1 Workshop Interna9onal Workshop on Geotourism & Geoparks FACET is joining with the Australian Geoparks Network to hold an InternaConal Workshop on Geotourism & Geoparks. Geotourism is essencally geological tourism. The tourism element of geotourism includes tourists visicng, learning from, appreciacng and engaging in geosites. A Geopark is a naconally protected area containing a number of geological heritage sites. They have been established to create employment opportunices & foster economic benefits for local communices through the development of sustainable tourism. 2 Forum Thursday, 26 May 2011 Na9onal Landscapes & Geoparks Ross MacCulloch Chair Great South West Edge NaConal Landscape (WA) Joane McKnight Coordinator Kanawinka Global Geopark (Vic & SA) NaConal Landscapes are united by their topography and their environmental or cultural significance. When developed and managed in a sustainable way, tourism within these Landscapes can deliver a number of valuable benefits to the region: socially, environmentally and economically. The NaConal Landscapes Program is jointly managed by Tourism Australia and Parks Australia. There are now twelve NaConal Landscapes, three of which are in Western Australia. They are The Kimberley, Ningaloo Shark Bay, and the Great South West Edge. A Geopark is a naconally protected area containing a number of sites of geological heritage which is managed sustainably in order to achieve conservacon, social and economic outcomes. The Global Geoparks Network is an inicacve of UNESCO. There are now 77 Global Geoparks in 25 countries including one in Australia, Kanawinka in South Western Victoria and South Eastern South Australia. This forum sets out to explore the similarices and differences between the two programs and leads into FACET s Interna9onal Workshop on Geotourism and Geoparks being held the following day.
