4 OCEANIC - excellent protection OCEANIC is an excellent, self-polishing antifouling that is selfsmoothening, 2003-compliant and TBT-free. Its revolutionary fibre-reinforced composite structure provides excellent mechanical strength, while at the same time improving the level of polishing control. OCEANIC thus ensures optimum protection under normal fouling conditions. OCEANIC can be specified for up to 36 months on vertical sides and for up to 60 months on flat bottoms. Fibre technology HEMPEL maintains a constant focus on new technologies, not least to ensure full compliance with the demands of future legislation. The fibre technology used in OCEANIC antifouling is a result of ongoing research and development work and HEMPEL holds a worldwide patent for this unique solution. The strength of fibre-reinforced materials when used in yacht hulls, car fenders, tennis rackets, fishing rods and similar items is well known and much appreciated. Using microfibres to reinforce antifouling coatings is revolutionary and results in a very strong and flexible paint film. Incorporating such fibres into rosin-based antifoulings not only enables us to add greater amounts of rosin, thus improving the level of polishing control. It also provides full benefit from the hydrolysable zinc carboxylate polymer salt binder technology. This means that HEMPEL can provide products with a range of different polishing rates. The traditional trade-off between polishing performance and mechanical strength in products based on natural gum rosin therefore no longer applies. All OCEANIC products feature excellent mechanical strength and the same ease of application. Binder alternative to natural rosin A key ingredient in the old types of TBT-free antifouling paints is rosin, which is a natural product. The main and most important advantage of rosin is that it has the right degree of solubility in sea water to control the polishing of the formulated product. This means that it is possible to provide products with excellent polishing properties. However, because of impurities and the brittle nature of natural rosin, only limited amounts can be added before the mechanical properties of the paint are affected which results in cracking and peeling between layers. Natural rosin contains impurities that vary from one tree its natural source to another, depending on the soil and weather conditions. However, HEMPEL removes these impurities from OCEANIC products. The problem of brittleness is solved by combining the purified rosin with fibres. Controlled polishing Due to their excellent self-polishing and self-smoothening properties, OCEANIC antifouling products do not build up an excessive leached matrix. The OCEANIC range of antifouling products complies fully with the new regulations introduced in These products are also designed to provide a versatile range of answers to the different needs of modern vessels. They are suitable for use in all common combinations of vessel speed and types of operation.

6 Low level of volatile organic compounds OCEANIC features a very high level of solids (56-57%). This corresponds to a Volatile Organic Compound (VOC) content of less than 400 g/litre. This high volume of solids compares very favourably with other TBT-free products currently available. In addition, using OCEANIC products gives 40% lower emission of solvents into the atmosphere compared with a product that only contains 40% of solids by volume. Will comply with IMO resolution In October 2001, the International Maritime Organization (IMO) adopted a resolution making it illegal to apply or re-apply antifouling paints that contain TBT or other organotin compounds. When this resolution comes into effect, the OCEANIC range of antifouling products will be fully compliant. OCEANIC applied during maintenance drydocking for 18 months service time. The key is the unique combination of microfibres and advanced technology binders. It is also possible to use OCEANIC products for overcoating other types of antifouling. OCEANIC is compatible with most brands of TBT-based antifoulings, and all other HEMPEL TBT-free antifouling systems (including GLOBIC and OLYMPIC) without the use of a tie coat. This is a major advantage compared with TBT-free antifouling systems supplied by other manufacturers, as some products require such a tie coat to avoid absorption of binder and active ingredients into the old antifouling system. 7 Cost-effective underneath Getting to the bottom of it all Saves time and paint in dry-dock Better operating figures With the OCEANIC range of products, HEMPEL has created a self-polishing, self-smoothening antifouling that can be applied over existing HEMPEL antifoulings and all commonly known TBT-based antifoulings. OCEANIC can be specified for up to 36 months on vertical sides and for up to 60 months on flat bottoms. This makes OCEANIC a natural choice because of the reduced fuel consumption when the vessel is in operation. OCEANIC products are easy to apply, and do not need a tie coat when recoating is necessary. All these factors contribute to significant savings. Low paint consumption OCEANIC has a high volume solids level (56-57%). This must be considered when comparing the new technologies associated with TBT-free antifoulings, where specifications are often similar. For example, the total paint volume of OCEANIC is nearly 30% less than the total paint volume needed for a product with 40% of solids by volume and the same DFT specification.
