1 COURSE: GEOL (lecture) and GEOL1404.L01 L (lab) Historical Geology Historical Geology chronicles the formation and development of Earth. In this context, our planet is discussed as a system composed of several interdependent subsystems, including the atmosphere, hydrosphere, etc. Special emphasis is placed on the historical development of life forms that compose the biosphere. Content material includes the principles of physical and historical geology. Also covered will be the study of the Earth's composition, structure, and internal and external processes. Content material also includes the geologic history of the Earth and the evolution of life. The GEOL 1404 curriculum requires both a lecture and a lab. Hence, you must register for and complete both to receive credit. Credit value: 4 hours Prerequisites: Concurrent enrollment in READ Eligibility to enroll in MATH 0308 or MATH Previous completion of GEOL 1403 (Physical Geology) and lab. Lab fee: $50. Please send s using your KC account. I am required to answer using your KC account. EVALUATION: The GEOL1404 curriculum includes both a lecture and lab. Hence, you must complete both parts to receive credit. Grades for the lecture and lab will be calculated

2 separately (see below) and then combined for a final course grade. The lecture will count 75% and the lab 25%. Lecture grades will be based on five grades: We will have three (3) exams (essay and multiple choice/true-false) and a final exam (multiple choice/true-false). Most of these exams (except for the final) will require an essay scantron. We also will have quizzes and homework assignments (approximately 12) covering reading assignments from the previous week. Ten of these grades will be averaged for the final assignment grade. THE FINAL LECTURE GRADE WILL BE DETERMINED BY AVERAGING THE FINAL ASSIGNMENT GRADE (25%), FINAL EXAM GRADE (25%), WITH THE TWO HIGHEST OF THE SEMESTER EXAM GRADES (EACH 25%). NOTE: Assignment grades will only count if you attend the lecture in which the assignment is turned in (i.e., you may not come to class, take the quiz, and then leave before the lecture begins). The majority of the lab grade will be based on a series of daily exercises. There will also be a term project, which is worth two or three lab exercises. There also may be one or two lab quizzes, which are weighted the same as daily exercises. Lab exercises and projects are designed to enhance learning of lecture material, as well as provide a practical view of geology, including recognition and classification skills. Hence, the lab is not optional; attendance is required. The following grading scale will be used for final grades: % A 80 89% B 70 79% C 60 69% D 0 59% F POLICIES: A. Attendance, Participation, and Absences This class requires attendance, participation, and completion of assigned work in order to adequately learn the material. Significant amounts of reading of the textbook are also required. Please limit absences to emergencies. Repeated absences may result in disciplinary action and should be discussed with the instructor. Please be punctual and arrive before class starts. B. Make-up Examination Procedure If you are unable to take one of the semester exams during the scheduled testing period make sure and contact the instructor before that exam to discuss. That exam will probably be used as the one that you drop, unless you have a compelling reason (as determined by the instructor) for a make-up exam. Compelling reasons usually involve unavoidable personal health issues and may require documentation. If you know you will have an excused absence, please contact the instructor beforehand to arrange testing. C. Cell Phones, Pagers, and Children Turn off cell phones and pagers during lectures and labs. Use of cellphones, including texting and playing games, will be subject to disciplinary action. Use of laptops to take notes is fine. However, use of laptops for texting and playing games also will be subject to disciplinary action. Please do not bring children to class unless approved by the instructor. Food generally is not allowed in labs.

3 Students are expected to assist in maintaining a classroom environment that is conducive to learning. Inappropriate or distractive classroom behavior is prohibited in order to assure that everyone has an opportunity to gain from time spent in class. Should a disruptive classroom incident occur, the faculty member in charge may remove the student on either a temporary or a permanent basis. Students have the right to appeal through the appropriate channels. (Kilgore College Student Handbook) D. Academic Honesty Academic honesty is the concept that a student is personally responsible for all of the work that he/she presents for evaluation. All of this work should be independently developed. Students in this class are required to behave in a manner that supports and encourages the highest degree of honesty and academic achievement among all students. In translation, this means that it s ok to study together and even to share class notes on a limited basis, particularly in the case of an unavoidable absence. However, copying and presenting another person s work or knowledge as your own is cheating and will result in serious disciplinary action. E. Drop date after 75% of class is completed DISCLAIMER: The instructor reserves the right to make modifications in this syllabus. These changes may include additional assignments, changes in grading policy, changes in grading scale, etc. If any changes are made, students will be clearly notified. The instructor also reserves the right to remove or drop a student for disruptive behavior. STUDENT LEARNING OUTCOMES AND CORE CURRICULM OBJECTIVES: STUDENT LEARNING OUTCOMES Upon successful completion of this course, students will: 1. Describe how the application of the scientific method has led to our current understanding of Earth history. 2. Explain the historical development of Geology as a science and how it was influenced by early interpretations of fossils and the theory of evolution. 3. Communicate how principles of relative and numerical age dating have been used to develop the Geologic Time Scale. 4. Describe the processes involved in the formation and differentiation of the Earth and identify major milestones in the physical evolution of the planet. 5. Identify the major milestones in the evolution of life from its initial inorganic stages, through development of the major animal and plant groups, to mass extinctions.

4 6. Explain how rocks and fossils are used to interpret ancient environments. 7. Identify the major tectonic events in the geologic evolution of North America. 8. Classify and interpret depositional environments using sedimentary rocks and fossils. Assessment: exams, projects, s 9.
