Monday/Wednesday/Friday Notes Week 4 (9/26, 9/28, 9/30) We had a fire drill and talked about safety, STOP DROP AND ROLL, STAY LOW & GO. These would be great things to reiterate at home. Some friends wrote a letter to our moms and dads asking where the safe meeting place is outside our house in case of fire. WHAT IS A FIRE DRILL? Emmett: If you touch fire it will burn you or you ll die. Declan: Your bones will get buried under water. We went to Thompson s Apple Orchard. Thank you for driving, chaperoning, and leaving car seats. We had a cart ride pulled by a tractor, picked apples, played Apple, Apple, Pumpkin, ate donuts, read a story and played on playground equipment. We put up some pictures of pirate ships in the block area to inspire further block building. We drew pictures of the orchard. WHAT DID YOU LIKE ABOUT OUR FIELD TRIP? Emmett: I love eating donuts and having the apple cider. Sophia: Apple cider is really, really good. That ride. Declan: I like all of it. Tristan: The tractor ride. We made Apple Pie on Friday morning. After Nicholas helped Judy put the pie in the oven, him and Emmett played with the leftover dough and flour and made little pies. Emmett: I ve tasted apple pie since I was a baby, and it was really good. In the afternoon, Declan, Emmett, and Miles cut apples for raw apple pie. Emmett and Miles ate some and Emmett said, I want some more. Miles said, I cut apples and stirred them and scooped them just like Emmett. We provided doctor supplies (stethoscopes, band-aids, and other tools) in the loft for their hospital play. Declan: There is something in my brain. It s a germ. I think it s a good germ. I m the good germ s friend. Friends played with play dough and made cookies and cakes. They sang Happy Birthday. They also made Chocolate Chip Cookies and Parmesan Cookies for everyone. Some people worked with Aja to cut out leaves for our class tree. Others did leaf rubbings outside, which we put on the tree. At Circle, we read Fall Changes and talked about our trees. We looked out the window. Nicholas: The leaves turn colors to yellow and orange. Nicholas read The Kissing Hand to us, and it has inspired to us to do a unit on reading and storytelling.
We read Golden Egg Book and The Sunflower House at Circle Time. Some questions came up: Where Do Bunnies Come From? What hatches out of an egg? Tristan: A chick and a baby crocodile. Declan: I think we should investigate what eggs do. Miles: Chicks and birds hatch out of eggs. Mamas get worms for the baby birds. Emmett: A crocodile and an alligator and a bird and a chick and bunnies and dogs and turtles and frogs. Sophia: people. Declan built a satellite out of wood and a nail. It shows people on Earth. Tristan built a boat for cars. He and Emmett drove cars on it. Sophia sorted buttons by color. Monday/Wednesday/Friday Notes Week 5 (10/3, 10/5, 10/7) We sang a song about planting trees and read A Tree is a Plant at Circle Time. HOW DOES A TREE GROW: Sophia: You put seeds in it. I like to eat apples and I like to grow them. Nicholas: A tree is a toy, because you climb on it. Isabelle: I see bees and flowers. I bet a tree grows longer than I don t know. We then looked at a tree then drew trees and put them up on a board and viewed each other s unique representations of trees. In the block area, a dance floor was made. Finn said, I want to make a tower. Emmett and Judy experimented with how to tumble a gnome down some stairs and a ramp. Declan made Bumblebee out of blocks. Sophia: I m making a pink square. Tristan: A pink square? That s funny! Math and Science is everywhere in our classroom, here are some examples. We looked at seeds in books and read about green beans, sunflowers and the book, Carrots Grow Underground. Judy asked WHAT HAS SEEDS IN IT THAT YOU EAT? Miles: apple Tristan: pear Declan: cucumber Emmett: oranges We observed the caterpillars and Leah fed them tomatoes and observed how they eat. Tristan asked if we can touch it and Declan asked, why does it have a horn? Tristan, Declan and Sophia did sink and float activities with the Kindergarteners. Kianna brought a milkweed to school and said, Look, it stuck to me. Look how many. Look, they fly in the air! We looked at measuring sticks and Leah used them to measure Judy and the sink, she pretended they were crutches, and said, I m six and one. Isabelle sorted and divided manipulatives onto chairs. Nicholas said, 3 plus 1 is 4 and 2 plus 2 is 4.
