1 May-June 2009 Volume 5, Issue 3 Geophysical Society of Kansas PRESIDENT S MESSAGE In this issue: Program Chairman s Column GSK Membership 3 GSK Council 3 GSK Committees 3 Crew Tracker 4 Professional Directory 8 GSK Advertising Rates 2 15 Our Geophysical Society of Kansas has now been in existence for four years, and my term as President will be ended shortly and new officers will be filling leadership positions on June 1. It has been enjoyable serving you and the society these past two years. I would like to thank the others who served on our council, namely: Bob Francis (Secretary), Susan Nissen (Treasurer), Rick Miller (Editor), Jim Womble (Council Advisor), and Dennis Hedke as Past-President and Counselor. Mr. Hedke, who graciously filled in as President-Elect after Mike Crouch s untimely passing, has handled the duties of Vice-President, and has secured some very good speakers for technical papers. I also want to thank Mary Brohammer, who works very diligently assembling our excellent newsletter. I also want to recognize Mike Crouch, who we miss greatly, and who was instrumental in the formation of this organization. Without these members who give their time and labor to this society, this society would be non-existent. We are currently assembling a slate of officers to fill the positions for the Council, and still need a couple of individuals that are willing to give some of their time to our organization. Please give this request thoughtful consideration. The GSKS is now in the process of distributing monies for scholarships for the academic sessions. The council has approved an amount of $6000 to be distributed to deserving senior or graduate students enrolled in geophysical studies at Kansas universities. As part of the scholarship program, this year we are providing $1000 to the Michael L. Crouch Memorial Scholarship at Wichita State University. Applications for the scholarships were to be submitted by April 30, and the scholarships will be distributed by May 31. This scholarship program is made possible through generous sponsorship of advertising space in our newsletter by companies. Please consider these companies when you need acquisition, processing, or data brokerage services! Rick Saenger Web Address

2 Page 2 Program Chairman s Column The GSKS enjoyed a presentation on March 19, given by Bill Wepfer of Echo Geophysical, Denver, entitled Two F s Make An A! High Performance Prospecting with FreqEnhance & Flexbinning. He aptly demonstrated the marked improvement on multiple datasets via applications of this technology. The GSKS was provided an additional interesting paper on April 9, given by Morgan Brown, Wave Imaging Technology, Houston, who presented a paper entitled Wave Equation Simulation, Depth Imaging, and Velocity Analysis Over Shallow Salt. Given challenges we face in many Kansas areas with respect to salt deposition, this talk provided insight that may be helpful to explorationists attempting to image in proximity to such highly variable subsurface environments. We have received confirmation from SEG that our Society has been placed in the itinerary of Bill Goodway, who has been selected as an SEG Honorary Lecturer for the Fall He will be visiting the GSKS on October 8, his talk is highlighted below, so mark your calendars now. If you are aware of talks that would be of interest to the Geophysical Society of Kansas, please contact Dennis Hedke at dhedke@hs-geo.com or We will be on summer break until the fall season resumes. We hope you have an enjoyable summer, and that if you travel, you make your way safely and without incident. We will have additional information about the fall schedule in our next issue, on or about July 1. Dennis Hedke Technical Program Chairman Program Abstract The Magic of Lamé 2009 Honorary Lecturer, North America rock will deform volumetrically as a function of the bulk modulus, or longitudinally as a function of Young s modulus... Bill Goodway Seismic Analysis Advisor EnCana Corporation, Canada The most common parameters measurable in seismology are VP and VS, being the propagation velocities of compressional P-waves and shear S- waves in elastic media. However, these measured quantities are composed of the more fundamental rock parameters of density and two moduli termed lambda (λ) and mu (μ), introduced and named after the 18th century French engineer, mathematician, and elastician Gabriel Lamé. Lamé also formulated the modern version of Hooke s law relating stress to strain in its general tensor form, thereby creating the basis for the science of materials, including rocks. Interestingly and most notably, only Lamé s moduli λ and μ appear in Hooke s law and not Young s modulus, the bulk modulus, or any other common modulus. The application of seismology to measure or describe rocks and fluids is based on the physics used to derive propagation Continued on p. 5

These wave equations equate Hooke s law, providing the Lamé moduli, to Newton s second law that provides density and their solutions form the basis for AVO used to describe attributes of the propagating medium. The result gives relations between propagation velocity VP and VS and the intuitively simple Lamé moduli of incompressibility, λ, and rigidity, μ. Consequently λ and μ afford the most fundamental and orthogonal parameterization of elastic seismic waves to extract information about rocks within the Earth. The historical development of seismology at widely different scales has led to the use of a large and confusing array of parameters, which are usually complicated functions of the Lamé moduli. This includes Poisson s ratio, Young s and the bulk modulus, as well as standard AVO attributes such as intercept and gradient, that arise as a result of the media s form and its measurement environment. For example, the same rock will deform volumetrically as a function of the bulk modulus, or longitudinally as a function of Young s modulus, or as a function of the nameless P- wave propagation modulus (λ + 2μ) in the Earth. Extracting the Lamé moduli from these mixed parameters provides insight into their physical meaning, because Lamé moduli are intrinsic and invariant properties of elastic media. Examples of this from the fields of earthquake seismology, AVO, and passive microseismology will be presented.
