1 The 2011 Common Entrance syllabus and Geography ISEB Revision Guide The 2011 Common Entrance syllabus ISEB (the examination board responsible for setting Common Entrance exams) have published a new syllabus for Geography for first examination in Spring This will replace the previous syllabus, published for first examination in Spring Which syllabus should my pupil be following? To determine this you will need to know when your pupil is taking their Common Entrance exam. Exam date 2008 syllabus 2011 syllabus Spring 2010 Summer 2010 Spring 2011 Summer 2011 Spring 2012 Summer 2012 What about the practice papers, published each Autumn? The practice paper from Autumn 2009 follows the old 2008 syllabus. Future Autumn practice papers will follow the new 2011 syllabus. What changes have been made for the 2011 syllabus? There have been several detailed changes to the syllabus, but broadly: The topic of Settlement has been largely removed; The topic of Location Knowledge has been greatly reduced; Certain other smaller deletions have been made to individual topics. A small amount of material has been added. The two syllabuses are available to view at Will there be further changes? ISEB have indicated that, following a cross-subject review of Common Entrance, there may be further changes to the syllabus. These will be examined no earlier than

2 Geography ISEB Revision Guide Galore Park has updated the most recent version of the Revision Guide to reflect these changes. In order to cater for pupils taking either syllabus, the older material has been retained. How does it affect me? If your pupil is taking the 2008 syllabus, then all material in the Geography ISEB Revision Guide is relevant and needs to be learned. There are no further changes you need to make. If your pupil is taking the 2011 syllabus, follow the guidance given below. Which edition do I have? Look on the publisher s page (page ii). The newest version contains the following text: Third edition published February 2008, reprinted May 2008, September 2008, 2009, revised October 2009 The crucial words to look for are revised October If your book includes this, you have the newest version. If your book does not include revised October 2009, you have an older version. My pupil is following the 2011 syllabus and I have a new version Read the information given on page iii. This symbol, [insert 2011 symbol], plus a grey line in the margin, denotes sections that will not be examined. Smaller pieces of text that are no longer relevant are given in italic type. Refer to the table below if you need further guidance on where this material is. You can instruct your pupil to safely ignore this material for the exam, and it may help to draw a line though it to avoid confusion. It will not matter if they have learned this material already, but it is not necessary for the exam. There is a small amount of extra material to be learned for the new syllabus. This is available to download from and relates to changes on pages 15, 71 and 96 of the book. The Location Knowledge maps and blank maps have also been fully updated and are available to download at Refer your pupil to the section The syllabus and your exams on pages 1 and 2, especially the section at the top of page 2 which relates to the 2011 syllabus. 2
