Borchert Map Library, University Libraries, University of Minnesota Subject liaison to the Department of Geography, Environment and Society and the MGIS program; conduct detailed research and interpretation in support of requests from researchers, students, faculty and citizens; build and manage the library collections in the subject areas of geography, maps, GIS and cartography; integrate library resources into the curriculum by working with faculty to provide instruction sessions for classes, including Geography, Landscape Architecture, Urban Studies, and History; develop, maintain, and promote services and resources that benefit the broader community. Project Coordinator for the Mapping Prejudice Project collaboration between the Map Library and Historyapolis to map racially restrictive deed covenants throughout Minneapolis. Supervise and direct the work of the graduate research assistant acting as Project Lead; direct the work of the Historical Researcher & Outreach Coordinator; secure funding. Project Lead for the BTAA Geospatial Data Project lead author for the project proposal. Supervise the work of the Spatial Data Analyst & Curator and BTAA Geospatial Project Metadata Coordinator; ensure metadata integration and workflow collaboration between 12 BTAA institutions; launched the BTAA Geoportal in August 2016; coordinate the strategic planning efforts for future work. Collaborated with CIC colleagues to promote CIC-wide initiative related to geospatial information and research. Outcome was a white paper, a meeting of geospatial librarians prior to the CIC Annual Conference in May 2012 and ongoing partnerships to promote geospatial awareness and research. Eventually resulted in the BTAA Geospatial Data Project. Campus History Project applied and received funding for a project to use digitized historic campus maps to create an interactive online map with historical building footprints, maps, aerial photography, and building photographs. 2 Member, U-Spatial Data Core ( ). Provided expertise in the areas of data management & access and preservation; coordinated with U-Spatial staff to provide service to students, faculty, and researchers. Set up an atlas and sheet map approval program with East View Geospatial to allow for a more efficient and streamlined process of acquiring new cartographic materials. Supervised the digitization and georeferencing of 17,000 aerial photographs for addition to the Minnesota Historical Aerial Photographs Online tool. Supervised and managed the addition of materials to the Map Library collection, including: 7,600 additional maps from the backlog, 32,000 aerial photographs from a DNR donation, and 82,000 aerial photographs from a MNDOT donation. Completed title-level cataloging for all sets in the Foreign Topographic collection (previously uncataloged). 4/2007 9/2010 Library Assistant, John R. Borchert Map Library, University Libraries, University of Minnesota Worked with Technical Services staff and other library staff members interested in Map Cataloging issues to establish a process to expedite the cataloging of the Map Library s estimated 50,000 sheet backlog. Coordinated and participated in the processing of approximately 25,000 thematic maps including: over 1,000 items encapsulated for preservation, over 6,100 items cataloged and added to the collection, approximately 8,000 additional items prepared for cataloging, approximately 250 duplicate maps sent to other U.S. academic libraries for their collections, and approximately 10,000 duplicate items discarded. Oversaw the processing of approximately 15,000 topographic maps, including a comparison against our holdings and condition checks to ensure the best quality map was retained in our collection. Duplicate items were offered to other U.S. academic libraries. Managed the processing and evaluation of a backlog of over 200,000 aerial photographs, and identified and prepared approximately 170,000 of those items for cataloging and addition to the Map Library collection. Implemented a new staffing model for service points within the Map Library utilizing student staff in order to free full time staff for other duties, including the creation of a student training checklist. Assisted in supervising the work of the Map Library lab attendant who created a Google map mashup interface to serve up almost 60,000 digitized air photos, 7,700 of the Twin Cities metro area provided by the Map Library Minnesota Historical Air Photos Online. 7/2005 4/2007 Library Assistant, Bio-Medical Library, University Libraries, University of Minnesota Supervised Circulation Desk and coordinated training for student workers and full time staff. 3 Hired, trained, scheduled and evaluated staff of 15 student workers. Oversaw Borrowing Privileges and Fines activities. Provided assistance at the reference desk. Worked with another staff member to redesign the service desk configuration and student-staffing model to increase efficiencies and reduce the number of students needed to staff the desks. Created a training program for new student workers, including a narrated video introduction to the circulation software. Promoted from Library Assistant 2 to Library Assistant 3. The group furthers the University of Minnesota Libraries strong leadership in exploring new models for advancing a more robust, open, and technologically sophisticated ecosystem for sharing, preserving and enhancing the impact of scholarly activity Engraved in Copper: The Art of Mapping Minnesota. Prepared and mounted an exhibit in the Libraries main exhibit space; planned and hosted an exhibit event attended by over 140 people; led several structured tours of the exhibit for University and Community groups Member, Libraries Executive Committee. The purpose of the project was to develop a plan to reduce the Libraries carbon footprint, foster an ecofriendly workplace, support the University s goals and objectives in this area, help staff become better stewards of our resources, and produce a final report that may serve as a model for other campus units and other libraries Member, Procedures Documentation Framework Group. This group researched best practices in procedures documentation, developed a definition of procedures, initiated a needs analysis survey, and began developing a task matrix. Improving presentation of the procedures was the workgroup s primary focus. 6 Research in Progress Title/Description: History of GIS in Minnesota Exploration historical materials to outline the history and evolution of GIS in Minnesota, especially as it relates to the Map Library. Progress: Many boxes of historical materials have been donated to the Map Library. Years in process: 1 year Submission Plans: Eventual journal article. Additional: Time for this research will largely depend on a future Professional Development Leave. Title/Description: Archiving Geospatial Data Exploration of methods, practices, and extent to which academic institutions and/or government agencies are archiving/preserving geospatial data around the country. Focus is on at-risk, born-digital data that will be of historical significance eventually. Progress: Efforts are ongoing with a focus on BTAA states and Minnesota government-produced data. Years in process: 4 years Submission Plans: One article published (January 2016). Additional: Further research will inform the potential archiving activities of the BTAA Geospatial Data Project. Title/Description: Geoportals & Access/Discovery for Geospatial Data Exploration of methods, practices, and work flows related to issues around access and discovery for geospatial data. Progress: BTAA Geospatial Data Project began in BTAA Geoportal launched in BTAA Geospatial Data Project approved through Years in process: 7 years Submission Plans: One white paper produced (2012) and one article under review (2017).
