The long-time foes first squared off in 1916 with the Statesmen earning a pair of victories, 9-1 and One of the oldest rivalries on Hobart s schedule, only the Statesmen and Cornell Big Red have played more times (126). FOR STARTERS: Hobart is in season opening games. The Statesmen have won back-to-back season openers, knocking off Butler in 2005 (11-7) and Bucknell in 2006 (10-8). Hobart has opened six seasons against Syracuse with the Orange holding a 4-2 lead in those contests. KRAUS-SIMMONS TROPHY: Today marks the 22nd competition for the Kraus-Simmons Trophy. The trophy honors National Lacrosse Hall of Fame coaches Babe Kraus of Hobart and Syracuse s Roy Simmons Sr. HAVE TROPHY WILL TRAVEL: The Statesmen captured the Kraus-Simmons Trophy with a 9-8 victory over Syracuse last season. It was the first time Hobart captured the cup since the first Kraus-Simmons game in 1986 (16-13). CLOSE CALLS: Twenty-seven of the 92 meetings between Hobart and Syracuse have been decided by three goals or less. The Statesmen are in those contests. Of those games, 12 have been decided by just a single goal with Hobart earning wins in 1964 (11-10) and 2006 (9-8). BREATHING ROOM: Twenty-four of the 92 meetings between Hobart and Syracuse have been decided by 10 goals or more. The Statesmen are 7-17 in those contests, but do boast the widest margin of victory in the series (+22), topping the Orange 23-1 in WHEN LAST WE MET: Hobart reclaimed the Kraus-Simmons Trophy for the first time in 20 years, defeating 13th-ranked Syracuse University 9-8 in front of 3,778 fans at the Carrier Dome. Goalie Mike DeSantis recorded a career-high 16 saves for the Statesmen. The victory was Hobart s first in the Carrier Dome against Syracuse and the first in the Salt City over the Orange since posting a 16-4 triumph in Midfielder Sean Murphy led the Statesmen with four points (2-2), while attackman Daryl Veltman and midfielder Nick Currie each netted a pair of goals. Patrick Perritt recorded three points (2-1) to lead Syracuse. WELCOME TO THE CLUB: The Statesmen s 12-7 win over St. John s on April 22, 2006, was the 700th victory in the storied history of Hobart lacrosse. In 104 varsity seasons, the Statesmen have an all-time record of (.631). Hobart is just the third collegiate lacrosse program to reach 700 wins, joining Johns Hopkins and Syracuse universities. HOME SWEET HOME: While the 2007 season begins with away games at Syracuse and vs. Bucknell, Hobart will benefit from a home-heavy schedule. The Statesmen will play at the friendly confines of McCooey Field or Boswell Field eight times. March will be especially friendly with six of the seven games Hobart plays in the month at home.

Junior Dan Spinella was Hobart s top X man, ranking fourth in the nation with a 61.8 percent success rate, while senior John Soden was 28th (.507). BALL HOGS: Hobart ranked fourth in the nation last season in ground balls per game, collecting per game. Only Virginia (46.94), Denver (42.12), and Georgetown (39.07) picked up more GBs than the Statesmen. Sophomore Matt Smalley is the Statesmen s top returner with 58 ground balls in 2006, ranking 27th in the nation (4.46/g). CLIMBING THE LADDER: In just two seasons, attackman DARYL VELTMAN has already climbed into the top 10 in goals (50), assists (31), and points (81) by a Division I Statesman. He is tied for seventh in assists (with MARK WILLIAMSON 04), two behind No. 6 MATT CROWTHER 96; eight in points, nine behind Mike Conklin 06; and ninth in goals, one behind teammate Chris David. HOMECOMING: Today s game will serve as a homecoming for four Statesmen who hail from in and around the Salt City: sophomore JEFF COLBURN (CNS/ Liverpool) and JAMIE SPRAGUE (Marcellus/Marcellus), and first-years Kevin Curtin (Corcoran/Syracuse) and Mike Suits (CBA/Jamesville). DOUBLE DUTY: Three Statesmen play more than one sport at Hobart. Junior midfielder DAN SPINELLA and sophomore defenseman JUSTIN HAGER helped the football team to the NCAA Tournament as a fullback (3.5 yds/att) and linebacker (40 tkls, INT), respectively, while sophomore goalie PETER HANSEN plays for the squash team. OH CAPTAIN, MY CAPTAIN: Senior defenseman Chris Keough and junior midfielder Sean Murphy will serve as co-captains for the 2007 season. COACH K: Head Coach Matt Kerwick is beginning his sixth season at the helm of his alma mater s lacrosse program. The 2002 Patriot League Coach of the Year has a record at Hobart and is in 11 seasons as a head coach, including three-year stints at Alfred University and Randolph-Macon College. Last summer, Kerwick served as an assistant coach for the U.S. Lacrosse team that earned a silver medal at the ILF World Championship. CHAMPIONSHIP TRADITION: Hobart has made 25 appearances in the NCAA Tournament (4 Division I, 6 Division II, 15 Division III) and has won 16 national championships (1 USILA, 2 NCAA DII, 13 NCAA DIII). Hobart is one of only two schools to compete in the NCAA Tournament in all three divisions (Cortland State is the other).
