Navy enters the series having won six of its last seven games and is coming off a home stand in which it went 5-1. Navy has won eight games in come-from-behind fashion this season, including in five of its last six victories. When NCAA statistics were released on Monday, the Navy pitching staff ranked 42nd in the nation in strikeouts per nine innings with an average of Navy s strikeout-to-walk ratio of 2.72 is currently 26th-best in the country. It marks the second consecutive year and only the third time since 2003 that the service-academy rivals will meet to open the Patriot League schedule. Determining the Star Winner The winner of the four-game Army-Navy series will claim the coveted Star. If the series ends in a tie at two games apiece, the winner of the first game of the series will be awarded the Star. Milanes Breaks Loose Senior Dave Milanes enters this weekend with a team season-high seven-game hitting streak. Milanes, who was named Patriot League Player of the Week on Monday for the first time in his career, has raised his average by.077 over the last seven games and is now hitting.291. He is 13-for-30 (.433), with six extra-base hits and 11 RBIs over the last seven games. Nelson Continues His Stellar Start; Ranks Among the Nation s Best Senior starting pitcher Ben Nelson has been exceptional through the first six weeks of the season. In six starts, he is 5-1 with a league-best 1.30 ERA while being named Patriot League Pitcher of the Week on three occasions. With 45 Ks and just four walks in six starts this season, Nelson ranks eighth in the nation in strikeout-to-walk ratio. Nelson s 45 Ks rank 26th in the country and his walks per nine innings average of 0.86 ranks 25th. Just eight of the 31 hits he has surrendered have been extra-base hits in the 41 2/3rds innings he has thrown this season.... and Continuing to Move Up The Career Charts Nelson s 45 Ks this season have bumped him into a tie for fifth place on Navy s all-time strikeout list with a total of 229. He also ranks in a tie for sixth on the Patriot League s all-time K list. The native of Winter Springs, Fla., has 41-career starts and needs four more starts this season to tie the Navy career record, currently held by Mark McCoy. 4 Paul Kostacopoulos Head Coach Providence (1987) Eighth Year at Navy: (.548) 24th Year Overall: (.585) Through seven years at Navy, Kostacopoulos enters the 2013 season with 205 victories - making him the third-winningest head coach in the program s 117-year history. In five of his seven seasons, the Mids have won at least 30 games; marking the first time ever the program has accomplished the feat. For those within the college baseball ranks, this type of success should not come as a surprise as it has been synonymous with Kostacopoulos throughout his career. Kostacopoulos became the 37th-active NCAA Division I head coach to reach the 700-win plateau as he achieved the mark last season. Now in his 24th year as a collegiate head coach, he enters 2013 with an all-time record of (.586). He has won more than 30 games 14 times during his career and boasted a winning percentage of.500 or better 18 times in his career. The Middletown, Conn., native guided the Midshipmen to three-consecutive 30-win seasons from a first in program history. In fact, prior to his arrival, Navy had posted three 30-win campaigns in the program s first 109 years. Under his watch, Navy has had six selections in the MLB First-Year Player Draft since Most recently, outfielder Alex Azor and starting pitcher Preston Gainey were both chosen in the 2012 draft. Azor was selected by the Toronto Blue Jays in the 10th round (No. 325 overall), while Gainey was taken in the 11th round (No. 365 overall) by the Milwaukee Brewers. Azor s 10th-round selection was the highest a player from the Naval Academy has ever been taken in the MLB Draft. The selection of Azor and Gainey marked the third time Navy had two draft picks in the same year. Pitchers Mitch Harris (13th round, St. Louis) and Oliver Drake (43rd round, Baltimore) were both selected in 2008, and prior to that in 2007, Harris (24th round, Atlanta) and catcher Jonathan Johnston (42nd round, Oakland) became the first Navy duo selected in school history. Last season, Kostacopoulos led Navy to its second consecutive Patriot League tournament appearance. In 2011, he led Navy to the both the Patriot League regular season and tournament championships as the Mids earned