1 P.O. Box COLUMBUS, OHIO An Affiliate (1963) of the Association of Petroleum Geologists (AAPG). The Newsletter of the Ohio Geological Society June, 1998 I President's President - William A. Rike VPresident - Amy L. Burke Secretary - Steve P. Zody Treasurer - Daniel E. HaIl Comments... This is my last crack at presidential notes, now being written in a profound state of lameduckness. And I was so absolutely certain I ' would get reelected. I guess you never bet on a sure thing. You know that I did this Presidential tour in also, so I' mworking on a sixteen year cycle. Watch for me in 2013! P.O. Box 763, Worthington, P.O. Box 14981, Columbus, P.O. Box 921, Wooster, 1927 Tamarack, Newark, OH (614) OH (614) OH (330) OH (740) Arie Janssens saw to it that our annual fall conference was delivered once again to an appreciative audience. This event has become a standard item and probably does more to benefit the Society and the oil and gas geology crowd than anything else we do. Everyone has a great time at this. On the bright side, the Society came out way ahead with a great bunch of new officers, an equal blend of grizzled veterans (excuse me, Amy, "seasoned") and new faces. Please welcome Amy Burke (prez), Steve Zody (VP), the ubiquitous John Forman (See) and Jim McDonald (Treas). The old officers worked well together, had something of a routine and a handful of good ideas they were working on. I know that John and Jim will bring in some fresh ideas and keep things from getting out of hand. I would be remiss if I did not acknowledge a few other people that helped keep the Society humming along. Stephanie Bailey kept the newsletter rolling out on prompt one-month intervals. No small undertaking. She also worked on the new Society directory along with Lisa Van Doren and Joe Wells from the Ohio Geological Survey. The directories should be available the end of this month. Pete MacKenzie recognized the benefit of getting the Society registered as a publisher with the Library of Congress, thereby considerably expanding our ability to market our publications. Thanks, Pete. Let me make two last passes. Throughout the year, we have enjoyed excellent working relationships with both the Ohio Geological Survey and the Ohio Oil and Gas Association. Their help has been subtle, behind-the-scenes stuff that has made us look good and our tasks easy. Big, big thanks to Tom Berg and his crew, and Tom Stewart and his staff. HAVE A GREAT SUMMER!!!!
2 ARIE JANSSENS RECEIVES HONORARY LIFE MEMBERSHIP From time to time we recognize that one of our members has made unusually generous contributions of time and effort to the Society and geology as a whole. This year we availed ourselves of the opportunity and, at the May 28th joint meeting hosted by the Ohio Geological Society and the Society of Professional Well Log Analysts in Cambridge, presented Arie Janssens with Honorary membership in front of a crowd of nearly fifty. First, one has to know the crowd. Arie managed this by taking a position as geologist for the Geological Survey's Subsurface section in This came on the tail of the Morrow County boom, but it gave him an introduction to those whose lives revolved around Ohio's subsurface geology. By 1971, Arie was head of the Survey's Subsurface Section, a post he retained until going into private practice in Perhaps Arie's most lasting contribution to the State's geology is the Ohio Geological Survey's 1973 Bulletin 64, "The Stratigraphy of the Cambrian and Lower Ordovician Rocks in Ohio". An extension of his doctoral work at Ohio State University, Bulletin 64 was a landmark work that in the past 25 years has simply become known as "Janssens book." Its value as a framework for stratigraphic nomenclature and rock description remains undiminished today. If you are like me, you recognized its value right off and had its original soft cover format hardbound. For the Society itself, Arie has been an ever-present force, gently counseling and advising in the most professional manner. The enormously successful Akron- Canton Symposiums held by the Society every fall were at Arie's suggestion and guidance. His annual listing of hydrocarbon production from Cambro-Ordovician strata around the State has become a staple of information to those in the oil and gas industry. And for those of us who know Arie well, there is always his personal pet project-of-the-year in the works, typically a careful dissection of the structure and stratigraphy of one chosen county - and as soon as it is finished, its available to us all. And people are in awe of that electric bunny! From all of us in the Ohio Geological Society, congratulations all you have done on our behalf. and thanks for Bill Rike

5 Eastern Section AAPG Meeting - Columbus, Ohio - October 7-10, Field Trips will be offered for Saturday, October 10 th FIELD TRIP TO THE SERPENT MOUND DISTURBANCE IN SOUTHERN OHIO The Serpent Mound disturbance is a circular to ovoid, 4.5-mile-diameter, structurally deformed area in southern Ohio. The origin of the Serpent Mound disturbance is the subject of much debate. Some believe it to be of a cryptoexplosive nature; others maintain it is the result of meteor impact; still others are convinced that a combination of geologic phenomena is responsible for the present-day structure. Lively discussions will be encouraged. The disturbance can be divided into three structural units: a central uplifted area of Ordovician and Silurian rocks; a transition area; and an outer ring graben of Silurian, Devonian, and Mississippian rocks. This trip will start in Columbus and traverse glaciated central Ohio to the western portion of the Appalachian Plateau in southern Ohio, where the disturbance is located. We will look at Silurian, Devonian, and Mississippian rocks in the outer ring graben and strongly deformed Ordovician and Silurian rocks and brecciated zones in the central uplifted area. Geophysical data (seismic, gravity, magnetic) and core samples from the area also will be displayed to show the relationships between surface and subsurface data. We will have a box lunch picnic at the Serpent Mound Archaeological site, from which the disturbance takes its name. Portions of this trip will be strenuous and require hard-sole boots. Tentative itinerary: leave Columbus 8 a.m. and return to Columbus by 5:30 p.m.. Field Trip Leaders: Mark Baranoski and Scott Brockman - Ohio Geological Survey FIELD TRIP TO COLLECT FOSSILS AT THE SYLVANIA QUARRY IN NORTHWESTERN OHIO This field trip provides the opportunity to collect fossils at the Sylvania Quarry, owned by the France Stone Company. This quarry is one of Ohios' best known and most profusely fossiliferous exposures of the Middle Devonian-age Silica Formation. This trip is one of the first opportunities in many years that allows a group of geologists into the quarry for collecting. The Silica shale contains numerous brachiopods, bryozoans, criniods, corals, and the prized trilobite Phacops rana as well as many other fauna: In addition, dipping beds caused by the Lucas County Monocline (associated with the Bowling Green Fault) are well exposed in the quarry walls. This trip will start in Columbus and traverse glaciated west-central Ohio to the lake plains of northwestern Ohio. Sylvania quarry is located west of Toledo, which is a 2.5-hour bus ride (one way) from Columbus. Transportation, box lunch, refreshments, and hardhats will be provided. Anyone having a hardhat is requested to bring it. Tentative itinerary: leave Columbus 8 a.m. and return to Columbus by 5:30 p.m. Field Trip Leaders: Mac Swinford and Ron Rea - Ohio Geological Survey, Scott Kell - Ohio Division of Oil and Gas
