon 3 The MDLG evoluton equaton then takes the form of a lattce gas where the collson operator Ξ s defned as n (x+v,t+ t) = n (x,t)+ξ, (2) Ξ = n (x+v,t+ t) n (x,t). (3) Snce ths analyss s based on a MD smulaton, the resultng lattce gas model rgorously conserves the hydrodynamc propertes of the system, up to the coarsegranng approxmaton. We defne a Boltzmann average of the MDLG as f = n neq (4) and by takng an non-equlbrum ensemble average of Eq. (2), we obtan the MDLB evoluton equaton: f (x+v,t+ t) = f (x,t)+ω wth Ω = Ξ neq. (5) The global equlbrum dstrbuton functon can be numercally approxmated by averagng the lattce gas denstes n over the whole lattce and all teratons for an equlbrum system: f eq = n eq = x [x j (t)] x v [x j (t t)]. (6) The equlbrum functon can be analytcally predcted to be where and f eq d ρ eq = ( f eq,α = N e (u,α )2 2a 2 + u,α 2 + u,α + 2 a 2 = (δx α) 2 ( x) 2, [ erf [ erf α= f eq,α, (7) ) 2 2e u,α 2a 2 +e (u,α +)2 2a 2 ( ( )] u,α u,α ) erf 2a 2a ( ( )] u,α + u,α ) erf 2a 2a (8) N = a 2π, u,α = v α u α. (9) Here, (δx α ) 2 s the mean-square dsplacement and x s the lattce sze. For deal gas systems the mean-square dsplacement s gven n relaton to the velocty correlaton functon (δx) 2 = 2 t 0 dt (t t ) v α (t )v α (0), (0) whch s well approxmated by an exponental decay gven by ( v α (t )v α (0) = k B T exp t ), () λ
4 4 M.R. Parsa, A. Pachaleva and A.J. Wagner wth k B beng the Boltzmann constant, T the temperature n Lennard-Jones (LJ) unts, and λ the exponental decay constant 7,8,9. Now, we can express the meansquare dsplacement as a functon of a sngle free parameter λ: (δx) 2 = 2κ B Tλ 2 (exp ( t λ )+ t λ ). (2) that s depcted n Fg. 3. Our am s to fnd the valdty range of ths assumpton by comparng the measured equlbrum dstrbuton and the theoretcal predcton for dfferent nomnal volume fractons. 3. MDLG Equlbrum Dstrbuton Functon for Dfferent Volume Fractons Wth ths the equlbrum dstrbuton functon for a dscretzaton x, t can be gven n a form of the sngle parameter a 2 of Eq.(0). However, so far ths has only been tested for a low volume fracton of φ = We have chosen four dfferent setups wth varyng volume fractons for our underlyng MD smulatons wth standard Lennard-Jones (LJ) nteracton potental defned as [ (σ 2 ( σ ) ] 6 V LJ = 4ε (3) r) r where ε s the depth of the potental well, σ the dstance where the LJ potental s zero and r the dstance between partcles. The MD smulatons were performed usng the open-source LAMMPS framework. We vary the volume fracton φ of the MD smulatons from φ = to φ = wth velocty u = 0. The volume fracton φ s defned for crcular LJ partcles wth radus r = σ wth σ beng the dstance at whch the nter partcle potental goes to zero. Even though, the smulated volume fracton s above the maxmum package densty for hard spheres (φ = ), we stll observe dffuson due to the hgh temperature of the system (50 LJ unts). When we ncrease the volume fracton even more, the system goes nto a sold state and the dynamcs slows down consderably. A vsual representaton of the varaton of the used volume fractons can be seen n Fg. 2(a)-(d). All the smulatons were ntalzed wth homogeneously dstrbuted partcles. The total number of measured teratons for each smulaton setup s 2, 000, 000 wth a tme step of 0.000τ, whch corresponds to a tmescale of τ = 200. As n the prevous study 5, a suffcent number of ntal teratons, (0 6,0 6,0 6,0 7, respectvely), were dscarded from the samplng process to ensure that the system has reached an equlbrum state before the probng. After fttng the exponental constant λ of the velocty correlaton functon n Eq. () from the MD data, we can use the relaton between the velocty correlaton functon and the mean-square dsplacement to obtan an analytcal representaton of the mean-square dsplacement as gven n Eq. (0) for each of the nomnal volume fractons (from φ = to φ = ). In Fg. 3, we compare the predcted

(0) and the measured value from the underlyng MD smulaton data. There s an excellent agreement between the theoretcal mean-square dsplacement and the measured one based on the velocty correlaton exponental ft for volume fractons from φ = to φ = Those volume fractons descrbe, n general, more gassy systems. For denser systems wth φ = , the measured mean-square dsplacement devate from the predcted one. As shown n Fg. 2(d), a system wth φ = s rather n a state close to a melted sold under hgh pressure. To valdate the analytcal soluton of the MDLG global equlbrum dstrbuton functon f eq n Eq. The legend can be seen n Fg. 4 (omtted for clarty).
