3 PROBLEM SOLUTION The International Association of Volcanology and Chemistry of the Earth s Interior (IAVCEI) has named various dangerous volcanoes in the world due to latest eruptions.there are no informative applications that explain general information about volcanoes. There is a lack of consistent and easy to understand information about volcanoes. Most of the websites and resources give decent overviews about volcanoes. They are often heavy in text, lack quality illustrations, interactive graphics and animations that visually show how the volcano works, and the anatomy of the volcanoes. A volcano guide that is interactive and accessible in digital form. The guide will provide a list of essential information related to volcanoes to educate the users. The list includes: types of volcanoes, eruptions, and the simple guide of anatomy of the volcano. The app will implement intriguing illustrations to catch the user s attention. The app will not only implement an easy navigation system to assist children to learn, but also inspire them. 1

5 COMPETITIVE ANALYSIS 1. STATIC INFOGRAPHICS There are numerous static infographics that educate and inform people about volcanoes, earthquacks, and etc. The style of the infographic usually introduces 3D anatomy structure displays with heavy text based info on the side. 2. VOLCANOES Volcanoes is an app that includes a map, alerts, news, recent earthquakes, and ash Info. The app displays the information in a list form and the flat mapping display. 3

6 COMPETITIVE ANALYSIS Flat design is about taking away the visual extras and only displaying the elements with asthetics. This allows the design to speak for itself. Subtle gradients and dropshadow were added to give the design a more visual appeal with a feeling that the design is two-dimensional. 4

7 USER PERSONA TOMMY MCADAMS I am a winner. I want to win. I want to be the smartest and the coolest winner. ABOUT USER Tommy is an 8 year old boy who goes to school in Culver, Indiana. His favorite acitvity is soccer and anything outdoor. His favorite food is pulled pork sandwiches and jumbo shrimp. MOTIVATION Tommy is at the top of his class. He loves to read and learn new things. He is beyond brilliant and an over achiever. He aims to participate in the science fair and produce an award winning project. He has always been fascinated with volcanoes and how volcanoes erupt. After days of struggling he has decided that he is going to do a project on volcanoes. 8 USER PERSONA MIKEY RICHARDS I want to find a easy way to showcase basic info about volcanoes for my students. ABOUT USER Mikey is a hot-blooded and passionate elementary school teacher at Hillsborough, New Jersey. He is an expert on technology. He loves cats and instagram photography. MOTIVATION Mikey is passionate about teaching. He believed that teaching was his calling since the age of 16, and he has been striving to be a great teacher ever since. Michael is the type of teacher that will put his students before everything else. He believes that education is the most powerful weapon that we can use to change the world. He always strives to find the best teaching method to deliver the material. A volcano is a mountain that opens downward towards a pool of magma below the surface of the earth. CINDER COMPOSITE VOLCANO MODEL EXPLORE SHIELD CALDERA Landing page Informative landing page. There will be a brief introduction about volcanoes and the app. Users will have a choice to learn more about the volcanoes or explore the volcanoes around the world. Volcano Types The app brings users to the volcano page to learn about four different types of volcanoes after the user clicked on learn more. 11

That pressure can gradually fracture the rock around it, creating outlets for the magma. COMPOSITE VOLCANO Conical volcano built up by many layers of hardened lava, tephra and volcanic ash COMPOSITE VOLCANO Conical volcano built up by many layers of hardened lava, tephra and volcanic ash Specific Type of Volcano: Composite Users can begin to explore the sturcture of the volcano and its eruption process. Users can drag the slider to explore the anatomy of the volcano. When selecting a specific eruption type, a short animation will be played on the screen. The short description of the volcano type will be displayed at all times on the bottom of the app. Specific Type of Volcano: Learn More The highlighted circles are hidden information about volcano structure. When selected, the highlighted circle enlarges and a smaller window will pop up to bring up a description of the selected structure. 12

When the pin drop is selected, a small window will pop up to reveal the name and a picture of the volcano. Famous Volcano: Mount Fuji Showcasing one of the most famous volcanoes in the world. Users will learn various information about the specific volcano: location, status, prominence, elevation, last eruption and ranking. Users can also explore the anatomy and the structure of the volcano by dragging the slider left and right. 13