an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament. Kostacopoulos was named Patriot League Coach of the Year and a total of six Mids were named to the All-Patriot League Teams. The 2011 NCAA Tournament appearance was the fifth of Kostacopoulos career as he previously guided Providence (1992, 95) and Maine (2002, 05) to the postseason. The Mids 33 wins marked the third-highest total in program history, while their runs (358) and hits (530) were both good for second on Navy s all-time list. The pitching staff set a new program record with a total of 423 strikeouts. Prior to his arrival in Annapolis, Kostacopoulos coached Maine to a (.593) mark over nine years in Orono. He led the team to a record in 2005, as the Black Bears won the America East Championship and earned a berth in the NCAA Tournament for the second time in his tenure. At the NCAA Regional in Oxford, Miss., Maine defeated Southern Miss, 12-2, giving the school its first NCAA Tournament baseball win since Kostacopoulos, 48, came to Maine after seven years at Providence College where he led his squads to a record of (.616). In 1995, his Friars were and won a school-record 16 Big East games. After winning the regular-season Big East Championship, the Friars finished as the tournament runner-up and received an at-large berth to the NCAA Tournament. Providence was in 1992 and won the Big East Tournament to advance to the NCAA South I Regional. Kostacopoulos served as an assistant at Providence for two seasons before 1990, when at age 25, he became the youngest Division I head coach in the country. He comes from a family steeped in New England baseball; his father, Peter Kostacopoulos, recorded over 400 wins in 27 seasons as head baseball coach at Wesleyan University, and his brother, Pete, head coach at the Worcester Academy, has held coaching positions at Colby College, Dartmouth College, and Wesleyan. Don t Count Em Out Navy has trailed its opponent at some point in eight of its 12 wins this season. Most recently, the Mids won five consecutive games in come-from-behind fashion. The Mids defeated Yale, 6-5 (trailing 2-1 in the seventh), Delaware State, (trailing 9-5 in the fourth), Princeton, 8-2 (trailing 2-0 in the second), 2-1 (trailing 1-0 in the sixth) and 9-4, (trailing 3-0 in the fourth). Navy has trailed in the fourth inning or later in five of its eight come-from-behind wins. Milanes Posts Seven RBIs, Joins the 5-for-5 Club Dave Milanes became the second Mid this season to go 5-for-5 at the plate when he did so in the March 20th win over Delaware State. Milanes had two, three-rbi doubles, a solo home run and a pair of singles as he drove in seven runs - the most by a Mid since John Cocca also had seven RBIs against Holy Cross on April 21, The seven RBIs ties the record for the third most in a game in program history. Milanes joined Kash Manzelli as the other Mid that has gone 5-for-5 this season. Manzelli s five-hit game came on March 10 in Navy s 12-0 win over LIU-Brooklyn. It s the first time Navy has had two players post five-hit games in the same year since Alex Azor and Jeff Bland (twice) in Doubles and Homers for Dupe Senior Greg Dupell has ranked in the top-25 in doubles, nationally, each week since statistics were released. Currently, Dupell ranks 22nd in the country with 10 doubles this season, which is just four behind the national leader. Dupell has registered a total of 14 doubles in each of the last two seasons. The Navy record for doubles in a season is 21, set by Steve Mauro in With two home runs in the last five games, he now has 14 for his career, which is tied for seventh in program history. Shortstop David Wiedeman s 48 starts in 2012 were the most by a Navy freshman since Nick Driscoll also started 48 in 2008

Rinehart Nearing the Navy Career-Appearances Record Senior reliever and team captain Joel Rinehart has a team-leading 12 appearances already this season, giving him a total of 67 in his career. He needs just one more to tie Joe Koessler ( ) for the program record. With 13 saves, Rinehart is three shy of tying J.D. Melton for the top spot on Navy s all-time saves list. For the second consecutive season, Rinehart was named to the NCBWA Stopper of the Year Watch List. The award is given annually to the top relief pitcher in NCAA Division I baseball. Nominations for the NCBWA Stopper of the Year Award were made by baseball sports information/media relations contacts. The initial list of 75 will be updated with a mid-season release the