7 Valdty of the Molecular-Dynamcs-Lattce-Gas Global Equlbrum Dstrbuton Functon 7 MD smulaton as a functon of a 2 from Eq. (9). In Fg. 4 and Fg. 5, we show that the theoretcal predcton of the MDLG global equlbrum dstrbuton functon f eq agrees well wth the measured one from them MD smulatons as long as the meansquare dsplacement can be approxmated from the theory Eq. (0) as depcted n Fg. 3. However, once ths relaton breaks, the measured global equlbrum dstrbuton functon also starts to devate from the theoretcally predcted values as shown n Fg. 5. For systems wth volume fracton around and above φ = , the MDLG global equlbrum dstrbuton functon s not well approxmated from the theoretcal mean-square dsplacement gven n Eq. (2). As a remedy, nstead of calculatng the theoretcal value of (δx) 2, we can measure the mean-square dsplacement as a functon of the tme step t drectly and use ths numercal value to obtan a 2. There s a notceable dfference between the MDLG global equlbrum dstrbuton functon obtaned from the predcted and from the measured mean-square dsplacement as depcted n Fg. 5(a) and Fg. 5(b), respectvely. Usng the measured mean-square dsplacement, however, we recover the correct MDLG global equlbrum dstrbuton functon from theory even for hgh volume fractons. We fnd, therefore, that the analytcal predcton of the equlbrum dstrbuton functon s correct for a large range of volume fractons, even after the relaton between the velocty correlaton functon and the mean-square dsplacement breaks. In ths case, we need to use the actual mean-square dsplacement measured from the MD smulaton nstead of usng the theoretcal soluton n Eq. () to obtan a Conclusons In ths work, we have nvestgated the behavor of the MDLG equlbrum functon n respect to dfferent volume fractons. We have shown that for a very large range of volume fractons, the equlbrum dstrbuton functon can be obtaned from a sngle parameter λ based on the relaton between the velocty correlaton functon and the mean-square dsplacement of the underlyng MD smulaton. However, for hgher volume fractons, ths correlaton does not apply, and the exponental ft from the velocty correlaton functon does not reproduce the rght behavor of the mean-square dsplacement anymore, whch leads also to wrong estmaton of the equlbrum dstrbuton functon n respect to the measured one from the MD smulaton. We found that by usng the measured mean-square dsplacement nstead of the theoretcal, we can stll recover the correct analytcal MDLG equlbrum dstrbuton functon. We conclude that the MDLG equlbrum dstrbuton functon appears to be unversally defned as a functon of the mean-square dsplacement and the lattce sze of the underlyng MD system. An exact knowledge of the equlbrum dstrbuton s mportant, f one wshes to examne the devaton of a system from local equlbrum. In a future publcaton, we ntend to nvestgate whether the MDLG collson operator can be expressed n
8 8 M.R. Parsa, A. Pachaleva and A.J. Wagner terms of a BGK collson operator Ω = Λ j (f eq j f j ) (4) wth Λ j beng the relaxaton matrx. Here the knowledge of an exact local equlbrum dstrbuton s of the essence. Prelmnary studes show that for nonequlbrum cases, we observe a small dfference (approx. 0.5%) between the measured and the analytcal global equlbrum dstrbuton functon. The reason for ths dscrepancy mght be due to the assumpton made n 5, that the probablty dstrbuton for the dsplacement s descrbed as a Gaussan for all scales (from ballstc to dffusve regme). Ths assumpton was made, because the probablty dstrbuton for short scales as well as the one for long scales can be descrbed by a Gaussan dstrbuton. However, ntermedate probabltes between the ballstc and the dffusve regme could have dfferent behavor, as for example the well-known cage effect descrbed by Chong et al. 0. Those ntermedate regmes due to ther nature, mght be better approxmated, for example, by a combnaton of two Gaussan dstrbutons. These consderatons are outsde the scope of the current paper and wll be a subject of future research. Addtonally, the knowledge of the equlbrum dstrbutons s essental when analyzng the fluctuaton behavour of MDLG systems, whch wll elucdate the correct form of fluctuatons for non-deal systems. Ths s the subject of a followng publcaton.
