10 Adding the NEES T-Rex Vibrator to the 2004 NSF-Earthscope Seismic Reflection- Refraction Experiment across the Northwestern Basin-and -Range Transition Zone Principal Investigators: Simon Klemperer & Elizabeth Miller, Stanford University The opportunity for NEES vibrators to contribute to other science: Crustal deep reflection/refraction profiling - there are excellent targets at depth (lower crustal reflectivity, Moho) - unlike explosions, vibrators can be used in built-up areas Shear-wave crustal profiling - explosion sources produce weak shear waves - T-Rex directly generates SV and SH waves to measure crustal anisotropy High-resolution reflection imaging - active faulting - basin velocity structure Demonstrating success in these topics will draw interest from a broad community, promoting wide use of the NEES equipment Geographic Setting: Scientific Purpose: To constrain Moho depth, velocity structure, and reflective character of the crust in the northwestern Basin and Range 10