Kianna worked with Pattern Blocks. First she used pre-designed pattern cards, and then she made her own designs. Judy taught Emmett about the game of Checkers. Kianna, Leah, Isabelle, and Dylan joined in. Isabelle counted all the black checkers. Judy and Dylan experimented with magnets. As Emmett observed, he answered Judy s question, How does it stretch? Emmett: It s a magnet. Judy: How do magnets work? Emmett: It s electricity. Judy: Where does electricity come from? Emmett: Power lines. Leah, Kianna, and Dylan did cutting with scissors and paper. Dylan said, Let s finish our tree! Nicholas said, Can I write something? and then traced his hand. Sophia said, I want to draw. While drawing a picture of flowers she said, I m not finished, no one can see. Its flowers and me. I changed my brown hair to blue because I don t like my brown hair. Emmett: Piñatas are fun. Leah: I had a dog piñata. Isabelle: On my next birthday, I m going to turn six. Isabelle: I m trying to make something that Halloween people will come over and say trick or treat, and will give us candy and it will make sense. Finn looked through binoculars and said, I can see you Judy! Judy asked, What do I look like? Finn stated, A commercial that s on TV. Isabelle used the glue gun for her ongoing woodworking project. She chose to save it in the classroom to continue working on it. Isabelle, Sophia, and Leah used all the felt pieces. It s a whole family and outside time. We are still playing hospital in the loft. Isabelle, Leah, Dylan, Nicholas, and Sophia were walking around the room with stethoscopes. Nicholas listened to Judy s back with a stethoscope. I heard a heartbeat on your back! Tristan gave Judy a vaccine. Nicholas: I got a flu shot. Do you want to see my flu shot? Aja: Are you giving flu shots out at the hospital? Nicholas: Yes. Aja: Do you want to make a sign to let people know? Nicholas made a sign that said FLU SHOT by copying the letters Aja wrote down. We hung it up. Sophia and Dylan played hospital, and Sophia said, Let me take your splinter out.
On Monday, Finn played in the kitchen and said, This is my work. It s the distillery, and I m a grown up. On Wednesday, Finn played in the kitchen and said, I m just getting the garbage out and putting it at the dump. The dump is really, really far away. Mom and Dad always get out to the people at the dump. I m the dumper! On Friday, Finn did more dumping of dishes, and he said, I m working at the dump. Nicholas and Sophia spent a lot of time under the loft organizing the doll things, dressing babies, and putting them to sleep. Conve rsation WHILE Color Mixing with Droppe rs: Tristan: Now lets see what mellow yellow makes. Declan: Hey, I m letting Emmett use mine. Miles: Look, it makes brown! Judy: What colors did you use? Miles: Red, Yellow, and Green Tristan: What did you make Miles? Miles: Look. It made green. Emmett: It s a river. Conve rsation AFTER Color Mixing with Droppers: Declan: When I grow up I want to be a scientist and I m going to be super smart to my family. I wanted to make black and I did. I just did green and blue. Miles: I wanted to make black so I mixed yellow and blue and red and green all together. Emmett: I wanted to make blue so I mixed blue and green. Tristan: I wanted to make red, so I did. Sophia: I made green with red, blue, yellow. On Friday we said goodbye to Dylan. Children all hugged Dylan and said We ll miss you. Monday/Wednesday/Friday Notes Week 6 (10/ /14) Leah found a worm in the pumpkin seeds. HOW DO PUMPKINS GROW? Nicholas: you plant a seed. Isabelle: And it grows into a flower and then a pumpkin grows. Finn: the pumpkin said I m old and loo Leah: You plant seeds and it grows and grows and grows and then it s a pumpkin and fresh sun and fresh water and aliens in space and I love you. Goodbye. Emmett: You put a seed in the ground and cover it with dirt and then it turns into a pumpkin for Halloween. Sophia: I have scarecrows at my house and a pumpkin that says, Welcome. Tristan: You get seeds Declan: They grow and grow and then there is a pumpkin
