roadmap Earth Science Europe Paris, October 2012 TOPO-EUROPE an integrated solid earth approach to Continental Topography and Deep Earth Surface Processes in 4D Sierd Cloetingh, Sean Willett & TOPO-EUROPE team INTERNATIONAL LITHOSPHERE PROGRAM
Scientific Rationale for TOPO-EUROPE Deep Earth research and Surface studies can both advance more effectively through cross-fertilization: o Deep Earth processes are constrained by surface observations (e.g. geomorphology, sea level records, sedimentary record) o Surface processes require knowledge of deep tectonic forcing of vertical motion (e.g. dynamic topography, fault slip and associated deformation) Advance across disciplinary lines requires multidisciplinary collaboration - through research community awareness and projects conducted by international research teams.
3 TOPO-EUROPE platform phase 1 phase 2 phase TOPO-IBERIA ESF EUROCORES TOPO-EUROPE Initiatives of the ILP regional coordinating committee EUROPE ( TOPO-EUROPE ) EU EPOS-ESFRI Euro-Geosurveys partnership Teaming up with TerMex TopoMod Marie-Curie ITN future networks (e.g. EERA)
ESF EUROCORE TOPO-EUROPE Collaborative Research Projects (CRP s) The natural laboratory working model 4 TOPO-4D Europe NL, N, CH, IT TopoScandiaDeep Scandinavia N, DE, NL TopoMed Mediterranean NL, I, ES, DE, P, IRL VAMP Anatolia DE, NL, SK, TK, IT, CH PYRTEC Pyrenees N, ES, F, NL, UK Source-Sink Pannonian Basin NL,AT,SK,RO,FR,HU,SRB,TK,CH,USA TOPOALPS Alps CH, DE, FR, AT, IT ThermoEurope Europe F, NL,PL, ES,CH,DE,IT,UK SedyMont Laboratory Select regions in Norway Switzerland, Italy Participating Countries CH, IT, UK, NO, AT RESEL-GRACE Europe DE, F, NL 14.5 M, 23 countries involved & 60 new positions for young researchers
Training and Education creating a community Summer Schools, Shortcourses and Fieldtrips: Carpathian-Danube Delta-Black Sea Sedimentary System, Bucharest, Romania, 2009 Modelling Thermochronology Data, Aussois, France, 2009 Modelling Surface Processes on Geological Timescales, Davos, Switzerland, 2010 Detecting Landscape Change, Loen, Norway, 2010 Fieldtrip: Interactions between deep-seated and surficial processes: the Anatolian Plateau, Turkey, 2011 Geodynamic Modeling of Lithosphere Deformation Zurich, Switzerland, 2011 TOPO-Europe Young Researchers Workshops 2011 Bratislava, Slovakia 2012 Utrecht, Netherlands
What has worked value added from multi-national effort Collaboration CRPs have brought together international groups, encouraged (forced) collaboration, facilitated cross-border projects. Training over 60 students and postdocs have participated in projects, shortcourses, workshops, fieldtrips creating a new cohort Community Building large number of senior and junior scientists have focussed on single research problem met, discussed, networked Infrastructure laid groundwork for future sharing and dissemination of data and instruments culture of sharing and collaboration
The TOPO-Europe Model Past, Present and Future This is a model that WORKS for the earth sciences, where large, international field experiments and multidisciplinary teams are essential
The TOPO-Europe Model Past, Present and Future Provide a Research Platform Inclusive bring individual researchers and projects into single community Provide cohort for young researchers Assist in finding collaborators in other fields or countries Assist development in research immature countries Work through Natural Laboratory Model Use geographical setting to pose the problems Invite researchers to bring diverse tools Encourage multidisciplinary approach Large-scale geophysical experiments as core of broader effort Work through international, multi-disciplinary collaborations Achieve the right mix of people and expertise to advance the science Match tools to the problems Connect centers of excellence from across Europe
What Do We Need for the Future? Continued Network and Interaction Support Periodic, predictable meetings, workshops, courses for community building Funding Vehicle for International Projects Multi-year, multi-investigator, multi-disciplinary projects Multiple calls (not one-time funding opportunities) Integration of large-scale geophysical experiments with other sciences Long-Term Observatories Establish long-standing (decadal) observatories monitoring mass fluxes, tectonic, climatic and surface process rates Key focus areas for new technologies and long-term data collection Community Facilities Shared, networked or accessible facilities for geophysical instrumentation, geochronology, signal processing, numerical and analogue modeling, remote sensing, LIDAR, InSAR, etc.
How do we get there? Currently a science committee is formulating a new science plan for TOPO-EUROPE 2020 Representatives from ~20 countries participating in discussions and tasked to organize national committees to push for national participation Propose a JPI to address research needs
Scientific Future for TOPO-EUROPE Examples of problems cutting across disciplines: Geomorphology of active landscapes contain the history of surface faulting and other tectonic deformation Formation of long-wavelength topography and sedimentary basins on stable continents are evidence of dynamic topography resulting from mantle flow and plate boundary processes Changing coastlines and water depth record sealevel change and thus fingerprint Quaternary ice volume and distribution Changes in fluvial sedimentation reflect climatic forcing such as monsoonal changes in India or Africa affecting ecosystems and even early civilization Rates of chemical weathering and biogeochemical cycles govern the long-term carbon cycle and nutrients but are linked to physical erosion with complex feedback paths Societal Relevance: Natural hazards such as landslides, floods, and debris flows are driven by rates of surface processes and the rate of their tectonic drivers Geomorphology, surficial geology and syntectonic sediments are key tools in studies of other natural hazards including earthquakes and tsunamis Chemical weathering, mass transport and physical erosion are linked to the long-term carbon cycle and understanding of the climate system The physical environment is directly connected to the development of civilization through land productivity, sensitivity to climate change and rates of landscape and ecological change
