1 July-August 2011 Volume 7, Issue 4 Geophysical Society of Kansas PRESIDENT S MESSAGE In this issue: GSK Council Meeting Minutes GSK Council 3 GSK Membership 3 GSK Committees 3 Crew Tracker 4 Professional Directory 6 GSK Advertising Rates Web Address Let me begin with: It is my pleasure to serve the GSK as President for the next two years. A little about me: May of 1964 was my beginning in geophysics working with a couple of the early pioneers in seismic acquisition as we now know it: Jay Miller of Globe Exploration and Scott Petty of Petty Geophysical Engineering. I also worked with Pan American Petroleum (Amoco), GTS Corp. Then I founded Seismic Reflections, Inc. I have worked as a Geophysical Consultant since 1995 out of Houston, Texas. I have spent most of my time the last six years supervising and/or Quality Control with crews in Kansas. Also member of: SEG, AAPG, GSH, and HGS. Introducing the rest of your new Council officers for : Vice-President Hendratta Ali Hendratta Ali received BS, MS, and DEA (post graduate) degrees from University of Yaounde I Yaounde, Cameroon, and a PhD from Oklahoma State University. Previously worked for more than 2 years as an environmental geologist/pedologist for a multinational pipeline construction project and geophysicist for Allied Energy Corporation in Houston, TX. She is currently an Assistant Professor of Geosciences, Petroleum Geology Program, at Fort Hays State University. Her research interests are stable isotope modeling, aqueous geochemistry, geophysics, and seismic modeling Secretary George Tsoflias Received a BS (1989) and MS (1991) in geophysics from Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University, and a PhD (1999) in geological sciences from The University of Texas at Austin. He worked as a geophysicist for Mobil Oil (1991 to 1995, offshore Gulf of Mexico), Jones Energy Ltd. (1996 to 1998, Texas Panhandle and Oklahoma) and for the U.S. Department of the Interior (1999 to 2003, offshore Gulf of Mexico). In 2003 he joined The University of Kansas, Department of Geology, where he is currently an associate professor. Tsoflias research interests include the development of high-resolution seismic and ground-penetrating radar methods for characterization of near-surface anisotropy and its effect on the fluid-flow properties of geologic formations. His current work focuses on geophysical imaging of hydrocarbon reservoir analogues and the characterization of natural fractures. Treasurer John Hastings Graduated from Wichita State University with a BS in Geology and minor in Math. Has worked in the Petroleum Industry since Currently employed at Lario Oil & Gas Company as a Division Geologist for the Mid-Continent Region. Is a member of the AAPG, KGS, SEG, RMAG, and GSK. Editor Rick Miller Rick Miller is a senior scientist at the Kansas Geological Survey, a research and service division of the University of Kansas (KU), and is a courtesy associate professor of geology at KU. He holds degrees from Benedictine College (BA), the University of Kansas (MS) and the University of Leoben (PhD). His scientific interests focus on the application of shallow, high-resolution seismic methods to a wide assortment of problems ranging from energy to engineering to the environment. He has published more than 85 refereed journal articles and a half-dozen book chapters. In closing: Thanks to ALL that keep the GSK working. Best Regards, George Dallas III
2 Page 2 GSK Council Meeting Minutes June 15, 2011, via Conference Call, 10am CDT Officers Present Outgoing: Susan Nissen, President Rick Saenger, Past President Spencer Musgrove, Treasurer Jim Womble, Advisor Samantha Reid, Secretary Incoming: George Dallas III, President Hendratta Ali, Vice-President George Tsoflias, Secretary John Hastings, Treasurer Officers not Present: Rick Miller, Editor Susan Nissen welcomed the new Council and introduced its members: George Dallas III, President, Reflections Inc. Hendratta Ali, Vice-President, Fort Hays State University Susan Nissen, Past President, Geophysical Consultant George Tsoflias, Secretary, The University of Kansas John Hastings, Treasurer, Lario Oil & Gas Company Rick Miller, Editor, Kansas Geological Survey Secretary s Report Voted on and approved April 29, 2011 meeting minutes as posted in the newsletter. Motion to approve the minutes was made by H. Ali, seconded by G. Dallas III. All members were in favor, none opposed. Treasurer s Report S. Musgrove ed officers a copy of the treasurer s report with a summary of year-to-date transactions (2/4/11 6/14/11). Beginning balance for the period was $ and ending balance $ Spenser also distributed the list of transactions (6/1/2010 5/31/2011). Total income for the year was $23, and expenses $24, A larger number of student scholarships were awarded this year due to increased income and higher account balance. S. Nissen commented that the GSK is registered as a not-for-profit corporation in the state of Kansas. However, GSK does not have federal tax exempt status and it is required to file a U.S. Corporation Income Tax Return. The organization tries to keep annual net earnings close to zero to avoid tax liability. GSK has not yet applied for tax exempt status as either a 501 (c)(6) business league or 501 (c)(3) charitable organization with the IRS primarily due to the fact that the advertising income (which is currently the main source of income) would most likely be treated as "unrelated business income" and would still be taxable. Susan will send copies of GSK by-laws to the new council and will pass along the articles of incorporation. Editor s Report R. Miller was out of town. S. Nissen provided to the new council information about the GSK newsletter: Publish meeting minutes in the newsletter; Include technical papers from the 2010 GSK Symposium; Newsletter editorial support will continue to be provided by Mary Brohammer, Kansas Geological Survey. Vice President s Report The vice-resident is GSK s technical program coordinator. Any suggestions and information about potential speakers forward to H. Ali. President s Report Outgoing president S. Nissen welcomed incoming president G. Dallas III and the rest of the Council and thanked them for volunteering to serve the GSK. Continued on p. 8