Miles: First we dig a big hole with shovels and then we plan the seeds. You wait until Halloween and then it will be this big! Kianna made a pattern of yellow hexagons and green triangles. Leah stacked the pattern blocks. Tristan, miles, Emmett, and Declan laced spools and shapes on string. Declan: What is sewing? Emmett counted up to 12 and said, I want this many more. Declan: 13?, 14?, 17?, 18? Emmett lined up all the bears in a V formation. All the bears were marching to Africa. On Wednesday afternoon, Declan, Tristan, Sophia, Emmett, and Miles mixed colors to make Jack-O-Lanterns. Then everybody painted and glued 5 Little Pumpkin pictures on Friday. They counted pumpkins and fence posts and asked for triangles, squares, and circles for their faces. Finn: 1,2,3,4 Judy: How many more pumpkins do you need to have 5? Finn: 5! Sophia: My Mommy is a doctor. Aja: What kind of doctor? Sophia: A doctor of fixing boo boos. Because that s what doctors do fix boo boos. Isabelle told Leah, He s hiking up Mt. Neverest, as they made a felt board story together. In our classroom, conflict arises. Here are a few examples from this week of how we redirect violent play or get children to express themselves in a safe way: Nicholas and Emmett were arguing about what their block building was. We encouraged them to make some plans of their different ideas. Nicholas: This could be a thingy to launch from ships. It s a transformer. It s called a scope watcher. Emmett: I m drawing plans for the airplane. This is a map. We looked at Richard Scarry s book to see more pictures of airplanes and submarines to get ideas. Leah, Emmett, and Nicholas built a pirate ship and were using sticks as weapons. Judy approached them and said it made her nervous. She asked them what else they could use the sticks for: Nicholas: A laser Emmett: Steering Leah: A triangle Finn: I m a bad guy. They put good guys in jail. Leah: I m a bad girl. No one can come in. Judy: What will you do in your bad house?
Leah: We are going to have dinner. Finn: My grandma is calling. Declan: Are you the boss? Judy and Declan had a conversation about Mommies and Daddies and teachers keeping kids safe and friendly, and learning. We read How to be a Friend and then went around the circle and said a friendly thing. Sophia: I like you. Declan: I love you. Tristan: I like the way you play with me Emmett: You re my best friend. Miles: I love you because you give me turns. At the Sand Table, Emmett, Isabelle, Sophia, Nicholas, Finn, and Kianna were busy scooping and pouring in the sand table. Sophia: I m making soup. Nicholas: I m making cinnamon tea Finn: I m making ice cream. Emmett, Declan, and Miles were at the woodworking bench and used hammers, screwdrivers, and saws. Nicholas, Leah, and Isabelle are all interested in reading books to the class at Circle Time. Isabelle read Madeleine and Nicholas read What s Inside? WHAT IS A STORY? Finn: A story means there are lots of books in school and at the library. Isabelle: Something that you read and tell someone. You use your eyes to see what you are reading. I can read the Madeleine book. Sophia: It s a thing that you read at school. Emmett: It s something that you read that you want to do before bedtime. Leah: Something you listen with your ears. You listen to your mom not to get off the bed, and just read, read, read. Judy: Can a story be in a movie? Finn: Like fairytales Nicholas: Or about a princess. We had music class and danced and moved and shook shaker eggs to a dinosaur song, a chicken song, and a fish song.
