1 Kelly Nieforth Economic Development Manager City of Oshkosh 215 Church Avenue Oshkosh, W August 31, 2018 RE: Update #9: August 1 to 31, 2018 Archaeological Data Recovery at the Golf Course Site (47WN0049) Dear Ms. Nieforth, Archaeological investigations continued during August 2018, implementing the Archaeological Data Recovery Plan for the Golf Course Site (47WN0049), City of Oshkosh, Winnebago County. This document provides a summary of the laboratory investigations conducted in August 2018 and planned tasks for September Work Conducted in August 2018 Activities this month consisted of laboratory processing and preliminary cultural material analyses. Laboratory investigations included: (1) burial feature descriptions and cultural materials, (2) flotation and waterscreening, (3) inventory of artifacts, (4) analysis of human remains, (5) analysis of faunal remains, (6) analysis of lithics, and (7) analysis of pottery. Progress in each of these five categories is described below. Digitization of Field Records and Feature Attribute Analysis Digitization of scanned feature plan and profile drawings was completed this month. A total of 99 prehistoric cultural features were digitally drawn during this process. These drawing are then used to map the features in ArcGS (Attachment 1) and assist in feature attribute analysis (Attachment 2). The recording of feature attributes has been completed for all of features identified at the site. The features include seven historic/modern features and 99 features associated with the prehistoric American ndian occupation of the site. The seven historic/modern features are identified based on the occurrence of wood planking, square cut and wire nails, and flat glass. The prehistoric features have been further categorized based on the shape of the profile into several classes: small cylindrical (14), small basins (3), medium cylindrical (2), medium basin (15), large cylindrical (5), large basin (29), and large shallow basin (31). The designation of cylindrical in the profile classes are features that have
2 vertical, or straight walls. The basin designation are features with sloping, or curving walls. Small features are those that are less than 40 cm in length. Medium features range from 40 to 79 cm in length, and large features range from 80 cm to 250 cm in length. Digitized drawings of features exemplifying these classes are provided in Attachment 2. Functional interpretation of feature will be completed after all cultural materials have been processed and analyzed. Flotation and Water Screening Flotation uses jets of water to cause light weight materials in soil samples, such as preserved botanical remains, to float to the surface of the water while heavier materials, like lithics, ceramics, and bone, remain in the tank screen, and the soil sinks to the bottom of the tank. A total of 506 bags of flotation samples from 108 lots were collected in the field. All the flotation bags have been processed. A total 5200 liters of flotation samples was processed. After flotation, the dried yields are placed in clean, glass jars for further sorting and analysis. After jarring, the heavy fraction samples are sorted into the same material type categories as the artifacts recovered in the field and bagged separately. Thus far, 67 lots (62%) have been completely sorted. All of the flotation samples selected to be waterscreened have been processed and are awaiting further sorting and inventory. nventory of Artifacts All 335 non-flotation artifact lots have been inventoried. A summary of the inventoried artifacts is included in Table 1. The inventory provides an initial sort and examination of artifacts prior to the more in-depth artifact analysis. Analysis of Human Remains Human remains were recovered from four features during field investigations. The skeletal analysis, following the procedures and guidelines of the Wisconsin Historical Society, is currently in progress. The draft report regarding the human burial features and osteological analysis will be submitted to the Wisconsin Historical by January Analysis of Faunal Remains The analysis of faunal remains (animal bone) from dry screen contexts was previously completed in July Analysis of Pottery The analysis of pottery sherds from dry screen contexts was completed in August. The pottery analyst identifies and sorts the pottery sherds by various attributes: vessel location (rim, body, and basal sherds), temper (materials such as crushed rock referred to as grit, limestone, or shell added to strengthen the clay during production), surface treatment, and decorations. All sherds are counted and weighed. UWM-CRM Update #9-August 31, 2018 Page 2
3 dentification of individual vessels are determined utilizing the various attributes. Pottery attributes changed over time and are used as time period indicators. Eleven pottery vessels from burial features, non-burial features, and shovel tests have been identified. The majority of the vessels are grit-tempered with cordmarked exterior surfaces. Decoration on the vessels consist of cord impressions, punctates, as well as incised and trailed lines. Upcoming Tasks We will continue with the laboratory investigations during September Tasks include sorting and inventorying processed flotation and waterscreened samples and commencing analysis of prehistoric pottery, lithic artifacts, and floral remains recovered from flotation and waterscreen processing. will continue to provide you with an update on our progress on a monthly basis. You may expect our next update at the end of September As always, if there are questions or concerns regarding the project, please do not hesitate to contact me at (414) or at haasjr@uwm.edu.
