Course Description and Objectives In keeping with the Standards for Foreign Language Learning (1996), Spanish, the second - semester course is structured around five consistent structures: De entrada, Estudio de palabras, Estudio cultura, Estudio de estructuras, and Reflexiones. Spanish 0112 will further provide the fundamentals of the Spanish language in order to increase proficiency in the four skills of listening, speaking, reading, and writing. The course s focus on both culture and language will ask you to make comparisons between your native language and Spanish, and between your culture and the cultures we will study. The course will provide you with opportunities to use Spanish both inside and outside the classroom Students will actively engage themselves in pair/group activities to express themselves in basic situations Classroom time will be used for intensive language practice in meaningful contexts (i.e., applying important grammatical concepts, essential vocabulary, and cultural norms needed to maintain communication). Students are expected to study and complete the exercises in the book and workbook outside of class, in addition any other activities assigned in class. Student should use their Spanish as much as possible. Academic Honesty All student work must be original. Therefore, the use of handheld electronic translators and/or computer

2 translation programs is prohibited. While students are encouraged to utilize tutor services, they are reminded that tutors are to be consulted for help with error correction and grammatical explanation and practice, not for completion of a student s original work. Students who copy the work of others, allow other students to copy their work, submit the work of another student as though it were their own or plagiarize in any way will be charged with academic dishonesty. This may lead to a reduction in the course grade, expulsion from the course with a grade of F assigned and suspension or dismissal from the university. Attendance Attendance is taken every day. You will be permitted to miss 4 classes before your grade will be affected. A strong correlation exists between regular classroom attendance, participation and academic success. Students are responsible for keeping track of upcoming homework, quizzes, tests, and major assignments. Assume that if you are absent you are still responsible for being prepared on the day you return to class. Tardiness and/or leaving before the end of the class period are not acceptable because it is disruptive to the instructor and to your classmates. Make-up Policy No make-up chapter tests or quizzes will be given. If you miss a test or any other evaluation and you have legitimate documentation that justifies your absence (illness, family emergency /crisis, school-sponsored activity, a religious holiday), the following test/evaluation will count for both the test you missed and for the points of the new one. If you miss the last regular test, your grade will be the average from your previous tests. If you do not provide documentation for your absence, you will receive 0 points for that test. If you miss your Final Exam, you will receive a 0 for the test. If you miss more than one exam/quiz, the result will be a 0. Remember, there are no make-ups for Chapter exams or quizzes. You must make-up writing, listening, speaking assessments. These must be made up in a timely fashion. Excused absences (legitimate documentation) 1. Officially sponsored university activity with an official excuse provided by the faculty supervisor. 2. An illness for which you can provide a doctor s excuse verifying you were too sick to attend class. 3. A family emergency (e.g., death in the family), or other extenuating circumstances (e.g., an illness which requires hospitalization) will be considered only with clearance from the Academic Affairs Office. For this, you or a family member must notify the Academic Affairs Office. You will receive instructions for providing appropriate documentation regarding the legitimacy of your absence and then notify your teachers that your absence is legitimate. Keep in mind that it is your responsibility to make arrangements as soon as

3 you return to school to make up the work you missed or the absences will affect your grade. Please note: Changes in work schedules, personal celebrations (i.e. birthdays), transportation problems, or an illness that does not require a visit to the doctor are NOT considered to be legitimate reasons for missing tests. Participation and Preparation Outstanding students prepare for class, and they participate frequently and enthusiastically in classroom discussions. Active participation reflects both your desire to learn and your preparation for class. Class participation will be based on: homework, class preparation, group work, use of Spanish in the classroom, and attitude (respect towards the class, peers, and the instructor). Remember that 5% (50 points) of your final grade is based on your ACTIVE DAILY PARTICIPATION. It is important to volunteer every day in class. Additional Information - The use of cell phones and laptops is prohibited during class, no exceptions. - Please feel free to bring something to drink, but be considerate of everyone else in the room and clean up after yourself. - If you miss a class and need information about the material you missed, please try to get the information from a classmate first. If you can t, please talk to me about it outside of class. me. It s hard sometimes for me to talk to you before or after class, and I may not have the handouts or information you need right then. IMPORTANT 1 If you have a disability for which you are or may be requesting an accommodation, you are encouraged to contact both your instructor and the Office of Health & Wellness Services as early as possible in the term. They will verify your disability and determine reasonable accommodations for this course. IMPORTANT 2: Add/Drop: The period to add or drop a class for the 2016 spring term ends on March 16, Any student wishing to add or drop after that date must have the Professor s approval and the approval of the Assistant to the Vice President for Academic Affairs. IMPORTANT 3: Academic Success Center and Tutoring Services: If you find yourself having difficulty in this class, see your Professor. In addition, the Academic Counselors in the Academic Success Center can assist you in staying on track academically. You may complete an on-line request for an individual tutor at the ASC s website, where you may also access information regarding drop-in tutoring and Supplemental Instruction (SI) sessions. Tutoring and other ASC services are free to all students. In the event you receive notification from the ASC regarding your performance in class, be sure to follow- through to obtain assistance. The Academic Counselors are committed to helping all students maximize academic potential.

Because the textbook i n t r o d u c e s and explains what yo u are expected t o practice in the workbook, ALWAYS read and study the assigned pages in the textbook B EFORE doing t h e workbook pages. Gramma r exercises assigned in the t e x t b o o k will be reviewed in class. Wo r k b o o k exercises will often be c o r r e c t e d in class, and occasionally you will turn them in to be graded. YOU MUST DO THE EXCERSISES FROM THE WORKBOOK EVERYDAY. Assessme n t s Writing activities will be assigned during the semester. R e a d i n g quizzes will be assigned during the semester. L i s t e n i n g assessments w i l l be a part o f the General Quizzes/Chapter e x a ms. Two s p e a ki n g quizzes will be assigned during the semester. T e s t s There will be 4 comp r e h e n s i v e t e s t s and one final e x a m ( Test 5). Tests a r e b a s e d on previous class ma t e r i a l s, vocabulary, readings for t h e c u r r e n t class, and manual exercises. No make - u p will be given. R e me mb e r that l e a r n i n g a language is alwa ys comp r e h e n s i v e ; that is e a c h new lesson builds on previously s t u d i e d material. Although the f o c u s for each exam will involve mo s t l y the new material since the p r e v i o u s exam, IT IS CRITI C A L THAT YOU REGULARLY REVI E W P R E VI O US MATERIAL. Participation a n d having a good attitude in this class are extremely i mp o r t a n t. Re me mb e r the following suggestions: 1. Do not skip any c l a s s e s. 2. Do not come to class late. 3. Bring to class a positive, active and respectful attitude. 4. M a k e sure your participation is active during the whole course. 5. S h o w interest in the oral, written and culture activities. 6.