week of April 16, including the national saves leaders. Dupell is Navy s Current Iron Man Greg Dupell is Navy s active leader in consecutive starts with 130 entering play this weekend. The senior started the final 54 games of the 2011 season and was the only Mid to start all 52 last season. Beans Stepping Up at the Plate With multiple hits and five RBIs in four of the last six games, Brandon Beans has bumped his average by.058 and enters this weekend with a team-leading.308 batting average. The junior has a pair of four-hit games this season and ranks second on the team with seven multi-hit games. Army-Navy in Navy is across all sports against Army this season, including a mark in Star Games. Navy s Star wins have come in men s cross country, women s cross country, women s soccer, men s swimming & diving, women s swimming & diving, football, women s indoor track & field, men s indoor track & field and wrestling. Navy needs two more N-Stars to clinch a tie and three more to clinch the N-Star series over Army. Navy is over the last 16 years against Army in the Star Series and over the last 34 years in the Star series. Solid in the Field in 2012 Navy s.971 fielding percentage last season was the second best in school history with only the 1987 team s.973 mark ranking higher. The Midshipmen committed 56 errors in 2012, compared to their opponent s total of 81. Huggins Steps Up In First-Career Starts Sophomore Jonathan Huggins started all four games in center field against Air Force (Feb ) and certainly made the most of the opportunity. Huggins had a hit in each of the four games and went 6-for-14 (.429) in the series. He also stole a base and scored two runs. The Boynton Beach, Fla., native came into the season with one hit (a solo home run) in 11-career at bats and no starts. Navy is 4-1 when Kash Manzelli has multiple hits in a game this season

6 Mids Among the Nation s Best in Triples in 2012 The Mids belted their first two triples of the season in the home opener on Feb. 20. Last season Navy led the Patriot League and ranked eighth in the nation in triples with 27. The Mids triples per game average of 0.52 was fifth highest in the country. The 27 triples tied for the second-highest total in school history, just three shy of tying the 1995 squad for first place. Greg Dupell and Andrew Hahn led the Patriot League with six triples each. Big Numbers Against Delaware State Navy s 18 hits in its win over Delaware State on March 20th was its most since producing 19 in a win over UMES on Feb. 22 last season. Navy s five doubles in the game were its most since they had six against Coppin State on March 2, Patriot League Preseason Poll Navy was picked third in the Patriot League preseason poll, released on Feb. 13. Holy Cross and Army shared the top spot as each received 45 points. Holy Cross received six first-place votes and Army five. The Mids received 32 points to take third place, followed by Bucknell at 29, Lafayette at 15 and Lehigh with 14. Bucknell received one first-place vote. For the first time ever, the Patriot League also announced a Preseason All-Patriot League Team. Senior starting pitcher Ben Nelson and senior outfielder Greg Dupell both earned a spot on the team, which was also selected by the conference s head coaches and sports information contacts. Preseason Pundits CollegeBaseballInsider.com surveyed all six Patriot League coaches for its conference preview, released on Feb. 14. Chris Cannon was selected as the best defensive catcher and Greg Dupell was selected as one of the best pure hitters, biggest power threats and hitters you least want to face. The Senior Class With 10 seniors, Navy has its largest senior class since The group has combined for 615 games played and 427 starts entering the season. The 10 seniors received their service assignments in late November. Three Mids will be commissioned as Marine Corps 2nd Lieutenants, including: Johnny Schoberl (Marine Corps Ground), Dave Milanes (Marine Corps Ground) and Jake Coffey (Marine Corps Pilot). The balance of the class will be commissioned as Ensigns in the Navy, including: Greg Dupell (Pilot), Craig Veech (Pilot), Dylan Wheeler (Pilot), Ben Nelson (Naval Flight Officer), Chris Campbell (Naval Intelligence), Stephen Geiss (Surface Warfare) and Joel Rinehart (Nuclear Surface Warfare). Graduates of the Naval Academy serve a minimum of five years in the Navy or Marine Corps, while pilots serve eight years upon earning their wings.
