Interdependence of the world s natural and cultural diversity. It represents the universal values for which the Convention stands. While the central square symbolizes the results of human skill and inspiration, the circle celebrates the gifts of nature. The emblem is round, like the world, a symbol of global protection for the heritage of all humankind.

isimangaliso catchment areas The Umfolozi catchment area is larger than the catchment area of all the rivers that enter St Lucia
In the 1930s the sugar farming industry drained the Umfolozi swamps. The canals carried sediments to the mouth rather than letting them be caught by the swamp.
Now the sediments pass straight down the canals to be deposited at the St Lucia Mouth

Since the 1950s the management objective since then has been to keep the St Lucia and Umfolozi Mouths separate. This means the loss of fresh water.
